Absalom's Conspiracy

And it came to pass after this, that Absalom prepared for himself chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him.

І сталося після цього, що Авесалом придбав собі колісниці та коней і п’ятдесят мужів, щоби бігли перед ним.

2

And Absalom rose early, and stood beside the way of the gate; and it was so, that when any man who had a controversy had to come to the king for judgment, then Absalom called him, and said, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel.

Авесалом уставав вранці й ставав на узбіччі дороги брами, і було, що кожний чоловік, в якого була судова справа, і він приходив до царя на суд, то його окликав Авесалом, кажучи йому: З якого ти міста? І відказував чоловік: Твій раб з одного з племен Ізраїля.

And Absalom said to him, See, thy matters are good and right; but there is no man to hear thee [appointed] by the king.

А Авесалом йому говорив: Ось слова твої добрі та зрозумілі, та біля царя немає того, хто вислухає тебе.

4

And Absalom said, Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man who has any controversy and cause might come to me, and I would do him justice!

І говорив Авесалом: Хто мене настановить суддею на землі! До мене приходитиме кожний чоловік, в якого буде незгода і судова справа, і розсуджу його?

And it was so, that when any man came near to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took him, and kissed him.

І було, коли наближався чоловік, щоб йому поклонитися, і простягав свою руку, то він обіймав його і цілував його.

And in this manner did Absalom to all Israel that came to the king for judgment; and Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.

І чинив Авесалом за цим словом усьому Ізраїлеві, кожному, хто приходив на суд до царя. І Авесалом привертав серце ізраїльських мужів.

And it came to pass at the end of forty years, that Absalom said to the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay in Hebron my vow which I have vowed to Jehovah.

І було по закінченні сорока років, Авесалом сказав своєму батькові: Піду і виконаю мої обітниці, які я дав Господу в Хевроні.

8

For thy servant vowed a vow while I abode in Geshur in Syria, saying, If Jehovah shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve Jehovah.

Адже обітниці склав твій раб, коли я жив у Ґедсурі, у Сирії, кажучи: Якщо Господь справді поверне [1] мене в Єрусалим, то служитиму Господу.

And the king said to him, Go in peace. And he rose up and went to Hebron.

І цар сказав йому: Іди в мирі. І, вставши, він пішов до Хеврону.

10

And Absalom sent emissaries into all the tribes of Israel, saying, When ye hear the sound of the trumpet, ye shall say, Absalom reigns in Hebron.

Авесалом послав розвідників до всіх племен Ізраїля, кажучи: Коли ви почуєте голос рога, то скажете: Цар Авесалом зацарював у Хевроні!

And with Absalom went two hundred men out of Jerusalem, that were invited; and they went in their simplicity, and they knew nothing.

І з Авесаломом пішло двісті славних мужів з Єрусалима, ішли у своїй простоті й не знали нічого про справу.

And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David's counsellor, from his city, from Giloh, while he offered the sacrifices. And the conspiracy gathered strength; and the people increased continually with Absalom.

І послав Авесалом, і покликав Ахітофела, ґелмонейця, радника Давида з його міста з Ґоли, коли він приносив жертву. І була велика змова, і народ підходив, і багато стало на бік Авесалома.

David Flees Jerusalem

And there came one to David who reported saying, The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom.

13

І прийшов вісник до Давида, кажучи: Серце ізраїльських мужів пішло за Авесаломом.

14

And David said to all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Rise up and let us flee; for we shall not [else] escape from Absalom. Be quick to depart, lest he overtake us quickly, and bring evil upon us, and smite the city with the edge of the sword.

І сказав Давид усім своїм слугам, які були з ним у Єрусалимі: Встаньте, і втікаймо, бо немає нам спасіння від обличчя Авесалома! Не баріться піти, щоб він не поспішив і не захопив нас, не наніс нам зла і не побив міста вістрям меча!

15

And the king's servants said to the king, Behold, thy servants [will do] whatever my lord the king shall choose.

15

А слуги царя сказали цареві: За всім, що вибирає наш володар-цар, ось твої раби.

16

And the king went forth, and all his household after him, and the king left ten women, concubines, to keep the house.

16

І вийшов цар, і весь його дім своїми ногами. І цар залишив десять своїх жінок-наложниць, щоб стерегли дім.

17

And the king went forth, and all the people after him, and stayed at the remote house.

17

І вийшов цар, і всі його раби пішки і зупинилися у віддаленому домі.

18

And all his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men that came after him from Gath, passed over before the king.

18

І всі його слуги йшли поряд з ним, і кожний хет, і кожний фелеттієць. Вони зупинилися біля оливкових дерев у пустелі. І весь народ ішов близько від нього, і всі, хто довкола нього, і всі мужі, і всі військові, шістсот мужів, були поряд нього. And the king said to Ittai the Gittite, Why dost thou also go with us? return to thy place, and abide with the king; for thou art a foreigner, and besides, thou hast emigrated to the place where thou [dwellest].

І сказав цар Еттієві, ґеттейцю: Навіщо і ти йдеш з нами, повернися і живи із царем, адже ти є чужинцем, і ти переселився зі свого місця.

20

Thou didst come yesterday, and should I this day make thee go up and down with us, seeing I go whither I can? Return and take back thy brethren. Mercy and truth be with thee!

