  • A Wise Son Heeds his Father's Instruction

    A wise son [heareth] his father's instruction; but a scorner heareth not rebuke.
  • A wise child accepts a parent’s discipline;a
    a mocker refuses to listen to correction.
  • A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth; but the soul of the treacherous, violence.
  • Wise words will win you a good meal,
    but treacherous people have an appetite for violence.
  • He that guardeth his mouth keepeth his soul; destruction shall be to him that openeth wide his lips.
  • Those who control their tongue will have a long life;
    opening your mouth can ruin everything.
  • A sluggard's soul desireth and hath nothing; but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.
  • Lazy people want much but get little,
    but those who work hard will prosper.
  • A righteous [man] hateth lying; but the wicked maketh himself odious and cometh to shame.
  • The godly hate lies;
    the wicked cause shame and disgrace.
  • Righteousness preserveth him that is perfect in the way; but wickedness overthroweth the sinner.
  • Godliness guards the path of the blameless,
    but the evil are misled by sin.
  • There is that feigneth himself rich, and hath nothing; there is that maketh himself poor, and hath great wealth.
  • Some who are poor pretend to be rich;
    others who are rich pretend to be poor.
  • The ransom of a man's life is his riches; but the indigent heareth not rebuke.
  • The rich can pay a ransom for their lives,
    but the poor won’t even get threatened.
  • The light of the righteous rejoiceth; but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.
  • The life of the godly is full of light and joy,
    but the light of the wicked will be snuffed out.
  • By pride there only cometh contention; but with the well-advised is wisdom.
  • Pride leads to conflict;
    those who take advice are wise.
  • Wealth [gotten] by vanity diminisheth; but he that gathereth by manual-labour shall increase [it].
  • Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears;
    wealth from hard work grows over time.
  • Hope deferred maketh the heart sick; but the desire [that] cometh to pass is a tree of life.
  • Hope deferred makes the heart sick,
    but a dream fulfilled is a tree of life.
  • Whoso despiseth the word shall be held by it; but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.
  • People who despise advice are asking for trouble;
    those who respect a command will succeed.
  • The teaching of the wise [man] is a fountain of life, to turn away from the snares of death.
  • The instruction of the wise is like a life-giving fountain;
    those who accept it avoid the snares of death.
  • Good understanding procureth favour; but the way of the treacherous is hard.
  • A person with good sense is respected;
    a treacherous person is headed for destruction.b
  • Every prudent [man] acteth with knowledge; but the foolish layeth open [his] folly.
  • Wise people think before they act;
    fools don’t — and even brag about their foolishness.
  • A wicked messenger falleth into evil; but a faithful ambassador is health.
  • An unreliable messenger stumbles into trouble,
    but a reliable messenger brings healing.
  • Poverty and shame shall be [to] him that refuseth instruction; but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured.
  • If you ignore criticism, you will end in poverty and disgrace;
    if you accept correction, you will be honored.
  • The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul; but it is abomination to the foolish to depart from evil.
  • It is pleasant to see dreams come true,
    but fools refuse to turn from evil to attain them.
  • He that walketh with wise [men] becometh wise; but a companion of the foolish will be depraved.
  • Walk with the wise and become wise;
    associate with fools and get in trouble.
  • Evil pursueth sinners; but to the righteous good shall be repaid.
  • Trouble chases sinners,
    while blessings reward the righteous.
  • A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children; but the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the righteous [man].
  • Good people leave an inheritance to their grandchildren,
    but the sinner’s wealth passes to the godly.
  • Much food is in the tillage of the poor; but there is that is lost for want of judgment.
  • A poor person’s farm may produce much food,
    but injustice sweeps it all away.
  • He that spareth his rod hateth his son; but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.
  • Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children.
    Those who love their children care enough to discipline them.
  • The righteous eateth to the satisfying of his soul; but the belly of the wicked shall want.
  • The godly eat to their hearts’ content,
    but the belly of the wicked goes hungry.
