The Benefits of Wisdom

My son, if thou receivest my words, and layest up my commandments with thee,

Сину! Якщо, прийнявши слова моєї заповіді, ти збережеш їх у собі,

so that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom [and] thou apply thy heart to understanding;

а твоє вухо прислухатиметься до мудрості, якщо прихилиш серце своє, аби розуміти, прихилиш його, аби повчати свого сина,

yea, if thou criest after discernment [and] liftest up thy voice to understanding;

якщо закличеш мудрість і звернеш свій голос до розуму, — шукатимеш знання гучним голосом,

4

if thou seekest her as silver and searchest for her as for hidden treasures:

4

якщо шукатимеш її як срібло, і дошукуватимешся її, неначе скарб,

5

then shalt thou understand the fear of Jehovah, and find the knowledge of God.

5

тоді збагнеш, що таке Господній страх, і знайдеш пізнання Бога.

6

For Jehovah giveth wisdom; out of his mouth [come] knowledge and understanding.

Адже Господь дає мудрість, і від обличчя Його — знання та розуміння.

7

He layeth up sound wisdom for the upright; [he] is a shield to them that walk in integrity;

7

І Він, як скарб, береже спасіння для праведних, охороняє їхню ходу,

8

guarding the paths of just judgment and keeping the way of his godly ones.

щоби боронити дороги правди, захищати шляхи тих, хто вшановує Його.

9

Then shalt thou understand righteousness and judgment and equity: every good path.

9

Тоді ти збагнеш, що таке правда і суд, і випрямиш усе, що обертається навкруги добра.

10

When wisdom entereth into thy heart and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul,

10

Коли навідається мудрість до твого розуму, і знання стане приємним для твоєї душі,

11

discretion shall keep thee, understanding shall preserve thee:

11

тоді добра рада оберігатиме тебе, а освячений розум захищатиме тебе,

12

To deliver thee from the way of evil, from the man that speaketh froward things;

12

аби врятувати тебе від дороги зла та від людини неправдомовної.

13

[from those] who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness;

13

О, ви, котрі звертаєте з доріг праведності, щоб іти дорогами темряви,

14

who rejoice to do evil, [and] delight in the frowardness of evil;

14

які радієте злом і захоплюєтеся спотвореним і ганебним,

15

whose paths are crooked, and who are perverted in their course:

15

стежки яких покручені, а їхні колеса погнуті!

16

To deliver thee from the strange woman, from the stranger who flattereth with her words;

16

Це — аби віддалити тебе від дороги праведності, відчужити від правдивого знання!

17

who forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God;

17

Сину! Хай тобою не опанує погана порада, яка відійшла від науки молодості, яка забула Божий завіт.

18

-- for her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead;

18

Вона поставила свій дім поряд зі смертю, а із синами землі — свої осі, поряд з адом.

19

none that go unto her return again, neither do they attain to the paths of life:

19

Усі, хто ходить за нею, не повернуться, — вони не підуть стежкою праведності й не осягнуть років життя.

20

that thou mayest walk in the way of the good, And keep the paths of the righteous.

20

Коли б ходили добрими стежками, то знайшли б вимощені алеї правди.

21

For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it;

21

Добрі будуть жителями землі, невинні залишаться на ній, бо щирі мешкатимуть на землі, і праведні залишаться на ній.

22

but the wicked shall be cut off from the land, and the unfaithful shall be plucked up out of it.

22

Дороги ж безбожних зникнуть із землі, беззаконні будуть вигнані з неї.
