Pharaoh's First Refusal
And afterwards Moses and Aaron went in, and said to Pharaoh, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, Let my people go that they may celebrate a feast to me in the wilderness.

And Pharaoh said, Who is Jehovah, to whose voice I am to hearken to let Israel go? I do not know Jehovah, neither will I let Israel go.
Фараон же ответил: "Кто такой Господь? Почему я должен слушать Его? Почему я должен отпустить Израиль? Я не знаю Господа и не отпущу Израиль".
And they said, The God of the Hebrews has met with us: let us go, we pray thee, three days' journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to Jehovah our God; lest he fall upon us with pestilence or with sword.
"Бог иудейского народа говорил с нами, — сказали тогда Аарон и Моисей, — и мы просим тебя отпустить нас в пустыню на три дня пути, принести жертву Господу, Богу нашему. Если мы этого не сделаем, Он может разгневаться и погубить нас, может сделать так, что мы умрём от болезней или будем убиты в бою".
And the king of Egypt said to them, Why do ye, Moses and Aaron, wish to have the people go off from their works? Away, to your burdens!
Но фараон ответил: "Моисей и Аарон, вы отвлекаете народ от дела. Не мешайте ему работать, а сами идите и занимайтесь своим делом!
And Pharaoh said, Behold the people of the land are now many, and ye wish to make them rest from their burdens.
Работников очень много, а вы не даёте им работать!"
Bricks and Straw
And Pharaoh commanded the same day the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying,

В тот же день фараон приказал сделать работу израильского народа ещё тяжелее, сказав надсмотрщикам над рабами и иудеям-десятникам:
Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore: let them go and gather straw for themselves.
"Вы всегда давали людям солому для изготовления кирпичей; теперь же скажите им, что они должны сами находить себе солому для кирпичей.
And the number of the bricks they have made heretofore shall ye lay upon them: ye shall not diminish any of it, for they are idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us go [and] sacrifice to our God.
Количество же кирпичей, которые они должны изготовить, остаётся прежним. Они обленились, потому и просят меня, чтобы я их отпустил. У них недостаточно работы, поэтому они и просят меня, чтобы я разрешил им принести жертвы их Богу.
Let them put heavier labour on the men, that they may be taken up with it, and not regard vain words.
Так заставьте же их работать ещё больше, чтобы они были всё время заняты, тогда у них не будет времени слушать выдумки Моисея".
And the taskmasters of the people and their officers went out and spoke to the people, saying, Thus says Pharaoh: I will not give you straw:
И вот египтяне-надзиратели и иудеи-десятники пошли и сказали народу: "Фараон решил, что не будет больше давать вам солому для изготовления кирпичей,
go ye, get yourselves straw where ye may find it; but none of your work shall be diminished.
вы сами должны пойти и найти солому, а кирпичей вы должны изготовлять столько же, сколько и раньше".
And the people were scattered abroad throughout the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw.
И пошли сыны Израиля по всему Египту искать солому,
And the taskmasters urged [them], saying, Fulfil your labours, the daily work, as when there was straw.
а надзиратели заставляли их работать ещё тяжелее и изготовлять столько же кирпичей, сколько и раньше.
And the officers of the children of Israel, whom Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, [and] it was said, Why have ye not fulfilled your task in making brick, both yesterday and to-day, as heretofore?
Египтяне-надзиратели выбрали десятников из иудеев, поставили их ответственными за работу и били их, говоря: "Почему вы не изготовляете столько же кирпичей, сколько раньше? Если вы могли делать это раньше, то и теперь можете!"
The Israelites' Cry
Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried to Pharaoh, saying, Why dost thou deal thus with thy bondmen?

There is no straw given to thy bondmen, and they say to us, Make brick; and behold, thy bondmen are beaten, but it is the fault of thy people.
Солому нам не даёшь, требуешь, чтобы мы изготовляли столько же кирпичей, сколько и раньше, а теперь ещё и надзиратели избивают нас. Твоему народу грешно так поступать".
And he said, Ye are idle, idle! therefore ye say, Let us go and sacrifice to Jehovah.
Фараон же ответил: "Вы обленились, не хотите работать, потому и просите отпустить вас, потому и хотите уйти отсюда и принести жертвы Господу.
And now go -- work! and straw shall not be given you, and ye shall deliver the measure of bricks.
Идите, работайте! Не дадим вам никакой соломы, вы же должны давать столько же кирпичей, сколько и раньше".
And the officers of the children of Israel saw [that] it stood ill with them, because it was said, Ye shall not diminish anything from your bricks, the daily work.
Иудеи-десятники поняли, что попали в беду, так как знали, что не смогут изготовлять столько кирпичей, сколько раньше.
And they met Moses and Aaron, who stood there to meet them, as they came out from Pharaoh.
Выйдя от фараона, они прошли мимо дожидавшихся их Моисея и Аарона.
And they said to them, Jehovah look upon you and judge, that ye have made our odour to stink in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his bondmen, putting a sword into their hand to kill us!
"Зря вы сказали фараону, чтобы он отпустил нас, — сказали они Моисею и Арону. — Пусть Господь вас накажет за то, что вы сделали нас ненавистными фараону и его правителям. Вы дали им повод убить нас".
And Moses returned to Jehovah, and said, Lord, why hast thou done evil to this people? why now hast thou sent me?
Моисей молился Господу, говоря: "Господи, для чего Ты подверг такому бедствию Свой народ? Для чего послал меня сюда?
