The Benefits of Wisdom

My son, if thou receivest my words, and layest up my commandments with thee,

1

Мій сину! коли приймеш слова мої й заповідї мої ховати меш у себе,

2

so that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom [and] thou apply thy heart to understanding;

2

Коли слух твій вчиниш уважним на мудрість, і наклониш своє серце до роздумовання;

3

yea, if thou criest after discernment [and] liftest up thy voice to understanding;

3

Коли ти знаннє звати меш до себе й покликувати за розумом;

4

if thou seekest her as silver and searchest for her as for hidden treasures:

4

Коли будеш шукати його, так як срібла, й докопуватись його, як скарбу, —

5

then shalt thou understand the fear of Jehovah, and find the knowledge of God.

5

Тодї зрозумієш страх Господень і знайдеш пізнаннє Бога.

6

For Jehovah giveth wisdom; out of his mouth [come] knowledge and understanding.

6

Бо тільки Господь дає премудрість і з його уст виходить знаннє й розум.

7

He layeth up sound wisdom for the upright; [he] is a shield to them that walk in integrity;

7

Він праведним приховує спасеннє, він заслоняє тих, що ходять в невинностї;

8

guarding the paths of just judgment and keeping the way of his godly ones.

8

Він стежки правди наглядає й береже дороги сьвятих своїх.

9

Then shalt thou understand righteousness and judgment and equity: every good path.

9

Тодї ти спізнаєш правду й правосуд і всяку путь праву та добру.

10

When wisdom entereth into thy heart and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul,

10

Коли премудрість ввійде в серце тобі, а знаннє над усе душі твоїй любійше буде,

11

discretion shall keep thee, understanding shall preserve thee:

11

Тодї обачність оберегати ме тебе, й розум буде на сторожі у тебе,

12

To deliver thee from the way of evil, from the man that speaketh froward things;

12

Щоб від стежок тебе ледачих урятувати, й від чоловіка кривоязикого,

13

[from those] who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness;

13

Від тих, що праві шляхи покинули й путьми у темряві блукають;

14

who rejoice to do evil, [and] delight in the frowardness of evil;

14

Від тих, що радїють злу й ледарством веселяться,

15

whose paths are crooked, and who are perverted in their course:

15

Що шляхи їх криві та що блукають по стежках своїх;

16

To deliver thee from the strange woman, from the stranger who flattereth with her words;

16

Та щоб урятувати тебе від жони чужої, від жони другого, що солодко промовляє,

17

who forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God;

17

Що друга юностї своєї понехала й Божий заповіт забула.

18

-- for her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead;

18

Дім її веде до смертї, а стежки її до мерцїв у пеклї;

19

none that go unto her return again, neither do they attain to the paths of life:

19

Нїхто, хто завернув до такої, не вертається вже й не ступить на жизняну дорогу.

20

that thou mayest walk in the way of the good, And keep the paths of the righteous.

20

Оце ж ступай дорогою добрих і держись стежок, якими праведні ходять.

21

For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it;

21

Бо тілько праведні наслїдять займанщину, й вікувати муть на нїй вік чисті серцем;

22

but the wicked shall be cut off from the land, and the unfaithful shall be plucked up out of it.

22

Ледачі же витрачені будуть із землї, і зрадники будуть викоренені з неї.
