Joseph's Brothers Sent to Egypt

And Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, Why do ye look one upon another?

Яків, побачивши, що в Єгипті йде продаж, сказав своїм синам: Чому ви нічого не робите?

2

And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt; go down thither and buy [grain] for us from thence, in order that we may live, and not die.

2

Ось, я почув, що в Єгипті є пшениця. Сходіть туди й купіть нам трохи хліба, щоб ми вижили та не повмирали.

And Joseph's ten brethren went down to buy [grain] out of Egypt.

3

І десять Йосифових братів пішли купити в Єгипті пшениці.

4

But Benjamin, Joseph's brother, Jacob sent not with his brethren; for he said, Lest mischief may befall him.

4

Та Веніамина, Йосифового брата, не відпустив з його братами, бо сказав: Щоби часом не скоїлося з ним нещастя.

So the sons of Israel came to buy [grain] among those that came; for the famine was in the land of Canaan.

Тож сини Ізраїля прийшли разом з іншими, які прибули для закупівлі, оскільки в Ханаанській землі був голод.

And Joseph, he was the governor over the land -- he it was that sold [the corn] to all the people of the land. And Joseph's brethren came and bowed down to him, the face to the earth.

А Йосиф був володарем краю; він продавав усьому народові землі. Прийшовши, Йосифові брати вклонилися йому обличчям до землі.

And Joseph saw his brethren, and knew them; but he made himself strange to them, and spoke roughly to them, and said to them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan, to buy food.

Йосиф, побачивши своїх братів, упізнав їх, та тримався на віддалі від них і говорив з ними суворо. Він запитав їх: Звідкіля ви прийшли? Вони ж сказали: З Ханаанської землі, щоб купити їжі.

And Joseph knew his brethren, but they did not know him.

8

Тож Йосиф упізнав своїх братів, а вони його не впізнали.

9

And Joseph remembered the dreams that he had dreamt of them; and he said to them, Ye are spies: to see the exposed places of the land ye are come.

9

І пригадав Йосиф сни, які він бачив, і сказав їм: Ви — шпигуни, ви прийшли розвідати дороги краю.

10

And they said to him, No, my lord; but to buy food are thy servants come.

10

Вони ж відповіли: Ні, пане, ми, твої раби, прийшли купити хліба.

11

We are all one man's sons; we are honest: thy servants are not spies.

11

Усі ми — сини одного чоловіка; ми мирні! Твої раби — не шпигуни!

12

And he said to them, No; but to see the exposed places of the land are ye come.

12

Та він сказав їм: Ні, ви таки прийшли, щоб вивідати дороги краю.

13

And they said, Thy servants were twelve brethren, sons of one man, in the land of Canaan; and behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.

13

Вони ж сказали: Ми — твої раби, нас дванадцятеро братів у Ханаанській землі; і ось молодший сьогодні з нашим батьком, а ще одного немає.

14

And Joseph said to them, That is it that I have spoken to you, saying, Ye are spies.

14

Промовив до них Йосиф: Як я вам сказав — так воно і є; стверджую, що ви — шпигуни!

15

By this ye shall be put to the proof: as Pharaoh lives, ye shall not go forth hence, unless your youngest brother come hither!

15

Цим ви і виявитеся! Клянусь здоров’ям фараона: не вийдете ви звідси, доки ваш молодший брат не прибуде сюди!

16

Send one of you, that he may fetch your brother, but ye shall be imprisoned, and your words shall be put to the proof, whether the truth is in you; and if not, as Pharaoh lives, ye are spies.

16

Пошліть одного з-поміж вас і приведіть вашого брата; ви ж — чекайте, доки не будуть доведені ваші слова, — кажете правду чи ні. Якщо ні, то клянусь здоров’ям фараона, що ви — шпигуни.

And he put them in custody three days.

17

І вкинув їх до в’язниці на три дні.

18

And Joseph said to them the third day, This do, that ye may live: I fear God.

18

А третього дня їм сказав: Зробіть так — і житимете, адже я боюся Бога.

19

If ye are honest, let one of your brethren remain bound in the house of your prison, but go ye, carry grain for the hunger of your households;

19

Якщо ви мирні, нехай один з ваших братів залишиться у в’язниці, ви ж ідіть і віднесіть куплену вами пшеницю,

20

and bring your youngest brother to me, in order that your words be verified, and that ye may not die. And they did so.

20

а вашого молодшого брата приведіть до мене, і ваші слова підтвердяться. Якщо ж ні — помрете. Вони так і зробили.

21

Then they said one to another, We are indeed guilty concerning our brother, whose anguish of soul we saw when he besought us, and we did not hearken; therefore this distress is come upon us.

