Darby Bible Translation

New Living Translation

  • The Waters Have Come Up to My Neck!

    {To the chief Musician. Upon Shoshannim. [A Psalm] of David.} Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto [my] soul.
  • For the choir director: A psalm of David, to be sung to the tune “Lilies.”

    Save me, O God,
    for the floodwaters are up to my neck.
  • I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing; I am come into the depths of waters, and the flood overfloweth me.
  • Deeper and deeper I sink into the mire;
    I can’t find a foothold.
    I am in deep water,
    and the floods overwhelm me.
  • I am weary with my crying, my throat is parched; mine eyes fail while I wait for my God.
  • I am exhausted from crying for help;
    my throat is parched.
    My eyes are swollen with weeping,
    waiting for my God to help me.
  • They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head; they that would destroy me, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored that which I took not away.
  • Those who hate me without cause
    outnumber the hairs on my head.
    Many enemies try to destroy me with lies,
    demanding that I give back what I didn’t steal.
  • Thou, O God, knowest my foolishness, and my trespasses are not hidden from thee.
  • O God, you know how foolish I am;
    my sins cannot be hidden from you.
  • Let not them that wait on thee, Lord, Jehovah of hosts, be ashamed through me; let not those that seek thee be confounded through me, O God of Israel.
  • Don’t let those who trust in you be ashamed because of me,
    O Sovereign LORD of Heaven’s Armies.
    Don’t let me cause them to be humiliated,
    O God of Israel.
  • Because for thy sake I have borne reproach; confusion hath covered my face.
  • For I endure insults for your sake;
    humiliation is written all over my face.
  • I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's sons;
  • Even my own brothers pretend they don’t know me;
    they treat me like a stranger.
  • For the zeal of thy house hath devoured me, and the reproaches of them that reproach thee have fallen upon me.
  • Passion for your house has consumed me,
    and the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.
  • And I wept, my soul was fasting: that also was to my reproach; --
  • When I weep and fast,
    they scoff at me.
  • And I made sackcloth my garment: then I became a proverb to them.
  • When I dress in burlap to show sorrow,
    they make fun of me.
  • They that sit in the gate talk of me, and [I am] the song of the drunkards.
  • I am the favorite topic of town gossip,
    and all the drunks sing about me.
  • But as for me, my prayer is unto thee, Jehovah, in an acceptable time: O God, in the abundance of thy loving-kindness answer me, according to the truth of thy salvation:
  • But I keep praying to you, LORD,
    hoping this time you will show me favor.
    In your unfailing love, O God,
    answer my prayer with your sure salvation.
  • Deliver me out of the mire, let me not sink; let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the depths of waters.
  • Rescue me from the mud;
    don’t let me sink any deeper!
    Save me from those who hate me,
    and pull me from these deep waters.
  • Let not the flood of waters overflow me, neither let the deep swallow me up; and let not the pit shut its mouth upon me.
  • Don’t let the floods overwhelm me,
    or the deep waters swallow me,
    or the pit of death devour me.
  • Answer me, O Jehovah; for thy loving-kindness is good: according to the abundance of thy tender mercies, turn toward me;
  • Answer my prayers, O LORD,
    for your unfailing love is wonderful.
    Take care of me,
    for your mercy is so plentiful.
  • And hide not thy face from thy servant, for I am in trouble: answer me speedily.
  • Don’t hide from your servant;
    answer me quickly, for I am in deep trouble!
  • Draw nigh unto my soul, be its redeemer; ransom me because of mine enemies.
  • Come and redeem me;
    free me from my enemies.
  • *Thou* knowest my reproach, and my shame, and my dishonour: mine adversaries are all before thee.
  • You know of my shame, scorn, and disgrace.
    You see all that my enemies are doing.
  • Reproach hath broken my heart, and I am overwhelmed: and I looked for sympathy, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.
  • Their insults have broken my heart,
    and I am in despair.
    If only one person would show some pity;
    if only one would turn and comfort me.
  • Yea, they gave me gall for my food, and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
  • But instead, they give me poisona for food;
    they offer me sour wine for my thirst.
  • Let their table become a snare before them, and their very welfare a trap;
  • Let the bountiful table set before them become a snare
    and their prosperity become a trap.b
  • Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not, and make their loins continually to shake.
  • Let their eyes go blind so they cannot see,
    and make their bodies shake continually.c
  • Pour out thine indignation upon them, and let the fierceness of thine anger take hold of them.
  • Pour out your fury on them;
    consume them with your burning anger.
  • Let their habitation be desolate; let there be no dweller in their tents.
  • Let their homes become desolate
    and their tents be deserted.
  • For they persecute him whom *thou* hast smitten, and they talk for the sorrow of those whom thou hast wounded.
  • To the one you have punished, they add insult to injury;
    they add to the pain of those you have hurt.
  • Add iniquity unto their iniquity, and let them not come into thy righteousness.
  • Pile their sins up high,
    and don’t let them go free.
  • Let them be blotted out of the book of life, and not be written with the righteous.
  • Erase their names from the Book of Life;
    don’t let them be counted among the righteous.
  • But I am afflicted and sorrowful: let thy salvation, O God, set me secure on high.
  • I am suffering and in pain.
    Rescue me, O God, by your saving power.
  • I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving;
  • Then I will praise God’s name with singing,
    and I will honor him with thanksgiving.
  • And it shall please Jehovah more than an ox, -- a bullock with horns and cloven hoofs.
  • For this will please the LORD more than sacrificing cattle,
    more than presenting a bull with its horns and hooves.
  • The meek shall see it, they shall be glad; ye that seek God, your heart shall live.
  • The humble will see their God at work and be glad.
    Let all who seek God’s help be encouraged.
  • For Jehovah heareth the needy, and despiseth not his prisoners.
  • For the LORD hears the cries of the needy;
    he does not despise his imprisoned people.
  • Let heavens and earth praise him; the seas, and everything that moveth therein.
  • Praise him, O heaven and earth,
    the seas and all that move in them.
  • For God will save Zion, and will build the cities of Judah; and they shall dwell there, and possess it:
  • For God will save Jerusalemd
    and rebuild the towns of Judah.
    His people will live there
    and settle in their own land.
  • And the seed of his servants shall inherit it, and they that love his name shall dwell therein.
  • The descendants of those who obey him will inherit the land,
    and those who love him will live there in safety.
