Darby Bible Translation

New Living Translation

  • Garments for the Priests

    And thou shalt take thee Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him, from among the children of Israel, that he may serve me as priest -- Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron's sons.
  • Clothing for the Priests

    “Call for your brother, Aaron, and his sons, Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. Set them apart from the rest of the people of Israel so they may minister to me and be my priests.
  • And thou shalt make holy garments for Aaron thy brother, for glory and for ornament.
  • Make sacred garments for Aaron that are glorious and beautiful.
  • And thou shalt speak with all [that are] wise-hearted, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, that they may make Aaron's garments to hallow him, that he may serve me as priest.
  • Instruct all the skilled craftsmen whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom. Have them make garments for Aaron that will distinguish him as a priest set apart for my service.
  • And these are the garments which they shall make: a breastplate, and an ephod, and a cloak, and a checkered vest, a turban, and a girdle; and they shall make holy garments for Aaron thy brother, and his sons, that he may serve me as priest.
  • These are the garments they are to make: a chestpiece, an ephod, a robe, a patterned tunic, a turban, and a sash. They are to make these sacred garments for your brother, Aaron, and his sons to wear when they serve me as priests.
  • And they shall take gold, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, and twined byssus,
  • So give them fine linen cloth, gold thread, and blue, purple, and scarlet thread.
  • The Ephod

    and shall make the ephod of gold, blue, and purple, scarlet and twined byssus, of artistic work.

  • Design of the Ephod

    “The craftsmen must make the ephod of finely woven linen and skillfully embroider it with gold and with blue, purple, and scarlet thread.
  • It shall have two shoulder-pieces joined at the two ends thereof, where it is joined together.
  • It will consist of two pieces, front and back, joined at the shoulders with two shoulder-pieces.
  • And the girdle of the ephod, which is upon it, shall be of the same, according to its work of gold, blue, and purple, and scarlet and twined byssus.
  • The decorative sash will be made of the same materials: finely woven linen embroidered with gold and with blue, purple, and scarlet thread.
  • And thou shalt take two onyx stones, and engrave on them the names of the children of Israel:
  • “Take two onyx stones, and engrave on them the names of the tribes of Israel.
  • six of their names on the one stone, and the six names of the rest on the other stone, according to their birth.
  • Six names will be on each stone, arranged in the order of the births of the original sons of Israel.
  • According to the work of an engraver in stone, as the engravings of a seal, shalt thou engrave the two stones with the names of the sons of Israel; surrounded by enclosures of gold shalt thou make them.
  • Engrave these names on the two stones in the same way a jeweler engraves a seal. Then mount the stones in settings of gold filigree.
  • And thou shalt put the two stones upon the shoulder-pieces of the ephod [as] stones of memorial for the children of Israel; and Aaron shall bear their names before Jehovah upon his two shoulders for a memorial.
  • Fasten the two stones on the shoulder-pieces of the ephod as a reminder that Aaron represents the people of Israel. Aaron will carry these names on his shoulders as a constant reminder whenever he goes before the LORD.
  • And thou shalt make enclosures of gold;
  • Make the settings of gold filigree,
  • and two chains of pure gold; of laced work shalt thou make them, of wreathen work, and fasten the wreathen chains to the enclosures.
  • then braid two cords of pure gold and attach them to the filigree settings on the shoulders of the ephod.
  • The Breastpiece

    And thou shalt make the breastplate of judgment of artistic work, like the work of the ephod thou shalt make it; of gold, blue, and purple, and scarlet, and twined byssus shalt thou make it.

