Jacob Meets Rachel
And Jacob continued his journey, and went into the land of the children of the east.

Підвівшись на ноги, Яків пішов до краю на схід, до Лавана, сина Ватуїла-сирійця, брата Ревеки, матері Якова й Ісава.
And he looked, and behold, there was a well in the fields, and behold there, three flocks of sheep were lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks, and a great stone was at the mouth of the well.
Він поглянув, — і ось у долині криниця, а там — три отари овець, які відпочивали біля неї, бо з тієї криниці напували стада. А на отворі криниці був великий камінь.
And when all the flocks were gathered there, they rolled the stone from the mouth of the well, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again on the mouth of the well in its place.
Збиралися там усі стада. І відкочували камінь від отвору криниці, напували овець і клали камінь на отвір криниці — на своє місце.
And Jacob said to them, My brethren, whence are ye? And they said, Of Haran are we.
Яків запитав їх: Брати, звідки ви? Вони ж промовили: Ми з Харана.
And he said to them, Do ye know Laban the son of Nahor? And they said, We do know [him].
Чи знаєте Лавана — Нахорового сина? — запитав їх. Вони ж відповіли: Знаємо.
And he said to them, Is he well? And they said, [He is] well; and behold, there comes Rachel his daughter with the sheep.
А він запитав їх: Чи здоровий? Вони ж сказали: Здоровий. Ось і Рахиль, його дочка, йде з вівцями.
And he said, Behold, it is yet high day; it is not time that the cattle should be gathered together; water the sheep, and go, feed [them].
А Яків сказав: Ще дня багато і не пора збирати худобу; дайте пити вівцям та йдіть пасти.
And they said, We cannot until all the flocks are gathered together, and they roll the stone from the mouth of the well, and we water the sheep.
Вони ж відповіли: Не можемо, доки не зберуться всі пастухи та не відкотять камінь від отвору криниці — тоді напоїмо овець.
While he was still speaking to them, Rachel came with her father's sheep, for she was a shepherdess.
Ще коли він розмовляв з ними, Рахиль, Лаванова дочка, проходила з вівцями свого батька; вона пасла овець свого батька.
And it came to pass when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, that Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the mouth of the well, and watered the sheep of Laban his mother's brother.
Сталося ж: як побачив Яків Рахиль, дочку Лавана, брата своєї матері, та овець Лавана, брата своєї матері, — тоді підійшов Яків, відкотив камінь від отвору криниці й напоїв овець Лавана, брата своєї матері.
And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice and wept.
Яків поцілував Рахиль і, голосно вигукнувши, заплакав.
And Jacob told Rachel that he was a brother of her father, and that he was Rebecca's son; and she ran and told her father.
І розповів Рахилі, що він племінник її батька — син Ревеки, а та, побігши, передала ці слова своєму батькові.
And it came to pass when Laban heard the tidings of Jacob his sister's son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house; and he told Laban all these things.
Сталося ж: як почув Лаван ім’я Якова, сина своєї сестри, вибіг йому назустріч, обнявши його, поцілував і ввів його до своєї хати. І той докладно розповів Лаванові про всі ці події.
Jacob Marries Leah and Rachel
And Laban said to him, Thou art indeed my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him a month's time.

А Лаван сказав йому: Ти є з моїх кісток і з мого тіла. І Яків перебував у нього місяць.
And Laban said to Jacob, Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou serve me for nothing? tell me, what shall be thy wages?
Сказав Лаван Якову: Хіба працюватимеш мені задарма, тому що ти мій родич? Скажи мені, скільки тобі платити.
And Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger, Rachel.
У Лавана було дві дочки: ім’я старшої — Лія, ім’я молодшої — Рахиль.
And the eyes of Leah were tender; but Rachel was of beautiful form and beautiful countenance.
Лія мала хворі очі, а Рахиль була гарна на вигляд і прекрасна обличчям.
And Jacob loved Rachel, and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter.
І Яків покохав Рахиль, тож сказав: Працюватиму в тебе сім років за Рахиль, твою молодшу дочку.
And Laban said, It is better that I give her to thee than that I should give her to another man: abide with me.
А Лаван йому сказав: Мені краще віддати її за тебе, ніж дати її за іншого чоловіка. Живи в мене.
And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they were in his eyes as single days, because he loved her.
І працював Яків за Рахиль сім років, та вони видалися йому, наче декілька днів, оскільки він її кохав.
And Jacob said to Laban, Give [me] my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in to her.
Тоді Яків сказав Лаванові: Дай мою дружину, щоб я до неї ввійшов, адже закінчилися мої дні.
And Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast.
Тож зібрав Лаван усіх чоловіків місцевості, та й зробив весілля.
And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in to her.
А коли настав вечір, Лаван, узявши свою дочку Лію, ввів її до Якова, і Яків зійшовся з нею.
And Laban gave to her Zilpah, his maidservant, to be maidservant to Leah his daughter.
Своїй дочці Лії Лаван дав рабиню Зелфу, щоби була їй за служницю.
And it came to pass in the morning, that behold, it was Leah. And he said to Laban, What is this thou hast done to me? Have I not served thee for Rachel? Why then hast thou deceived me?
Вранці ж виявилося, що то була Лія. Тож Яків сказав Лаванові: Чому ти таке мені вчинив? Хіба не за Рахиль я працював на тебе? Чому ти мене обманув?
And Laban said, It is not so done in our place, to give the younger before the firstborn.
А Лаван відповів: У нашій місцевості так не заведено, щоб віддавати молодшу раніше від старшої.
Fulfil the week [with] this one: then we will give thee the other one also, for the service that thou shalt serve me yet seven other years.
Коли ж закінчиться тиждень із нею, то віддам тобі ще й ту — за працю, яку виконуватимеш у мене ще наступних сім років.
And Jacob did so, and fulfilled the week [with] this one, and he gave him Rachel his daughter to be his wife.
Яків так і зробив. А закінчився тиждень цієї, і Лаван дав йому свою дочку Рахиль за дружину.
And Laban gave to Rachel his daughter, Bilhah, his maidservant, to be her maidservant.
Своїй дочці Рахилі Лаван дав Валу, свою рабиню, щоби була їй за служницю.
And he went in also to Rachel; and he loved also Rachel more than Leah. And he served with him yet seven other years.
І ввійшов до Рахилі, і покохав Рахиль більше, ніж Лію. І працював у нього ще наступних сім років.
Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah
And when Jehovah saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb; but Rachel was barren.

Та Господь побачив, що зненавиджена Лія, і відкрив її лоно. А Рахиль залишалася неплідною.
And Leah conceived, and bore a son, and called his name Reuben; for she said, Because Jehovah has looked upon my affliction; for now my husband will love me.
Лія завагітніла і народила Якову сина; вона дала йому ім’я — Рувим [1] , кажучи: Бо побачив Господь моє приниження; тепер мене любитиме мій чоловік!
And she again conceived, and bore a son, and said, Because Jehovah has heard that I am hated, he has therefore given me this one also; and she called his name Simeon.
І знову завагітніла Лія, і народила Якову другого сина, і сказала: Господь почув, що я зненавиджена, і дав мені й цього; вона дала йому ім’я — Симеон [2].
And she again conceived, and bore a son, and said, Now this time will my husband be united to me, for I have borne him three sons; therefore was his name called Levi.
І знову завагітніла, і народила сина, і сказала: Тепер буде мій чоловік зі мною, бо я народила йому трьох синів, тому й дано йому ім’я — Левій [3].
