The Axe Head Floats

And the sons of the prophets said to Elisha, Behold now, the place where we dwell before thee is too strait for us.

1

Якось сини пророків звернулися до Елісея: Ось місце, в якому ми живемо перед тобою, воно — тісне для нас.

2

Let us go, we pray thee, to the Jordan, and take thence every man a beam, and let us make us a place there, where we may dwell. And he said, Go.

2

Тож підемо до Йордану, і кожний муж візьме звідти одну колоду, і зробимо собі там житло. А він сказав: Ідіть!

3

And one said, Consent, I pray thee, to go with thy servants. And he said, I will go.

Та один лагідно промовив: Іди з твоїми рабами! І він сказав: Я піду!

And he went with them. And they came to the Jordan and cut down the trees.

4

Тож він пішов з ними, і вони прийшли до Йордану, і почали рубати ліс.

5

And it came to pass as one was felling a beam, that the iron fell into the water; and he cried and said, Alas, master, and it was borrowed!

І ось один рубав колоду, і впало залізко сокири у воду. І він закричав: О, володарю, та ж воно позичене!

And the man of God said, Where did it fall? And he shewed him the place. And he cut down a stick, and cast it in thither, and made the iron to swim.

А Божий чоловік запитав: Де впало? І той показав йому місце. А він відломив кусок дерева і кинув туди, і залізко виплило.

7

And he said, Take [it] up to thee. And he put out his hand and took it.

Візьми собі, — сказав він. І той простягнув свою руку і взяв його.

Elisha Captures Blinded Syrians

And the king of Syria warred against Israel; and he took counsel with his servants, saying, In such and such a place [shall be] my camp.

8

Цар Сирії воював проти Ізраїля. Він радився зі своїми слугами, пропонуючи: На такому-то місці отаборюся.

9

And the man of God sent to the king of Israel, saying, Beware that thou pass not such a place, for thither the Syrians are come down.

9

А Елісей послав до царя Ізраїля, остерігаючи: Стережись, не йди в це місце, бо там Сирія притаїлася!

10

And the king of Israel sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him of, and he was on his guard there. [That took place] not once, nor twice.

10

І послав цар Ізраїля в те місце, про яке йому сказав Елісей, і стерігся того місця не раз і не два.

11

And the heart of the king of Syria was troubled because of this thing; and he called his servants, and said to them, Will ye not shew me which of us is for the king of Israel?

11

І заворушилася душа царя Сирії через цю справу, і він закликав своїх слуг, і сказав їм: Не сповіщаєте мені, хто видає мене цареві Ізраїля?

12

And one of his servants said, None, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bedchamber.

І сказав один із його слуг: Ні, мій володарю, царю, бо це пророк Елісей, який в Ізраїлі, сповіщає цареві Ізраїля всі слова, які ти говориш у кімнаті своєї спальні!

13

And he said, Go and see where he is, and I will send and fetch him. And it was told him saying, Behold, he is in Dothan.

13

І той сказав: Ідіть, подивіться, де він, і, пославши, візьму його! І сповістили йому, кажучи: Ось у Дотаїмі!

14

And he sent thither horses and chariots, and a great host, and they came by night and surrounded the city.

14

І він послав туди кінноту, колісниці та велике військо, і вони прийшли вночі й оточили місто.

15

And when the attendant of the man of God rose early and went forth, behold, an army surrounded the city, with horses and chariots. And his servant said to him, Alas, my master! how shall we do?

15

І збудився вранці слуга Елісея, щоб устати, і вийшов, аж ось військо, кіннота і колісниці оточили місто, і слуга сказав йому: О, володарю, що робитимемо?

16

And he said, Fear not, for they that are with us are more than they that are with them.

16

А Елісей відповів: Не бійся, бо тих, хто з нами, більше від тих, хто з ними!

17

And Elisha prayed and said, Jehovah, I pray thee, open his eyes that he may see. And Jehovah opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw; and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

17

І помолився Елісей, і сказав: Господи, відкрий очі слуги, і нехай побачить! І Господь відкрив його очі, і він побачив, як ось гора, повна коней, і вогненні колісниці довкола Елісея.

18

And they came down to him; and Elisha prayed to Jehovah and said, Smite this nation, I pray thee, with blindness. And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.

18

І вони підійшли до нього, а Елісей помолився до Господа і сказав: Урази цей народ сліпотою! І Він уразив їх сліпотою за словом Елісея.

19

And Elisha said to them, This is not the way, neither is this the city: follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom ye seek. And he led them to Samaria.