21

І говорили брати між собою: Так, дійсно, ми грішні щодо нашого брата, бо знехтували ми біль його душі, коли благав нас, і не вислухали ми його. Ось чому прийшло на нас це нещастя.

22

And Reuben answered them, saying, Did I not speak to you, saying, Do not sin against the lad? But ye did not hearken; and now behold, his blood also is required.

А Рувим у відповідь промовив до них: Чи не говорив я вам, твердячи: Не чиніть зла юнакові. Та ви не послухали мене. І ось — домагаються від нас його крові.

23

And they did not know that Joseph understood, for the interpreter was between them.

23

Вони ж не знали, що Йосиф їх розуміє, оскільки між ними був перекладач.

24

And he turned away from them, and wept. And he returned to them, and spoke to them, and took Simeon from among them, and bound him before their eyes.

24

Тож відвернувшись від них, Йосиф заплакав. Тоді знову повернувся до них і заговорив з ними. Він забрав від них Симеона і зв’язав його перед ними.

25

Joseph's Brothers Return to Canaan

And Joseph gave orders to fill their vessels with corn, and to restore every man's money into his sack, and to give them provision for the way. And thus did they to them.

25

А їхні торби Йосиф наказав наповнити пшеницею, повернути гроші кожного в його мішок і дати їм харчів на дорогу. Так з ними і було зроблено.

And they loaded their asses with their grain, and departed thence.

26

І навантаживши пшеницю на своїх ослів, вони пішли звідти.

27

And one of them opened his sack to give his ass food in the inn, and saw his money, and behold, it was in the mouth of his sack.

27

А там, де зупинилися, один із них розв’язав свій мішок, щоб нагодувати ослів, побачив вузлик зі своїми грішми, який був зверху в мішку.

28

And he said to his brethren, My money is returned [to me], and behold, it is even in my sack. And their heart failed [them], and they were afraid, saying one to another, What is this [that] God has done to us?

І він сказав своїм братам: Мені повернули гроші — ось вони в моєму мішку! І жах охопив їхнє серце, вони налякалися і говорили один одному: Що це Бог нам зробив?

29

And they came into the land of Canaan, to Jacob their father, and told him all that had befallen them, saying,

29

І прибули вони в Ханаанську землю до свого батька Якова, і розповіли йому все, що з ними трапилося, кажучи:

30

The man, the lord of the land, spoke roughly to us, and treated us as spies of the land.

30

Говорив з нами суворо той чоловік, володар краю, і кинув нас у в’язницю як шпигунів країни.

31

And we said to him, We are honest; we are not spies:

31

Ми ж йому сказали: Ми — мирні, ми не шпигуни;

32

we are twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.

32

нас є дванадцять братів — синів нашого батька; одного немає, а найменший сьогодні з нашим батьком у Ханаанській землі.

33

And the man, the lord of the land, said to us, Hereby shall I know that ye are honest: leave one of your brethren with me, and take [for] the hunger of your households, and go,

33

А чоловік, володар краю, сказав нам: Ось із чого довідаюся, що ви мирні: одного брата залиште тут зі мною, візьміть куплену пшеницю і повертайтеся до вашого дому.

34

and bring your youngest brother to me, and I shall know that ye are not spies, but are honest. Your brother will I give up to you; and ye may trade in the land.

34

Тож приведіть вашого молодшого брата до мене, — і тоді знатиму, що ви не шпигуни, а мирні, і віддам вам вашого брата, і будете торгувати в краю.

35

And it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that behold, every man had his bundle of money in his sack; and they saw their bundles of money, they and their father, and were afraid.

А коли вони випорожнювали свої мішки, то виявилося, що в мішку кожного був вузол з грішми. Вони та їхній батько побачили вузлики зі своїми грішми — і перелякалися.

36

And Jacob their father said to them, Ye have bereaved me of children: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin! All these things are against me.

36

І сказав їм Яків, їхній батько: Ви позбавили мене дітей. Йосифа немає, Симеона немає, а тепер забираєте Веніамина! Усе це впало на мене.

37

And Reuben spoke to his father, saying, Slay my two sons if I bring him not back to thee: give him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee again.

37

Та Рувим сказав своєму батькові, промовляючи: Убий моїх двох синів, якщо не приведу його до тебе! Віддай його в мої руки, — і я поверну його тобі.

38

But he said, My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead, and he alone is left; and if mischief should befall him by the way in which ye go, then would ye bring down my grey hairs with sorrow to Sheol.

Він же відповів: Мій син не піде з вами, бо його брат помер, і він залишився сам-один. А як спіткає його лихо в дорозі, якою підете, то смутком зведете мою старість до аду.
