Darby Bible Translation

New Living Translation

  • Cast Your Cares on the Lord

    {To the chief Musician. On stringed instruments: an instruction. Of David.} Give ear to my prayer, O God; and hide not thyself from my supplication.
  • For the choir director: A psalma of David, to be accompanied by stringed instruments.

    Listen to my prayer, O God.
    Do not ignore my cry for help!
  • Attend unto me, and answer me: I wander about in my plaint, and I moan aloud,
  • Please listen and answer me,
    for I am overwhelmed by my troubles.
  • Because of the voice of the enemy; because of the oppression of the wicked: for they cast iniquity upon me, and in anger they persecute me.
  • My enemies shout at me,
    making loud and wicked threats.
    They bring trouble on me
    and angrily hunt me down.
  • My heart is writhing within me, and the terrors of death are fallen upon me.
  • My heart pounds in my chest.
    The terror of death assaults me.
  • Fear and trembling are come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me.
  • Fear and trembling overwhelm me,
    and I can’t stop shaking.
  • And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away, and be at rest;
  • Oh, that I had wings like a dove;
    then I would fly away and rest!
  • Behold, I would flee afar off, I would lodge in the wilderness; Selah;
  • I would fly far away
    to the quiet of the wilderness.
    Interlude
  • I would hasten my escape from the stormy wind, from the tempest.
  • How quickly I would escape —
    far from this wild storm of hatred.
  • Swallow [them] up, Lord; divide their tongue: for I have seen violence and strife in the city.
  • Confuse them, Lord, and frustrate their plans,
    for I see violence and conflict in the city.
  • Day and night they go about it upon the walls thereof; and iniquity and mischief are in the midst of it.
  • Its walls are patrolled day and night against invaders,
    but the real danger is wickedness within the city.
  • Perversities are in the midst thereof; and oppression and deceit depart not from its streets.
  • Everything is falling apart;
    threats and cheating are rampant in the streets.
  • For it is not an enemy that hath reproached me -- then could I have borne it; neither is it he that hateth me that hath magnified [himself] against me -- then would I have hidden myself from him;
  • It is not an enemy who taunts me —
    I could bear that.
    It is not my foes who so arrogantly insult me —
    I could have hidden from them.
  • But it was thou, a man mine equal, mine intimate, my familiar friend. ...
  • Instead, it is you — my equal,
    my companion and close friend.
  • We who held sweet intercourse together. To the house of God we walked amid the throng.
  • What good fellowship we once enjoyed
    as we walked together to the house of God.
  • Let death seize upon them, let them go down alive into Sheol. For wickedness is in their dwellings, in their midst.
  • Let death stalk my enemies;
    let the graveb swallow them alive,
    for evil makes its home within them.
  • As for me, unto God will I call; and Jehovah will save me.
  • But I will call on God,
    and the LORD will rescue me.
  • Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray and moan aloud; and he will hear my voice.
  • Morning, noon, and night
    I cry out in my distress,
    and the LORD hears my voice.
  • He hath redeemed my soul in peace from the battle against me: for there were many about me.
  • He ransoms me and keeps me safe
    from the battle waged against me,
    though many still oppose me.
  • God will hear, and afflict them: he that is seated of old, (Selah) ... because there is no change in them, and they fear not God.
  • God, who has ruled forever,
    will hear me and humble them.
    Interlude
    For my enemies refuse to change their ways;
    they do not fear God.
  • He hath put forth his hands against such as are at peace with him; he hath profaned his covenant.
  • As for my companion, he betrayed his friends;
    he broke his promises.
  • Smooth were the milky [words] of his mouth, but his heart was war; his words were softer than oil, yet are they drawn swords.
  • His words are as smooth as butter,
    but in his heart is war.
    His words are as soothing as lotion,
    but underneath are daggers!
  • Cast thy burden upon Jehovah, and *he* will sustain thee: he will never suffer the righteous to be moved.
  • Give your burdens to the LORD,
    and he will take care of you.
    He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.
  • And thou, O God, wilt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days. But as for me, I will confide in thee.
  • But you, O God, will send the wicked
    down to the pit of destruction.
    Murderers and liars will die young,
    but I am trusting you to save me.
