Job's Former Blessings
And Job continued his parable and said,
And Job continued his parable and said,
І Йов далі вів мову свою та й сказав:
Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when +God preserved me;
„О, коли б я був той, як за місяців давніх, як за днів тих, коли борони́в мене Бог,
When his lamp shone over my head, [and] by his light I walked through darkness;
коли над головою моєю світився світильник Його, і при світлі його я ходив в темноті́,
As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret counsel of +God was over my tent,
як був я за днів тих своєї погожої о́сени, коли Божа милість була над наме́том моїм,
When the Almighty was yet with me, my young men round about me;
коли Всемогу́тній зо мною ще був, а навко́ло мене — мої діти,
When my steps were bathed in milk, and the rock poured out beside me rivers of oil! ...
коли мої кро́ки купалися в маслі, а скеля оли́вні струмки́ біля мене лила́!
When I went out to the gate by the city, when I prepared my seat on the broadway,
Коли я вихо́див до брами при місті, і ставив на площі сиді́ння своє,
The young men saw me, and hid themselves; and the aged arose [and] stood up;
як тільки вбачали мене юнаки́ — то ховались, а ста́рші встава́ли й стояли,
Princes refrained from talking, and laid the hand on their mouth;
зве́рхники стримували свою мову та клали долоню на уста свої, —
The voice of the nobles was hushed, and their tongue cleaved to their palate.
ховався тоді голос володарів, а їхній язик приліпа́в їм був до піднебі́ння,
When the ear heard [me], then it blessed me, and when the eye saw [me], it gave witness to me;
Бо яке ухо чуло про мене, то звало блаже́нним мене, і яке око бачило, то свідкувало за мене, —
For I delivered the afflicted that cried, and the fatherless who had no helper.
бо я рятував бідаря́, що про поміч кричав, і сироту́ та безпо́мічного.
The blessing of him that was perishing came upon me, and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.
Благослове́ння гинучого на ме́не прихо́дило, а серце вдовиці чинив я співа́ючим!
I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; my justice was as a mantle and a turban.
Зодягавсь я у праведність, і вона зодягала мене, немов плащ та заві́й було право моє.
I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame;
Очима я був для сліпого, а кривому — ногами я був.
I was a father to the needy, and the cause which I knew not I searched out;
Бідаря́м я був батьком, супере́чку ж, якої не знав, я досліджував.
And I broke the jaws of the unrighteous, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth.
Й я торо́щив злочинцеві ще́лепи, і виривав із зубів його схо́плене.
And I said, I shall die in my nest, and multiply my days as the sand;
І я говорив: Умру я в своєму гнізді́, і свої дні я помно́жу, немов той пісок:
My root shall be spread out to the waters, and the dew will lie all night on my branch;
для води був відкритий мій корень, а роса зоставалась на вітці моїй.
My glory shall be fresh in me, and my bow be renewed in my hand.
Моя слава була при мені все нова́, і в руці моїй лук мій відно́влював силу.
Unto me they listened, and waited, and kept silence for my counsel:
Мене слу́халися й дожида́ли, і мовчали на раду мою.
After my words they spoke not again, and my speech dropped upon them;
По слові моїм уже не говорили, і падала мова моя на них кра́плями.
And they waited for me as for the rain, and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.
І чекали мене, як дощу, і уста свої відкривали, немов на весінній той дощик.
[If] I laughed on them, they believed [it] not; and they troubled not the serenity of my countenance.
Коли я, бувало, сміявся до них, то не вірили, та світла обличчя мого не гаси́ли.
