Darby Bible Translation

New Living Translation

  • Elihu Proclaims God's Majesty

Aye, my heart trembleth at this also, and leapeth up out of its place:
  • “My heart pounds as I think of this.
    It trembles within me.
  • Hear attentively the roar of his voice, and the murmur going forth from his mouth.
  • Listen carefully to the thunder of God’s voice
as it rolls from his mouth.
  • He sendeth it forth under the whole heaven, and his lightning unto the ends of the earth.
  • It rolls across the heavens,
and his lightning flashes in every direction.
  • After it a voice roareth: he thundereth with the voice of his excellency, and holdeth not back the flashes when his voice is heard.
  • Then comes the roaring of the thunder —
the tremendous voice of his majesty.
He does not restrain it when he speaks.
  • God thundereth marvellously with his voice, doing great things which we do not comprehend.
  • God’s voice is glorious in the thunder.
We can’t even imagine the greatness of his power.
  • For he saith to the snow, Fall on the earth! and to the pouring rain, even the pouring rains of his might.
  • “He directs the snow to fall on the earth
and tells the rain to pour down.
  • He sealeth up the hand of every man; that all men may know his work.
  • Then everyone stops working
so they can watch his power.
  • And the wild beast goeth into its lair, and they remain in their dens.
  • The wild animals take cover
    and stay inside their dens.
  • From the chamber [of the south] cometh the whirlwind; and cold from the winds of the north.
  • The stormy wind comes from its chamber,
and the driving winds bring the cold.
  • By the breath of God ice is given; and the breadth of the waters is straitened.
  • God’s breath sends the ice,
    freezing wide expanses of water.
  • Also with plentiful moisture he loadeth the thick clouds, his light dispels the cloud;
  • He loads the clouds with moisture,
and they flash with his lightning.
  • And they are turned every way by his guidance, that they may do whatsoever he commandeth them upon the face of the circuit of the earth,
  • The clouds churn about at his direction.
They do whatever he commands throughout the earth.
  • Whether he cause it to come as a rod, or for his land, or in mercy.
  • He makes these things happen either to punish people
or to show his unfailing love.
  • Hearken unto this, Job; stand still and discern the wondrous works of God.
  • “Pay attention to this, Job.
Stop and consider the wonderful miracles of God!
  • Dost thou know how +God hath disposed them, and how he causeth the lightning of his cloud to flash?
  • Do you know how God controls the storm
and causes the lightning to flash from his clouds?
  • Dost thou know about the balancings of the clouds, the wondrous works of him that is perfect in knowledge?
  • Do you understand how he moves the clouds
    with wonderful perfection and skill?
  • How thy garments become warm when he quieteth the earth by the south wind?
  • When you are sweltering in your clothes
and the south wind dies down and everything is still,
  • Hast thou with him spread out the sky, firm, like a molten mirror?
  • he makes the skies reflect the heat like a bronze mirror.
    Can you do that?
  • Teach us what we shall say unto him! We cannot order [our words] by reason of darkness.
  • “So teach the rest of us what to say to God.
We are too ignorant to make our own arguments.
  • Shall it be told him if I would speak? if a man [so] say, surely he shall be swallowed up.
  • Should God be notified that I want to speak?
Can people even speak when they are confused?a
  • And now [men] see not the light as it gleameth, it is [hidden] in the skies. But the wind passeth by and cleareth them.
  • We cannot look at the sun,
for it shines brightly in the sky
when the wind clears away the clouds.
  • From the north cometh gold; with +God is terrible majesty.
  • So also, golden splendor comes from the mountain of God.b
He is clothed in dazzling splendor.
  • The Almighty, we cannot find him out: excellent in power, and in judgment, and in abundance of justice, he doth not afflict.
  • We cannot imagine the power of the Almighty;
but even though he is just and righteous,
    he does not destroy us.
  • Men do therefore fear him: he respecteth not any that are wise of heart.
  • No wonder people everywhere fear him.
All who are wise show him reverence.c
