  • Job's Response to Zophar

    And Job answered and said,
  • Job Replies: The Lord Has Done This

    Then Job answered and said:
  • Truly ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you!
  • “No doubt you are the people,
    and wisdom will die with you.
  • I also have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you; and who knoweth not such things as these?
  • But I have understanding as well as you;
    I am not inferior to you.
    Who does not know such things as these?
  • I am to be one that is a derision to his friend, I who call upon +God, and whom he will answer: a derision is the just upright [man].
  • I am a laughingstock to my friends;
    I, who called to God and he answered me,
    a just and blameless man, am a laughingstock.
  • He that is ready to stumble with the foot is a lamp despised in the thought of him that is at ease.
  • In the thought of one who is at ease there is contempt for misfortune;
    it is ready for those whose feet slip.
  • The tents of desolators are in peace, and they that provoke God are secure; into whose hand +God bringeth.
  • The tents of robbers are at peace,
    and those who provoke God are secure,
    who bring their god in their hand.a
  • But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowl of the heavens, and they shall tell thee;
  • “But ask the beasts, and they will teach you;
    the birds of the heavens, and they will tell you;
  • Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee; and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee.
  • or the bushes of the earth, and they will teach you;b
    and the fish of the sea will declare to you.
  • Who knoweth not in all these, that the hand of Jehovah hath wrought this?
  • Who among all these does not know
    that the hand of the Lord has done this?
  • In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the spirit of all flesh of man.
  • In his hand is the life of every living thing
    and the breath of all mankind.
  • Doth not the ear try words, as the palate tasteth food?
  • Does not the ear test words
    as the palate tastes food?
  • With the aged is wisdom, and in length of days understanding.
  • Wisdom is with the aged,
    and understanding in length of days.
  • With him is wisdom and might; he hath counsel and understanding.
  • “With Godc are wisdom and might;
    he has counsel and understanding.
  • Behold, he breaketh down, and it is not built again; he shutteth up a man, and there is no opening.
  • If he tears down, none can rebuild;
    if he shuts a man in, none can open.
  • Behold, he withholdeth the waters, and they dry up; and he sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth.
  • If he withholds the waters, they dry up;
    if he sends them out, they overwhelm the land.
  • With him is strength and effectual knowledge; the deceived and the deceiver are his.
  • With him are strength and sound wisdom;
    the deceived and the deceiver are his.
  • He leadeth counsellors away spoiled, and judges maketh he fools;
  • He leads counselors away stripped,
    and judges he makes fools.
  • He weakeneth the government of kings, and bindeth their loins with a fetter;
  • He looses the bonds of kings
    and binds a waistcloth on their hips.
  • He leadeth priests away spoiled, and overthroweth the mighty;
  • He leads priests away stripped
    and overthrows the mighty.
  • He depriveth of speech the trusty, and taketh away the judgment of the elders;
  • He deprives of speech those who are trusted
    and takes away the discernment of the elders.
  • He poureth contempt upon nobles, and slackeneth the girdle of the mighty;
  • He pours contempt on princes
    and loosens the belt of the strong.
  • He discovereth deep things out of darkness, and bringeth out into light the shadow of death;
  • He uncovers the deeps out of darkness
    and brings deep darkness to light.
  • He increaseth the nations, and destroyeth them; he spreadeth out the nations, and bringeth them in;
  • He makes nations great, and he destroys them;
    he enlarges nations, and leads them away.
  • He taketh away the understanding of the chiefs of the people of the earth, and causeth them to wander in a pathless waste.
  • He takes away understanding from the chiefs of the people of the earth
    and makes them wander in a trackless waste.
  • They grope in the dark without light, and he maketh them to stagger like a drunkard.
  • They grope in the dark without light,
