Job Loses his Health

And there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah, and Satan also came among them to present himself before Jehovah.

Було ж подібно до того дня, і ангели Божі прийшли, щоб постати перед Господом, а серед них прийшов і диявол.

And Jehovah said to Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered Jehovah and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

І Господь запитав диявола: Звідки ти йдеш? Тоді сказав диявол перед Господом: Я прийшов, пройшовши піднебесну і обійшовши всесвіт.

And Jehovah said to Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God and abstaineth from evil? and still he remaineth firm in his integrity, though thou movedst me against him, to swallow him up without cause.

Сказав же Господь: Чи ж ти звернув увагу на Мого раба Йова? Адже немає з усіх, що на землі, такого незлобливого, як він, чоловіка, праведного, невинного, побожного, що віддаляється від усякого зла! Ще має незлобність. Ти ж дарма сказав знищити його маєток.

And Satan answered Jehovah and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life;

А диявол у відповідь сказав Господу: Шкіра за шкіру. Те, чим людина володіє, вона дасть у викуп за свою душу.

but put forth thy hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, [and see] if he will not curse thee to thy face!

5

Ні, але простягнувши Твою руку, доторкнися до його тіла і його костей. Чи ж не поблагословить Тебе в обличчя?

And Jehovah said to Satan, Behold, he is in thy hand; only spare his life.

Та Господь сказав дияволові: Ось Я передаю його тобі, тільки збережи його душу!

And Satan went forth from the presence of Jehovah; and he smote Job with a grievous botch from the sole of his foot unto his crown.

Вийшовши від Господа, диявол уразив Йова страшними гнійними струпами — від голови аж до ніг.

And he took a potsherd to scrape himself with; and he sat among the ashes.

І той узяв черепок, щоб зшкрябувати гній, і сидів на гноїщі за містом.

And his wife said to him, Dost thou still remain firm in thine integrity? curse God and die.

А коли пройшло багато часу, то його жінка промовила до нього: Доки терпітимеш, кажучи: 9a Ось почекаю час ще недовго, очікуючи надію мого спасіння. 9b Бо ось із землі знищено пам’ять про тебе, синів і дочок, болі й муки мого лона, які я надаремно боляче переносила. 9c Ти ж сам сидиш у гної червів, ночуючи на дворі. 9d А я мандрую і служу з місця на місце, і з дому до дому, очікуючи, коли зайде сонце, щоб я спочила від трудів і болів, які мене тепер охоплюють. 9e Але скажи якесь слово на Господа і помирай!

But he said to her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. We have also received good from God, and should we not receive evil? In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

Він же, поглянувши на неї, сказав: Ти промовила, як одна з нерозумних жінок. Якщо ми прийняли добро з руки Господа, то хіба не перетерпимо зло? У всьому цьому, що з ним трапилося, Йов нічим не згрішив устами перед Богом.

Job's Three Friends

And three friends of Job heard of all this evil that was come upon him. And they came each one from his place: Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite; and they made an appointment together to come to condole with him and to comfort him.

Почувши про все зло, яке найшло на нього, троє його друзів прийшли до нього, — кожний з власної країни: Еліфас, цар теманський, Валдад, тиран савхейський, Софар, цар мінейський, і вони прийшли до нього одностайно, щоб його потішити і відвідати.

And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice and wept. And they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward the heavens.

Побачивши його здалека, вони не впізнали його і, закричавши гучним голосом, заплакали, роздерши кожний свій одяг і посипавши себе землею.

And they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights; and none spoke a word to him; for they saw that [his] anguish was very great.

13

Сім днів і сім ночей вони сиділи з ним, і ніхто з них не заговорив, бо бачили, що рана страшна і дуже велика.
