  • Mourning and Burial for Jacob

And Joseph fell upon his father's face, and wept upon him, and kissed him.
  • Then Joseph fell on his father’s face and wept over him and kissed him.
  • And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. And the physicians embalmed Israel.
  • And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel.
  • And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those who are embalmed. And the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days.
  • Forty days were required for it, for that is how many are required for embalming. And the Egyptians wept for him seventy days.
  • And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spoke to the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found favour in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,
  • And when the days of weeping for him were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, please speak in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,
  • My father made me swear, saying, Behold, I die; in my grave which I have dug myself in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. And now, let me go up, I pray thee, that I may bury my father; and I will come again.
  • ‘My father made me swear, saying, “I am about to die: in my tomb that I hewed out for myself in the land of Canaan, there shall you bury me.” Now therefore, let me please go up and bury my father. Then I will return.’”
  • And Pharaoh said, Go up and bury thy father, according as he made thee swear.
  • And Pharaoh answered, “Go up, and bury your father, as he made you swear.”
  • And Joseph went up to bury his father; and with him went up all the bondmen of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,
  • So Joseph went up to bury his father. With him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,
  • and all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and his father's house; only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen.
  • as well as all the household of Joseph, his brothers, and his father’s household. Only their children, their flocks, and their herds were left in the land of Goshen.
  • And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen; and the camp was very great.
  • And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen. It was a very great company.
  • And they came to the threshing-floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan; and there they lamented with a great and very grievous lamentation; and he made a mourning for his father of seven days.
  • When they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, they lamented there with a very great and grievous lamentation, and he made a mourning for his father seven days.
  • And the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at the threshing-floor of Atad, and they said, This is a grievous mourning of the Egyptians. Therefore the name of it was called Abel-Mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.
  • When the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning on the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a grievous mourning by the Egyptians.” Therefore the place was named Abel-mizraim;a it is beyond the Jordan.
  • And his sons did to him according as he had commanded them;
  • Thus his sons did for him as he had commanded them,
  • and his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah which Abraham had bought along with the field, for a possession of a sepulchre, of Ephron the Hittite, opposite to Mamre.
  • for his sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field at Machpelah, to the east of Mamre, which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite to possess as a burying place.
  • And, after he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brethren, and all that had gone up with him to bury his father.
  • After he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt with his brothers and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.
  • Joseph Comforts his Brothers

And when Joseph's brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, If now Joseph should be hostile to us, and should indeed requite us all the evil that we did to him!
  • God’s Good Purposes

When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “It may be that Joseph will hate us and pay us back for all the evil that we did to him.”
  • And they sent a messenger to Joseph, saying, Thy father commanded before he died, saying,
  • So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, “Your father gave this command before he died:
  • Thus shall ye speak to Joseph: Oh forgive, I pray thee, the transgression of thy brethren, and their sin! for they did evil to thee. And now, we pray thee, forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spoke to him.
  • ‘Say to Joseph, “Please forgive the transgression of your brothers and their sin, because they did evil to you.”’ And now, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.” Joseph wept when they spoke to him.
  • And his brethren also went and fell down before his face, and said, Behold, we are thy bondmen.
  • His brothers also came and fell down before him and said, “Behold, we are your servants.”
  • And Joseph said to them, Fear not: am I then in the place of God?
  • But Joseph said to them, “Do not fear, for am I in the place of God?
  • Ye indeed meant evil against me: God meant it for good, in order that he might do as [it is] this day, to save a great people alive.
  • As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many peopleb should be kept alive, as they are today.
  • And now, fear not: I will maintain you and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spoke consolingly to them.
  • So do not fear; I will provide for you and your little ones.” Thus he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.
  • The Death of Joseph

And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he and his father's house; and Joseph lived a hundred and ten years.
  • The Death of Joseph

So Joseph remained in Egypt, he and his father’s house. Joseph lived 110 years.
  • And Joseph saw Ephraim's children of the third [generation]; the sons also of Machir the son of Manasseh were born on Joseph's knees.
  • And Joseph saw Ephraim’s children of the third generation. The children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were counted as Joseph’s own.c
  • And Joseph said to his brethren, I die; and God will certainly visit you, and bring you up out of this land, into the land that he swore unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.
  • And Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die, but God will visit you and bring you up out of this land to the land that he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.”
  • And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will certainly visit you; and ye shall carry up my bones hence.
  • Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here.”
  • And Joseph died, a hundred and ten years old; and they embalmed him; and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.
  • So Joseph died, being 110 years old. They embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.
