New Living Translation

  • Hear Us, Shepherd of Israel

    {To the chief Musician. On Shoshannim-Eduth. Of Asaph. A Psalm.} Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph like a flock; thou that sittest [between] the cherubim, shine forth.
  • For the choir director: A psalm of Asaph, to be sung to the tune “Lilies of the Covenant.”

    Please listen, O Shepherd of Israel,
    you who lead Joseph’s descendants like a flock.
    O God, enthroned above the cherubim,
    display your radiant glory
  • Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh, stir up thy strength, and come to our deliverance.
  • to Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh.
    Show us your mighty power.
    Come to rescue us!
  • O God, restore us; and cause thy face to shine, and we shall be saved.
  • Turn us again to yourself, O God.
    Make your face shine down upon us.
    Only then will we be saved.
  • Jehovah, God of hosts, how long will thine anger smoke against the prayer of thy people?
  • O LORD God of Heaven’s Armies,
    how long will you be angry with our prayers?
  • Thou hast fed them with the bread of tears, and given them tears to drink in large measure:
  • You have fed us with sorrow
    and made us drink tears by the bucketful.
  • Thou hast made us a strife unto our neighbours, and our enemies mock among themselves.
  • You have made us the scorna of neighboring nations.
    Our enemies treat us as a joke.
  • Restore us, O God of hosts; and cause thy face to shine, and we shall be saved.
  • Turn us again to yourself, O God of Heaven’s Armies.
    Make your face shine down upon us.
    Only then will we be saved.
  • Thou broughtest a vine out of Egypt; thou didst cast out the nations, and plant it:
  • You brought us from Egypt like a grapevine;
    you drove away the pagan nations and transplanted us into your land.
  • Thou preparedst space before it, and it took deep root, and filled the land;
  • You cleared the ground for us,
    and we took root and filled the land.
  • The mountains were covered with its shadow, and the branches thereof were [like] cedars of God;
  • Our shade covered the mountains;
    our branches covered the mighty cedars.
  • It sent out its boughs unto the sea, and its shoots unto the river.
  • We spread our branches west to the Mediterranean Sea;
    our shoots spread east to the Euphrates River.b
  • Why hast thou broken down its fences, so that all who pass by the way do pluck it?
  • But now, why have you broken down our walls
    so that all who pass by may steal our fruit?
  • The boar out of the forest doth waste it, and the beast of the field doth feed off it.
  • The wild boar from the forest devours it,
    and the wild animals feed on it.
  • O God of hosts, return, we beseech thee; look down from the heavens, and behold, and visit this vine;
  • Come back, we beg you, O God of Heaven’s Armies.
    Look down from heaven and see our plight.
    Take care of this grapevine
  • Even the stock which thy right hand hath planted, and the young plant thou madest strong for thyself.
  • that you yourself have planted,
    this son you have raised for yourself.
  • It is burned with fire, it is cut down; they perish at the rebuke of thy countenance.
  • For we are chopped up and burned by our enemies.
    May they perish at the sight of your frown.
  • Let thy hand be upon the man of thy right hand, upon the son of man whom thou hast made strong for thyself.
  • Strengthen the man you love,
    the son of your choice.
  • So will we not go back from thee. Revive us, and we will call upon thy name.
  • Then we will never abandon you again.
    Revive us so we can call on your name once more.
  • Restore us, O Jehovah, God of hosts; cause thy face to shine, and we shall be saved.
  • Turn us again to yourself, O LORD God of Heaven’s Armies.
    Make your face shine down upon us.
    Only then will we be saved.
