Rebellion against Rehoboam

And Rehoboam went to Shechem; for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.

І пішов Рехав'ам до Сихе́му, бо до Сихему зійшовся ввесь Ізраїль, щоб настанови́ти його царем.

And it came to pass when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard it (now he was in Egypt, whither he had fled from the presence of king Solomon) that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.

І сталося, як почув це Єровоа́м, Неватів син, — він був в Єгипті, куди втік від царя Соломона, — то вернувся Єровоам з Єгипту.

And they sent and called him; and Jeroboam and all Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam saying,

І послали й покликали його. І прийшов Єровоам та ввесь Ізра́їль, і вони говорили до Рехав'ама, кажучи:

Thy father made our yoke grievous; and now lighten the grievous servitude of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee.

„Твій батько вчинив був тяжки́м наше ярмо́, а ти полегши́ жорсто́ку роботу батька свого та тяжке́ його ярмо, що наклав він був на нас, і ми бу́демо служити тобі“.

And he said to them, Come again to me after three days. And the people departed.

5

А він відказав їм: „Ідіть ще на три дні, і верніться до ме́не“. І пішов той наро́д.

6

And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, How do ye advise to return answer to this people?

6

І радився цар Рехав'а́м зо старши́ми, що стояли перед обличчям його батька Соломона, коли він був живий, говорячи: „Як ви радите відповісти́ цьому́ наро́дові?“

7

And they spoke to him saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants for ever.

7

І вони говорили йому, кажучи: „Якщо ти будеш добрим для цього наро́ду, і зробиш за волею їх, і говори́тимеш їм добрі слова́, то вони будуть тобі раба́ми по всі дні“.

But he forsook the advice of the old men which they had given him, and consulted with the young men, who had grown up with him, that stood before him.

Та він відкинув пораду старши́х, що радили йому, і радився з молодика́ми, що ви́росли ра́зом із ним, що стояли перед ним.

And he said to them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people, who have spoken to me saying, Lighten the yoke which thy father put upon us?

І сказав він до них: „Що́ ви радите, і що́ відповімо́ цьому́ наро́дові, який говорив мені, кажучи: Полегши́ ярмо́, яке твій ба́тько наклав був на нас“.

10

And the young men that had grown up with him spoke to him saying, Thus shalt thou say to the people who have spoken to thee saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, and lighten thou it for us, -- thus shalt thou say to them: My little [finger] is thicker than my father's loins;

І говорили з ним ті молодики́, що виросли з ним, кажучи: „Так скажеш тому наро́дові, що промовляв до тебе, говорячи: „Твій ба́тько вчинив був тяжки́м наше ярмо́, а ти дай поле́гшу нам.“ Отак скажеш до них: Мій мізи́нець грубілий за сте́гна мого батька!

and whereas my father laid a heavy yoke upon you, *I* will add to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but *I* [will chastise you] with scorpions.

А тепер: мій батько наклав був на вас тяжке́ ярмо, а я доба́влю до вашого ярма! Батько мій карав вас бича́ми, а я би́тиму скорпіо́нами“.

And Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed saying, Come again to me on the third day.

І прийшов Єровоам та ввесь народ до Рехав'ама третього дня, як цар говорив, кажучи: „Верніться до мене третього дня“.

13

And the king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the advice of the old men,

І цар жорсто́ко відповів їм. І відкинув цар Рехав'ам пораду старши́х,

14

and spoke to them according to the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but *I* will add to it; my father chastised you with whips, but *I* [will chastise you] with scorpions.

14

і говорив до них за порадою тих молодикі́в, кажучи: „Мій батько вчинив був тяжки́м ваше ярмо, а я добавлю до нього! Батько мій карав вас бичами, а я — скорпіонами!“

15

So the king hearkened not to the people; for it was brought about by God, that Jehovah might give effect to his word, which he spoke through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

І не послухався цар наро́ду, бо це спричи́нене було від Бога, — щоб спра́вдити Господе́ві слово Своє, яке Він говорив був через шілонянина Ахійю, Неватового сина.

The Kingdom Divided

And all Israel saw that the king hearkened not to them; and the people answered the king saying, What portion have we in David? and [we have] no inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel. Now see to thine own house, David! And all Israel went to their tents.

І побачив увесь Ізраїль, що цар не послухався їх, і народ відповів царе́ві, кажучи: „Яка нам части́на в Давиді? І спа́дщини нема нам у сині Єссе́я! Усі до наметів своїх, о Ізраїлю! Позна́й тепер дім свій, Давиде!“ І пішов увесь Ізраїль до наметів своїх...

But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

17

А Ізраїлеві сини, що сиділи в Юдиних містах, — то над ними зацарюва́в Рехав'ам.

18

And king Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the levy; but the children of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. And king Rehoboam hastened to mount his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.

І послав цар Рехав'ам Гадорама, що був над дани́ною, та Ізра́їлеві сини закидали його камі́нням, і він помер. А цар Рехав'ам поспішив сісти на колесни́цю та втекти́ до Єрусалиму.

19

And Israel rebelled against the house of David, unto this day.

19

І відпав Ізраїль від Давидового дому, і так є аж до цього дня.
