Darby Bible Translation

New Living Translation

  • In Distress, I Sought the Lord

    {To the chief Musician. On Jeduthun. Of Asaph. A Psalm.} My voice is unto God, and I will cry; my voice is unto God, and he will give ear unto me.
  • For Jeduthun, the choir director: A psalm of Asaph.

    I cry out to God; yes, I shout.
    Oh, that God would listen to me!
  • In the day of my trouble, I sought the Lord: my hand was stretched out in the night, and slacked not; my soul refused to be comforted.
  • When I was in deep trouble,
    I searched for the Lord.
    All night long I prayed, with hands lifted toward heaven,
    but my soul was not comforted.
  • I remembered God, and I moaned; I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed. Selah.
  • I think of God, and I moan,
    overwhelmed with longing for his help.
    Interlude
  • Thou holdest open mine eyelids; I am full of disquiet and cannot speak.
  • You don’t let me sleep.
    I am too distressed even to pray!
  • I consider the days of old, the years of ancient times.
  • I think of the good old days,
    long since ended,
  • I remember my song in the night; I muse in mine own heart, and my spirit maketh diligent search.
  • when my nights were filled with joyful songs.
    I search my soul and ponder the difference now.
  • Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more?
  • Has the Lord rejected me forever?
    Will he never again be kind to me?
  • Hath his loving-kindness ceased for ever? hath [his] word come to an end from generation to generation?
  • Is his unfailing love gone forever?
    Have his promises permanently failed?
  • Hath God forgotten to be gracious? or hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies? Selah.
  • Has God forgotten to be gracious?
    Has he slammed the door on his compassion?
    Interlude
  • Then said I, This is my weakness: -- the years of the right hand of the Most High
  • And I said, “This is my fate;
    the Most High has turned his hand against me.”
  • Will I remember, -- the works of Jah; for I will remember thy wonders of old,
  • But then I recall all you have done, O LORD;
    I remember your wonderful deeds of long ago.
  • And I will meditate upon all thy work, and muse upon thy doings.
  • They are constantly in my thoughts.
    I cannot stop thinking about your mighty works.
  • O God, thy way is in the sanctuary: who is so great a god as God?
  • O God, your ways are holy.
    Is there any god as mighty as you?
  • Thou art the God that doest wonders; thou hast declared thy strength among the peoples.
  • You are the God of great wonders!
    You demonstrate your awesome power among the nations.
  • Thou hast with [thine] arm redeemed thy people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah.
  • By your strong arm, you redeemed your people,
    the descendants of Jacob and Joseph.
    Interlude
  • The waters saw thee, O God, the waters saw thee; they trembled, yea, the depths were troubled:
  • When the Red Seaa saw you, O God,
    its waters looked and trembled!
    The sea quaked to its very depths.
  • The thick clouds poured out water; the skies sent out a sound, yea, thine arrows went abroad:
  • The clouds poured down rain;
    the thunder rumbled in the sky.
    Your arrows of lightning flashed.
  • The voice of thy thunder was in the whirlwind, lightnings lit up the world; the earth was troubled and it quaked.
  • Your thunder roared from the whirlwind;
    the lightning lit up the world!
    The earth trembled and shook.
  • Thy way is in the sea, and thy paths are in the great waters; and thy footsteps are not known.
  • Your road led through the sea,
    your pathway through the mighty waters —
    a pathway no one knew was there!
  • Thou leddest thy people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
  • You led your people along that road like a flock of sheep,
    with Moses and Aaron as their shepherds.
