Then David said to the messenger, Thus shalt thou say to Joab: Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devours one as well as another: make thy battle strong against the city, and overthrow it; -- and encourage him.

Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another: make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and encourage thou him.

David told the messenger, “Say this to Joab: ‘Don’t let this upset you; the sword devours one as well as another. Press the attack against the city and destroy it.’ Say this to encourage Joab.” -

“Well, tell Joab not to be discouraged,” David said. “The sword devours this one today and that one tomorrow! Fight harder next time, and conquer the city!”

Тогда сказал Давид посланному: так скажи Иоаву: «пусть не смущает тебя это дело, ибо меч поядает иногда того, иногда сего; усиль войну твою против города и разрушь его». Так ободри его.

Тоді Давид сказав посланцеві: “Скажеш Йоавові: Не журись тим, бо меч пожирає то тут, то там. Посиль свій наступ на місто й зруйнуй його. Так ти підбадьориш його.”

І каже Давид посланцеві: Скажи так Йоабові: Не журись, бо меч пожерає то сього то того; бий сьміливо на город і зруйнуй його, та так підійми йому духа. -
І сказав Давид до посла́: „Так скажеш до Йоава: Нехай не буде злою в оча́х твоїх ця річ, бо меч пожирає то цьо́го, то то́го. Підсиль війну свою проти міста, та й розвали його! І підбадьо́р його, Йоава!“

Давид сказал вестнику:
— Скажи Иоаву так: «Пусть это тебя не огорчает; меч поражает то одного, то другого. Соберись с силами против города и разрушь его». Скажи так, чтобы ободрить Иоава. -
Тоді Давид промовив до посланця: Так скажеш Йоавові: Хай не буде злим це слово у твоїх очах, бо часом так, а іноді інакше пожирає меч. Посиль твою війну проти міста, знищ його! — цими словами підкріпи його!
