Darby Bible Translation

New Living Translation

  • God's Power Shown in Creatures

Wilt thou draw out the leviathan with the hook, and press down his tongue with a cord?
  • The LORD’s Challenge Continues

a“Can you catch Leviathanb with a hook
or put a noose around its jaw?
  • Wilt thou put a rush-rope into his nose, and pierce his jaw with a spike?
  • Can you tie it with a rope through the nose
or pierce its jaw with a spike?
  • Will he make many supplications unto thee? or will he speak softly unto thee?
  • Will it beg you for mercy
    or implore you for pity?
  • Will he make a covenant with thee? wilt thou take him as a bondman for ever?
  • Will it agree to work for you,
to be your slave for life?
  • Wilt thou play with him as with a bird, and wilt thou bind him for thy maidens?
  • Can you make it a pet like a bird,
or give it to your little girls to play with?
  • Shall partners make traffic of him, will they divide him among merchants?
  • Will merchants try to buy it
to sell it in their shops?
  • Wilt thou fill his skin with darts, and his head with fish-spears?
  • Will its hide be hurt by spears
or its head by a harpoon?
  • Lay thy hand upon him; remember the battle, -- do no more!
  • If you lay a hand on it,
you will certainly remember the battle that follows.
    You won’t try that again!
  • Lo, hope as to him is belied: is not one cast down even at the sight of him?
  • cNo, it is useless to try to capture it.
The hunter who attempts it will be knocked down.
  • None is so bold as to stir him up; and who is he that will stand before me?
  • And since no one dares to disturb it,
who then can stand up to me?
  • Who hath first given to me, that I should repay [him]? [Whatsoever is] under the whole heaven is mine.
  • Who has given me anything that I need to pay back?
    Everything under heaven is mine.
  • I will not be silent as to his parts, the story of his power, and the beauty of his structure.
  • “I want to emphasize Leviathan’s limbs
and its enormous strength and graceful form.
  • Who can uncover the surface of his garment? who can come within his double jaws?
  • Who can strip off its hide,
and who can penetrate its double layer of armor?d
  • Who can open the doors of his face? Round about his teeth is terror.
  • Who could pry open its jaws?
    For its teeth are terrible!
  • The rows of his shields are a pride, shut up together [as with] a close seal.
  • The scales on its back are likee rows of shields
    tightly sealed together.
  • One is so near to another that no air can come between them;
  • They are so close together
that no air can get between them.
  • They are joined each to its fellow; they stick together, and cannot be sundered.
  • Each scale sticks tight to the next.
They interlock and cannot be penetrated.
  • His sneezings flash light, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.
  • “When it sneezes, it flashes light!
Its eyes are like the red of dawn.
  • Out of his mouth go forth flames; sparks of fire leap out:
  • Lightning leaps from its mouth;
    flames of fire flash out.
  • Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, as out of a boiling pot and cauldron.
  • Smoke streams from its nostrils
like steam from a pot heated over burning rushes.
  • His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth.
  • Its breath would kindle coals,
for flames shoot from its mouth.
  • In his neck lodgeth strength, and terror danceth before him.
  • “The tremendous strength in Leviathan’s neck
    strikes terror wherever it goes.
  • The flakes of his flesh are joined together: they are fused upon him, they cannot be moved.
  • Its flesh is hard and firm
    and cannot be penetrated.
  • His heart is firm as a stone, yea, firm as the nether [millstone].
  • Its heart is hard as rock,
    hard as a millstone.
  • When he raiseth himself up, the mighty are afraid: they are beside themselves with consternation.
  • When it rises, the mighty are afraid,
    gripped by terror.
  • If any reach him with a sword, it cannot hold; neither spear, nor dart, nor harpoon.
  • No sword can stop it,
    no spear, dart, or javelin.
  • He esteemeth iron as straw, bronze as rotten wood.
  • Iron is nothing but straw to that creature,
and bronze is like rotten wood.
  • The arrow will not make him flee; slingstones are turned with him into stubble.
  • Arrows cannot make it flee.
Stones shot from a sling are like bits of grass.
  • Clubs are counted as stubble; he laugheth at the shaking of a javelin.
  • Clubs are like a blade of grass,
and it laughs at the swish of javelins.
  • His under parts are sharp potsherds: he spreadeth a threshing-sledge upon the mire.
  • Its belly is covered with scales as sharp as glass.
It plows up the ground as it drags through the mud.
  • He maketh the deep to boil like a pot; he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment;
  • “Leviathan makes the water boil with its commotion.
It stirs the depths like a pot of ointment.
  • He maketh the path to shine after him: one would think the deep to be hoary.
  • The water glistens in its wake,
    making the sea look white.
  • Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear.
  • Nothing on earth is its equal,
    no other creature so fearless.
  • He beholdeth all high things; he is king over all the proud beasts.
  • Of all the creatures, it is the proudest.
It is the king of beasts.”