Учора ти прийшов, і сьогодні зрушу тебе з нами, і знову мінятимеш твоє місце? Учора ти вийшов, і сьогодні зрушу тебе з нами, щоб іти? А я піду, куди лиш піду. Повернися і поверни своїх братів з тобою, і Господь учинить з тобою милосердя і правду.

And Ittai answered the king and said, [As] Jehovah liveth, and [as] my lord the king liveth, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will thy servant be.

Та Еттій відповів цареві, запевняючи: Нехай живе Господь, і нехай живе мій володар-цар, у місці, де тільки буде мій володар, — і хоч би на смерть, і хоч би на життя, — то там буде твій раб!

22

And David said to Ittai, Go and pass over. And Ittai the Gittite passed over, and all his men, and all the little ones that were with him.

22

І сказав цар Еттієві: Давай, іди зі мною! І пішов Еттій, ґеттеєць, усі його слуги і весь народ, що був з ним.

23

And all the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed over; the king also himself passed over the torrent Kidron, and all the people passed over, towards the way of the wilderness.

І вся земля плакала могутнім голосом. А весь народ переходив потік Кедрон, і цар перейшов потік Кедрон. Весь народ і цар ішли по поверхні пустельної дороги.

24

And behold, Zadok also, and all the Levites with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God; and they set down the ark of God; and Abiathar went up, until all the people had passed completely out of the city.

І ось і Садок, і з ним — усі левіти, несучи ковчег Господнього завіту з Ветара, і зупинили Божий ковчег, і Авіятар піднявся, аж доки весь народ не закінчив виходити з міста.

25

And the king said to Zadok, Carry back the ark of God into the city. If I shall find favour in the eyes of Jehovah, he will bring me again, and shew me it, and its habitation.

25

Та цар сказав Садокові: Поверни Божий ковчег в місто. Якщо знайду милість в Господніх очах, Він і поверне мене, і покаже мені його та його красу.

26

But if he thus say, I have no delight in thee; behold, [here am] I, let him do to me as seemeth good to him.

26

А якщо Він так сказав: Не забажав Я тебе! Ось я, нехай учинить мені за тим, що добре в Його очах.

27

And the king said to Zadok the priest, Thou art the seer: return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz thy son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar.

27

І сказав цар священикові Садокові: Поглянь, ти повертаєшся до міста в мирі, і Ахімаас, твій син, і Йонатан, син Авіятара, два ваші сини з вами.

28

See, I will stop in the plains of the desert, until there come word from you to inform me.

28

Глядіть, я є зі зброєю в пустелі Аравот, аж доки не прийде від вас слово, щоб мене попередити.

29

And Zadok and Abiathar carried the ark of God again to Jerusalem; and they abode there.

29

І повернув Садок і Авіятар ковчег до Єрусалима, і перебував там.

David Weeps at Mount Olivet

But David went up by the ascent of the Olives, and wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and he went barefoot; and all the people that was with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up.

30

А Давид ішов вгору до оливкових дерев та все плакав [2] , і був з покритою головою, і він ішов босий, і весь народ, який з ним, кожний покрив свою голову і йшов вгору та все плакав [3].

31

And one told David saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. Then said David, Jehovah, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.

І сповістили Давидові, переказуючи: Ахітофел між змовниками з Авесаломом! А Давид сказав: Господи, Боже мій, зруйнуй раду Ахітофела!

32

And it came to pass, when David had come to the summit, where he worshipped God, that behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent, and earth upon his head.

Давид ішов аж до Рооса, де там поклонився Богові, і ось йому назустріч вийшов Хусій, архієць, друг Давида, з роздертим своїм одягом, і земля на його голові.

33

And David said to him, If thou passest on with me, thou wilt be a burden to me;

33

І сказав йому Давид: Якщо підеш зі мною, то будеш для мене тягарем.

34

but if thou return to the city, and say to Absalom, I will be thy servant, O king; as I have been thy father's servant hitherto, so now will I be thy servant; then mayest thou for me defeat the counsel of Ahithophel.

Якщо ж повернешся в місто і скажеш Авесаломові: Перейшли твої брати, і цар, твій батько, перейшов за мною, і тепер я — твій слуга, царю, залиши мене живим! Я був слугою твого батька тоді, дотепер, а тепер я — твій раб. І зруйнуєш мені раду Ахітофела.

And hast thou not there with thee Zadok and Abiathar the priests? and it shall be, [that] whatsoever thing thou shalt hear out of the king's house, thou shalt tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests.

35

Ось там з тобою священики Садок і Авіятар, і буде, що кожне слово, яке почуєш з дому царя, то сповістиш священикам — Садокові та Авіятарові.

36

Behold, they have there with them their two sons, Ahimaaz Zadok's [son], and Jonathan Abiathar's son; and by them ye shall send to me everything that ye shall hear.

36

Ось там з ними — два їхніх сини: Ахімаас, син Садока, і Йонатан, син Авіятара, і через них пошлете до мене кожне слово, яке тільки почуєте.

37

And Hushai David's friend came into the city, and Absalom came into Jerusalem.

37

І Хусій, друг Давида, увійшов у місто, а тоді в Єрусалим почав заходити Авесалом.