  • Design of the Chestpiece

    “Then, with great skill and care, make a chestpiece to be worn for seeking a decision from God.a Make it to match the ephod, using finely woven linen embroidered with gold and with blue, purple, and scarlet thread.
  • Square shall it be, doubled; a span the length thereof, and a span the breadth thereof.
  • Make the chestpiece of a single piece of cloth folded to form a pouch nine inchesb square.
  • And thou shalt set in it settings of stones -- four rows of stones: [one] row, a sardoin, a topaz, and an emerald -- the first row;
  • Mount four rows of gemstonesc on it. The first row will contain a red carnelian, a pale-green peridot, and an emerald.
  • and the second row, a carbuncle, a sapphire, and a diamond;
  • The second row will contain a turquoise, a blue lapis lazuli, and a white moonstone.
  • and the third row, an opal, an agate, and an amethyst;
  • The third row will contain an orange jacinth, an agate, and a purple amethyst.
  • and the fourth row, a chrysolite, and an onyx, and a jasper; enclosed in gold shall they be in their settings.
  • The fourth row will contain a blue-green beryl, an onyx, and a green jasper. All these stones will be set in gold filigree.
  • And the stones shall be according to the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names, engraved as a seal: every one according to his name shall they be for the twelve tribes.
  • Each stone will represent one of the twelve sons of Israel, and the name of that tribe will be engraved on it like a seal.
  • And thou shalt make on the breastplate chains of laced work, of wreathen work, of pure gold.
  • “To attach the chestpiece to the ephod, make braided cords of pure gold thread.
  • And thou shalt make on the breastplate two rings of gold, and shalt put the two rings on the two ends of the breastplate.
  • Then make two gold rings and attach them to the top corners of the chestpiece.
  • And thou shalt put the two wreathen [cords] of gold in the two rings on the ends of the breastplate;
  • Tie the two gold cords to the two rings on the chestpiece.
  • and the two ends of the two wreathen [cords] thou shalt fasten to the two enclosures, and shalt put [them] on the shoulder-pieces of the ephod, on the front thereof.
  • Tie the other ends of the cords to the gold settings on the shoulder-pieces of the ephod.
  • And thou shalt make two rings of gold, and shalt put them on the two ends of the breastplate, on the border thereof, which faceth the ephod inwards.
  • Then make two more gold rings and attach them to the inside edges of the chestpiece next to the ephod.
  • And two rings of gold shalt thou make, and shalt put them upon the two shoulder-pieces of the ephod underneath, to the front thereof just by the coupling thereof, above the girdle of the ephod.
  • And make two more gold rings and attach them to the front of the ephod, below the shoulder-pieces, just above the knot where the decorative sash is fastened to the ephod.
  • And they shall bind the breastplate with its rings to the rings of the ephod with a lace of blue, that it may be above the girdle of the ephod, and that the breastplate be not loosed from the ephod.
  • Then attach the bottom rings of the chestpiece to the rings on the ephod with blue cords. This will hold the chestpiece securely to the ephod above the decorative sash.
  • And Aaron shall bear the names of the children of Israel in the breastplate of judgment on his heart, when he goes in to the sanctuary, for a memorial before Jehovah continually.
  • “In this way, Aaron will carry the names of the tribes of Israel on the sacred chestpieced over his heart when he goes into the Holy Place. This will be a continual reminder that he represents the people when he comes before the LORD.
  • And thou shalt put into the breastplate of judgment the Urim and the Thummim, that they may be upon Aaron's heart when he goeth in before Jehovah; and Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children of Israel upon his heart before Jehovah continually.
  • Insert the Urim and Thummim into the sacred chestpiece so they will be carried over Aaron’s heart when he goes into the LORD’s presence. In this way, Aaron will always carry over his heart the objects used to determine the LORD’s will for his people whenever he goes in before the LORD.
  • Additional Priestly Garments

    And thou shalt make the cloak of the ephod all of blue.

  • Additional Clothing for the Priests

    “Make the robe that is worn with the ephod from a single piece of blue cloth,
  • And its opening for the head shall be in the midst thereof; there shall be a binding of woven work at its opening round about; as the opening of a coat of mail, it shall be in it -- it shall not rend.
  • with an opening for Aaron’s head in the middle of it. Reinforce the opening with a woven collare so it will not tear.
  • And on the skirts thereof thou shalt make pomegranates of blue, and purple, and scarlet, round about the skirts thereof; and bells of gold between them round about:
  • Make pomegranates out of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and attach them to the hem of the robe, with gold bells between them.
  • a golden bell and a pomegranate, a golden bell and a pomegranate, in the skirts of the cloak round about.
  • The gold bells and pomegranates are to alternate all around the hem.
  • And it shall be on Aaron for service; that his sound may be heard when he goeth into the sanctuary before Jehovah, and when he cometh out, that he may not die.
  • Aaron will wear this robe whenever he ministers before the LORD, and the bells will tinkle as he goes in and out of the LORD’s presence in the Holy Place. If he wears it, he will not die.
  • And thou shalt make a thin plate of pure gold, and engrave on it, as the engravings of a seal, Holiness to Jehovah!
  • “Next make a medallion of pure gold, and engrave it like a seal with these words: Holy to the Lord.
  • And thou shalt put it on a lace of blue, and it shall be upon the turban -- upon the front of the turban shall it be.
  • Attach the medallion with a blue cord to the front of Aaron’s turban, where it must remain.
  • And it shall be upon Aaron's forehead, and Aaron shall bear the iniquity of the holy things, which the children of Israel shall hallow in all gifts of their holy things; and it shall be continually on his forehead, that they may be accepted before Jehovah.
  • Aaron must wear it on his forehead so he may take on himself any guilt of the people of Israel when they consecrate their sacred offerings. He must always wear it on his forehead so the LORD will accept the people.
  • And thou shalt weave the vest of byssus; and thou shalt make a turban of byssus; and thou shalt make a girdle of embroidery.
  • “Weave Aaron’s patterned tunic from fine linen cloth. Fashion the turban from this linen as well. Also make a sash, and decorate it with colorful embroidery.
  • And for Aaron's sons thou shalt make vests; and thou shalt make for them girdles; and high caps shalt thou make for them, for glory and for ornament.
  • “For Aaron’s sons, make tunics, sashes, and special head coverings that are glorious and beautiful.
  • And thou shalt clothe with them Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him; and shalt anoint them, and consecrate them, and hallow them, that they may serve me as priests.
  • Clothe your brother, Aaron, and his sons with these garments, and then anoint and ordain them. Consecrate them so they can serve as my priests.
  • And thou shalt make them linen trousers to cover the flesh of nakedness; from the loins even to the hips shall they reach.
  • Also make linen undergarments for them, to be worn next to their bodies, reaching from their hips to their thighs.
  • And they shall be upon Aaron and his sons when they enter into the tent of meeting, or when they come near to the altar to serve in the sanctuary; that they may not bear iniquity and die -- an everlasting statute for him and his seed after him.
  • These must be worn whenever Aaron and his sons enter the Tabernaclef or approach the altar in the Holy Place to perform their priestly duties. Then they will not incur guilt and die. This is a permanent law for Aaron and all his descendants after him.
