  • but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell.
  • And Jehovah said to Cain, Why art thou angry, and why is thy countenance fallen?
  • The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen?
  • If thou doest well, will not [thy countenance] look up [with confidence]? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door; and unto thee [shall be] his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
  • If you do well, will you not be accepted?b And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary toc you, but you must rule over it.”

  • And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood is crying to me from the ground.
  • And the Lord said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to me from the ground.
  • And now be thou cursed from the ground, which hath opened its mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand.
  • And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.
  • When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield thee its strength; a wanderer and fugitive shalt thou be on the earth.
  • When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.”
  • And Cain said to Jehovah, My punishment is too great to be borne.
  • Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.e
  • Behold, thou hast driven me this day from the face of the ground, and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a wanderer and fugitive on the earth; and it will come to pass, [that] every one who finds me will slay me.
  • Behold, you have driven me today away from the ground, and from your face I shall be hidden. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”
  • And Jehovah said to him, Therefore, whoever slayeth Cain, it shall be revenged sevenfold. And Jehovah set a mark on Cain, lest any finding him should smite him.
  • Then the Lord said to him, “Not so! If anyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the Lord put a mark on Cain, lest any who found him should attack him.
