Darby Bible Translation

New King James Version

  • Job Humbles Himself Before God

    And Jehovah answered Job and said,
  • God’s Power and Wisdom

    Moreover the Lord answered Job, and said:
  • Shall he that will contend with the Almighty instruct [him]? he that reproveth +God, let him answer it.
  • “Shall the one who contends with the Almighty correct Him?
    He who rebukes God, let him answer it.”
  • And Job answered Jehovah and said,
  • Job’s Response to God

    Then Job answered the Lord and said:
  • Behold, I am nought: what shall I answer thee? I will lay my hand upon my mouth.
  • “Behold, I am vile;
    What shall I answer You?
    I lay my hand over my mouth.
  • Once have I spoken, and I will not answer; yea twice, but I will proceed no further.
  • Once I have spoken, but I will not answer;
    Yes, twice, but I will proceed no further.”
  • And Jehovah answered Job out of the whirlwind and said,
  • God’s Challenge to Job

    Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said:
  • Gird up now thy loins like a man: I will demand of thee, and inform thou me.
  • “Now [a]prepare yourself like a man;
    I will question you, and you shall answer Me:
  • Wilt thou also annul my judgment? wilt thou condemn me that thou mayest be righteous?
  • “Would you indeed [b]annul My judgment?
    Would you condemn Me that you may be justified?
  • Hast thou an arm like God? or canst thou thunder with a voice like him?
  • Have you an arm like God?
    Or can you thunder with a voice like His?
  • Deck thyself now with glory and excellency, and clothe thyself with majesty and splendour.
  • Then adorn yourself with majesty and splendor,
    And array yourself with glory and beauty.
  • Cast abroad the ragings of thine anger, and look on every one that is proud, and abase him:
  • Disperse the rage of your wrath;
    Look on everyone who is proud, and humble him.
  • Look on every one that is proud, bring him low, and tread down the wicked in their place:
  • Look on everyone who is proud, and bring him low;
    Tread down the wicked in their place.
  • Hide them in the dust together; bind their faces in secret.
  • Hide them in the dust together,
    Bind their faces in hidden darkness.
  • Then will I also praise thee, because thy right hand saveth thee.
  • Then I will also confess to you
    That your own right hand can save you.
  • See now the behemoth, which I made with thee: he eateth grass as an ox.
  • “Look now at the [c]behemoth, which I made along with you;
    He eats grass like an ox.
  • Behold now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the muscles of his belly.
  • See now, his strength is in his hips,
    And his power is in his stomach muscles.
  • He bendeth his tail like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are woven together.
  • He moves his tail like a cedar;
    The sinews of his thighs are tightly knit.
  • His bones are tubes of bronze, his members are like bars of iron.
  • His bones are like beams of bronze,
    His ribs like bars of iron.
  • He is the chief of God's ways: he that made him gave him his sword.
  • He is the first of the ways of God;
    Only He who made him can bring near His sword.
  • For the mountains bring him forth food, where all the beasts of the field play.
  • Surely the mountains yield food for him,
    And all the beasts of the field play there.
  • He lieth under lotus-bushes, in the covert of the reed and fen:
  • He lies under the lotus trees,
    In a covert of reeds and marsh.
  • Lotus-bushes cover him with their shade; the willows of the brook surround him.
  • The lotus trees cover him with their shade;
    The willows by the brook surround him.
  • Lo, the river overfloweth -- he startleth not: he is confident though a Jordan break forth against his mouth.
  • Indeed the river may rage,
    Yet he is not disturbed;
    He is confident, though the Jordan gushes into his mouth,
  • Shall he be taken in front? will they pierce through [his] nose in the trap?
  • Though he takes it in his eyes,
    Or one pierces his nose with a snare.
