Saul's Overthrow and Death

And the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain on mount Gilboa.

Филистії воювались з Ізраїльом, і втїкали Ізрайлитяне перед Филистіями, й падали побиті на горі Гебуї.

And the Philistines followed hard after Saul and after his sons; and the Philistines smote Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchi-shua, Saul's sons.

І погнались Филистії за Саулом та синами його, й вбили Филистії Йонатана й Абинадаба та Мелхисуя, Саулових синів.

And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers came up with him, and he was terrified by the archers.

Битва проти Сяула збілшалась, і стріли влучали в його, так що він був поранений стрілами.

Then said Saul to his armour-bearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through with it; lest these uncircumcised come and abuse me. But his armour-bearer would not; for he was much afraid. So Saul took the sword and fell on it.

І сказав Саул до свого зброєноші: Витягни свого меча й заколи мене ним, щоб не прийшли оті необрізані та не знущались з мене. Але зброєноша не згодивсь, бо він дуже злякавсь. Тодї Саул взяв меча й настромився на його.

And when his armour-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise on the sword, and died.

Його зброєноша, побачивши, що Саул помер, настромився й сам на меч і вмер.

So Saul died, and his three sons, and all his house died together.

6

І помер Саул, і три сини його, й ввесь дім його вимер разом із ним.

The Philistines Possess the Towns

And when all the men of Israel that were in the valley saw that they fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook their cities and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.

Як же вглядїли Ізрайлитяне, котрі були в долинї, що всї втїкають і що Саул та сини його погибли, то й покинули свої міста й порозбігались, а Филистії прийшли й поселились в їх.

And it came to pass the next day, that the Philistines came to strip the slain, and they found Saul and his sons fallen on mount Gilboa.

Другого дня прийшли Филистії обдирати побитих, і знайшли Саула та синів його, що полягли на Гелбуйській горі,

And they stripped him, and took his head, and his armour, and sent [them] into the land of the Philistines round about, to announce the glad tidings to their idols, and to the people.

І роздягли його, й стяли йому голову його та й (забрали) зброю його, і послали по краю Филистійському, щоб сповістити про це ідолів своїх і народ.

10

And they put his armour in the house of their god, and fastened his head in the house of Dagon.

10

І зложили зброю його в божницї своїх богів, а голову його настромили при домі Дагоновому.

Jabesh-Gilead's Tribute to Saul

And when all they of Jabesh-Gilead heard of all that the Philistines had done to Saul,

І перечув ввесь Явис Галаадський про усе, що вдїяли Филистії з Саулом.

12

all the valiant men arose, and took up the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the terebinth of Jabesh, and fasted seven days.

І рушили всї дужі люде, взяли Саулове тїло й тїла синів його, та й принесли їх у Явис, і поховали їх костї під дубом в Явисї, й постили сїм день.

13

And Saul died for his unfaithfulness which he committed against Jehovah, because of the word of Jehovah which he kept not, and also for having inquired of the spirit of Python, asking counsel of it;

Так помер Саул за свою беззаконність, що вчинив перед Господом, за те, що не послухав слова Господнього та ще й вдався до чарівницї з запитаннєм,

14

and he asked not counsel of Jehovah; therefore he slew him, and transferred the kingdom to David the son of Jesse.

14

А не шукав Господа. За те він і погубив його, а царство віддав Давидові Ессеєнкові.
