Darby Bible Translation

New Living Translation

  • Why Do You Boast of Mischief?

{To the chief Musician: an instruction. Of David; when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, and said unto him, David came to the house of Ahimelech.} Why boastest thou thyself in evil, thou mighty man? The loving-kindness of God [abideth] continually.
  • For the choir director: A psalma of David, regarding the time Doeg the Edomite said to Saul, “David has gone to see Ahimelech.”

Why do you boast about your crimes, great warrior?
Don’t you realize God’s justice continues forever?
  • Thy tongue deviseth mischievous things, like a sharp razor, practising deceit.
  • All day long you plot destruction.
    Your tongue cuts like a sharp razor;
you’re an expert at telling lies.
  • Thou hast loved evil rather than good, lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah.
  • You love evil more than good
    and lies more than truth.
    Interlude
  • Thou hast loved all devouring words, O deceitful tongue!
  • You love to destroy others with your words,
    you liar!
  • God shall likewise destroy thee for ever; he shall take thee away, and pluck thee out of [thy] tent, and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah.
  • But God will strike you down once and for all.
He will pull you from your home
and uproot you from the land of the living.
    Interlude
  • The righteous also shall see, and fear, and shall laugh at him, [saying,]
  • The righteous will see it and be amazed.
    They will laugh and say,
  • Behold the man that made not God his strength, but put confidence in the abundance of his riches, [and] strengthened himself in his avarice.
  • “Look what happens to mighty warriors
who do not trust in God.
    They trust their wealth instead
and grow more and more bold in their wickedness.”
  • But as for me, I am like a green olive-tree in the house of God: I will confide in the loving-kindness of God for ever and ever.
  • But I am like an olive tree, thriving in the house of God.
I will always trust in God’s unfailing love.
  • I will praise thee for ever, because thou hast done [it]; and I will wait on thy name, before thy godly ones, for it is good.
  • I will praise you forever, O God,
    for what you have done.
I will trust in your good name
in the presence of your faithful people.
