Darby Bible Translation

New International Version

  • Why Do You Boast of Mischief?

    {To the chief Musician: an instruction. Of David; when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, and said unto him, David came to the house of Ahimelech.} Why boastest thou thyself in evil, thou mighty man? The loving-kindness of God [abideth] continually.
  • Psalm 52a

    For the director of music. A maskilb of David. When Doeg the Edomite had gone to Saul and told him: “David has gone to the house of Ahimelek.”

    Why do you boast of evil, you mighty hero?
    Why do you boast all day long,
    you who are a disgrace in the eyes of God?
  • Thy tongue deviseth mischievous things, like a sharp razor, practising deceit.
  • You who practice deceit,
    your tongue plots destruction;
    it is like a sharpened razor.
  • Thou hast loved evil rather than good, lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah.
  • You love evil rather than good,
    falsehood rather than speaking the truth.c
  • Thou hast loved all devouring words, O deceitful tongue!
  • You love every harmful word,
    you deceitful tongue!
  • God shall likewise destroy thee for ever; he shall take thee away, and pluck thee out of [thy] tent, and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah.
  • Surely God will bring you down to everlasting ruin:
    He will snatch you up and pluck you from your tent;
    he will uproot you from the land of the living.
  • The righteous also shall see, and fear, and shall laugh at him, [saying,]
  • The righteous will see and fear;
    they will laugh at you, saying,
  • Behold the man that made not God his strength, but put confidence in the abundance of his riches, [and] strengthened himself in his avarice.
  • “Here now is the man
    who did not make God his stronghold
    but trusted in his great wealth
    and grew strong by destroying others!”
  • But as for me, I am like a green olive-tree in the house of God: I will confide in the loving-kindness of God for ever and ever.
  • But I am like an olive tree
    flourishing in the house of God;
    I trust in God’s unfailing love
    for ever and ever.
  • I will praise thee for ever, because thou hast done [it]; and I will wait on thy name, before thy godly ones, for it is good.
  • For what you have done I will always praise you
    in the presence of your faithful people.
    And I will hope in your name,
    for your name is good.
