Job's Final Appeal

I made a covenant with mine eyes; and how should I fix my regard upon a maid?

1

Я поклав завіт моїм очам, — і не подумаю про дівицю.

2

For what would have been [my] portion of +God from above, and what the heritage of the Almighty from on high?

2

А яку частку Бог визначив згори, і який спадок Всесильного з висот?

3

Is not calamity for the unrighteous? and misfortune for the workers of iniquity?

Хіба згуба не для неправедного, а відчуження не для тих, які чинять беззаконня?

4

Doth not he see my ways, and number all my steps?

4

Хіба Він сам не побачить мою дорогу і не порахує всі мої кроки?

5

If I have walked with falsehood, and my foot hath hasted to deceit,

5

Якщо ж я ходив з тими, які висміюють, якщо ж і моя нога поспішала на обман,

6

(Let me be weighed in an even balance, and +God will take knowledge of my blamelessness;)

6

нехай вже стану я на справедливу вагу, а Господь знає мою невинність.

7

If my step have turned out of the way, and my heart followed mine eyes, and if any blot cleaveth to my hands;

7

Якщо моя нога ухилилася з дороги, якщо ж і моє серце пішло за оком, якщо ж і моїми руками я доторкнувся до дарів,

8

Let me sow, and another eat; and let mine offspring be rooted out.

8

то нехай сію я, а інші хай їдять, і нехай виявлюся без кореня на землі.

9

If my heart have been enticed unto a woman, so that I laid wait at my neighbour's door,

9

Якщо моє серце пішло за жінкою іншого чоловіка, якщо я і таємно очікував біля її дверей,

10

Let my wife grind for another, and let others bow down upon her.

10

то нехай і моя жінка вгодить іншому, а мої діти хай зазнають приниження.

11

For this is an infamy; yea, it is an iniquity [to be judged by] the judges:

11

Бо опоганити заміжню жінку — це гнів люті, який не зупинити.

12

For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.

Адже це — вогонь, що горить з усіх боків, куди тільки нападав, до кореня знищував.

13

If I have despised the cause of my bondman or of my bondmaid, when they contended with me,

13

Якщо ж і знехтував я судом мого слуги чи служниці, коли вони в мене судилися,

14

What then should I do when God riseth up? and if he visited, what should I answer him?

14

то що я зроблю, коли Господь мені вчинить допит? Якщо ж відвідає, то яку відповідь дам?

15

Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not One fashion us in the womb?

15

Чи не так, як і я постав у лоні, постали і вони? Ми ж постали в тому ж лоні.

16

If I have withheld the poor from [their] desire, or caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

16

А немічні задовольнили потребу, яку лиш мали, я ж не відкинув око вдови.

17

Or have eaten my morsel alone, so that the fatherless ate not thereof,

17

Якщо ж я сам їв кусень мого хліба, а сироті не подав, —

18

(For from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, and I have guided the [widow] from my mother's womb;)

18

хоча я від моєї молодості годував сироту, як батько, і наставляв від лона моєї матері, —

19

If I have seen any perishing for want of clothing, or any needy without covering;

19

якщо ж я не зглянувся на нагого, який гинув, і не одягнув,

20

If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my lambs;

20

і слабкі мене не поблагословили, а їхні плечі не грілися з постригу моїх ягнят,

21

If I have lifted up my hand against an orphan, because I saw my help in the gate:

21

якщо я підняв проти сироти руку в надії, бо в мене була велика допомога,

22

[Then] let my shoulder fall from the shoulder-blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone!

22

то нехай же відпаде моє плече від ключиці, а моя рука нехай відламається від ліктя.

23

For calamity from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his excellency I was powerless.

23

Адже мене охопив Господній страх, і його тягаря я не перенесу.

24

If I have made gold my hope, or said to the fine gold, My confidence!

24

Якщо я поклав золото, як мою силу, якщо ж і на дорогоцінний камінь я поклав надію,

25

If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gotten much;

25

якщо ж я зрадів, коли моє багатство стало великим, якщо ж і на нечисленне я поклав свою руку,

26

If I beheld the sun when it shone, or the moon walking in brightness,

26

чи не побачу сонце, що сходить, що заходить, а місяць, що маліє? Адже це не від них.

27

And my heart have been secretly enticed, so that my mouth kissed my hand:

27

І якщо потай обманене було моє серце, якщо ж і поцілував я мою руку, приклавши до моїх уст,

28

This also would be an iniquity for the judge, for I should have denied the God who is above.

28

то це вже мені нехай вважається за найбільше беззаконня, бо я вчинив обман перед Всевишнім Господом.

29

If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, and exulted when evil befell him;

29

Якщо ж я і зрадів падінням моїх ворогів, і моє серце сказало: Добре! —

30

(Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by asking his life with a curse;)

30

то нехай же тоді моє вухо почує моє прокляття, і нехай перешіптується народ, коли мені чинять зло.

31

If the men of my tent said not, Who shall find one that hath not been satisfied with his meat? --

31

Якщо ж часто мої служниці казали: Хто дав би нам насититися його тілом? Хоч я був дуже добрий.

32

The stranger did not lodge without; I opened my doors to the pathway.

32

Чужинець не мешкав назовні, а мої двері були відкриті для кожного, хто приходив.

33

If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom,

33

Якщо ж, грішачи, я несвідомо скрив мій гріх,

34

Because I feared the great multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and went not out of the door, ...

34

бо не посоромився великої юрби, щоб перед ними признатися? Хіба ж дозволив я слабому вийти з моїх дверей з порожнім подолом?

35

Oh that I had one to hear me! Behold my signature: let the Almighty answer me! And let mine opponent write an accusation!

35

О, хто б мені дав того, хто вислухав би мене! Якщо я не побоявся Господньої руки, а письмо, яке я мав проти когось,

36

Would I not take it upon my shoulder? I would bind it on to me [as] a crown;

36

читав, поклавши, як вінець на плечі,

37

I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I come near to him.

37

і якщо його не віддав я, подерши, і нічого не взявши від боржника,

38

If my land cry out against me, and its furrows weep together;

38

якщо проти мене коли-небудь земля застогнала, якщо і її борозни разом заплакали,

39

If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, and have tormented to death the souls of its owners:

39

якщо ж я з’їв її силу сам безплатно, якщо ж я засмутив, забравши душу власника землі,

40

Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and tares instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

40

то замість пшениці нехай мені вийде будяк, а замість ячменю — бур’ян! І Йов зупинився у своїй мові.