19

І сказав їм Елісей: Не це місто і не ця дорога! Ідіть за мною, і я відведу вас до чоловіка, якого шукаєте! І він привів їх у Самарію.

20

And it came to pass when they entered into Samaria, that Elisha said, Jehovah, open the eyes of these [men] that they may see. And Jehovah opened their eyes, and they saw, and behold, they were in the midst of Samaria.

20

І сталося, коли вони прийшли в Самарію, то Елісей сказав: Відкрий, Господи, їхні очі й хай побачать! І Господь відкрив їхні очі, і вони побачили, — аж ось вони були посеред Самарії.

21

And the king of Israel said to Elisha, when he saw them, My father, shall I smite? shall I smite [them]?

А цар Ізраїля, коли їх побачив, запитав: Чи не побити мені [1]їх, батьку?

22

And he said, Thou shalt not smite [them]: wouldest thou smite those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master.

22

І той відповів: Не вбивай! Убивати можна тільки тих, яких ти взяв у полон своїм мечем і своїм луком! Поклади перед ними хліб і воду, і хай їдять, хай п’ють і хай ідуть до свого володаря!

23

And he prepared a great repast for them, and they ate and drank; and he sent them away, and they went to their master. And the bands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel.

23

І він поставив перед ними великий стіл, вони поїли і попили, і він відіслав їх, і вони пішли до свого володаря. І не продовжували більше легко озброєні сирійці виступати проти землі Ізраїлю.

24

The Siege and Famine of Samaria

And it came to pass after this that Ben-Hadad king of Syria gathered all his army, and went up and besieged Samaria.

24

І сталося після цього, що зібрав син Адера, цар Сирії, весь свій табір, пішов і взяв у облогу Самарію.

25

And there was a great famine in Samaria; and behold, they besieged it, until an ass's head was worth eighty silver-pieces, and the fourth part of a cab of dove's dung five silver-pieces.

І в Самарії настав великий голод, і ось вона перебувала в облозі, аж доки не була голова осла за п’ятдесят сиклів срібла, а четвертина міри голубиного гною — за п’ять сиклів срібла.

And it came to pass as the king of Israel was passing by upon the wall, there cried a woman to him saying, Help, my lord O king!

26

Цар Ізраїля ходив по мурах, а до нього закричала жінка, гукаючи: Спаси, володарю-царю!

27

And he said, If Jehovah do not help thee, whence should I help thee? Out of the threshing-floor, or out of the winepress?

А той відповів їй: Якщо тебе не спасе Господь, як я тебе спасу? Чи з току, чи із чавила?

28

And the king said to her, What aileth thee? And she said, This woman said to me, Give thy son, that we may eat him to-day, and we will eat my son to-morrow.

28

А далі цар запитав її: Що тобі є? А вона промовила: Ця жінка сказала мені: Дай твого сина, сьогодні ми його з’їмо, завтра ж — мого сина, з’їмо і його!

29

And we boiled my son, and ate him: and I said to her on the next day, Give thy son, that we may eat him; and she has hidden her son.

І ми зварили мого сина, і з’їли його. А на наступний день я сказала їй: Дай твого сина, з’їмо і його! Але вона заховала свого сина!

30

And it came to pass when the king heard the words of the woman, that he rent his garments; and he was passing by upon the wall, and the people looked, and behold, he had sackcloth within upon his flesh.

30

І сталося, коли цар Ізраїля почув слова жінки, то роздер свій одяг, і він ходив по мурах, і народ побачив на його тілі під низом мішковину.

31

And he said, God do so, and more also to me, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat shall remain on him this day!

31

І він сказав: Так нехай зробить мені Бог і так нехай додасть, якщо голова Елісея буде на ньому сьогодні.

32

And Elisha sat in his house, and the elders sat with him. And [the king] sent a man before him. Before the messenger came to him, he himself said to the elders, Do ye see how this son of a murderer has sent to take away my head? See, when the messenger comes; shut the door, and keep him off with the door: is not the sound of his master's feet behind him?

А Елісей перебував у своєму домі, і старійшини перебували з ним. І послав чоловіка перед ним раніше, ніж до нього прийшов посланець, і він сказав старійшинам: Чи знаєте, що цей приречений на смерть послав, щоб зняти мою голову? Глядіть, як тільки прийде посланець, закрийте двері й затримайте його при дверях. Хіба не звук ніг його володаря за ним?

And while he yet talked with them, behold, the messenger came down to him. And [the king] said, Behold, this evil is of Jehovah: why should I wait for Jehovah any longer?

Коли він ще говорив з ними, аж ось зайшов до нього посланець. І він сказав: Ось це зло від Господа! Чому терпітиму ще Господу?
