Job Continues: Life Seems Futile
Hath not man a life of labour upon earth? and are not his days like the days of a hireling?

As a bondman earnestly desireth the shadow, and a hireling expecteth his wages,
Человек — словно раб, мечтающий о прохладе, словно батрак, ждущий вознагражденья.
So am I made to possess months of vanity, and wearisome nights are appointed to me.
Месяц за месяцем в опустошении прошли, ночи мои проходят в страданьях.
If I lie down, I say, When shall I rise up, and the darkness be gone? and I am full of tossings until the dawn.
Когда ложусь, я думаю: "Когда я встану?" Но длится ночь, и ворочаюсь я, пока не встанет солнце.
My flesh is clothed with worms and clods of dust; my skin is broken, and suppurates.
Черви и грязь покрывают тело моё, кожа потрескалась и нарывает.
My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and are spent without hope.
Дни мои торопливей, чем челноки ткача. И завершается жизнь моя без надежды.
Remember thou that my life is wind; mine eye shall no more see good.
Господи, вспомни, что жизнь моя лишь вздох, и ничего хорошего я не увижу вновь.
The eye of him that hath seen me shall behold me no [more]: thine eyes are upon me, and I am not.
И Ты меня не увидишь: Ты будешь меня искать, но не будет меня.
The cloud consumeth and vanisheth away; so he that goeth down to Sheol shall not come up.
Облака редеют и уходят. Так и с человеком — он похоронен в могиле и не вернётся обратно.
He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him again.
Он никогда не вернётся в свой старый оставленный дом, чужим он будет в доме этом.
Therefore I will not restrain my mouth: I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.
И поэтому не буду я молчать — я всё скажу! Мой дух страдает — я жаловаться буду, ибо горестно душе моей.
Am I a sea, or a sea-monster, that thou settest a watch over me?
Разве я неукротимое море иль чудовище морское? Не потому ль следишь за мною постоянно?
When I say, My bed shall comfort me, my couch shall ease my complaint;
Успокоение должна мне дать постель, — освобождение и отдых.
Then thou scarest me with dreams, and terrifiest me through visions;
Но, Господи, всегда, когда ложусь, видениями меня кошмарными пугаешь.
So that my soul chooseth strangling, death, rather than my bones.
Поэтому уж лучше быть задушенным, чем жить, как я живу.
I loathe it; I shall not live always: let me alone, for my days are a breath.
Я ненавижу жизнь мою — сдаюсь. Жить вечно не хочу. Оставь меня! Жизнь ничего не значит!
What is man, that thou makest much of him? and that thou settest thy heart upon him?
И почему Тебе, Господь, так важен человек? Честь воздаёшь ему за что? Зачем его Ты замечаешь?
And that thou visitest him every morning, triest him every moment?
Почему Ты его навещаешь каждое утро и испытываешь каждый миг?
How long wilt thou not look away from me, nor let me alone till I swallow down my spittle?
Господь, Ты глаз с меня не сводишь, ни на секунду меня не оставляешь.
Have I sinned, what do I unto thee, thou Observer of men? Why hast thou set me as an object of assault for thee, so that I am become a burden to myself?
Ты следишь за тем, что делают люди. Что ж, если согрешил я, что могу я сделать? Ну почему вдруг стал я Твоею целью? Иль стал я преткновеньем для Тебя?
And why dost not thou forgive my transgression and take away mine iniquity? for now shall I lie down in the dust, and thou shalt seek me early, and I shall not be.
И почему ты не простишь меня за то, что сделал я неверно? Почему Ты не отпустишь все грехи мои? Ведь скоро я умру и лягу в могилу, и будешь Ты искать меня, но я уйду, и меня не будет".
