Consider Diligently what is Before You
When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider well who is before thee;

Коли засядеш їсти з князем укупі, то вважай добре, як стоїть перед тобою страва;
and put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.
Вложи собі хоч би ножа в горло, коли ти надто ласий.
Be not desirous of his dainties; for they are deceitful food.
На ласощі його не надься: се оманлива страва.
Weary not thyself to become rich; cease from thine own intelligence:
В достатки не силкуйсь великі вбиватись; залиши такі гадки твої.
wilt thou set thine eyes upon it, it is gone; for indeed it maketh itself wings and it flieth away as an eagle towards the heavens.
Подивишся на них, а їх уже й немає; багацтво бо собі, мов крила, поробить, та, немов орел, ід небу полине.
Eat thou not the food of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainties.
Не їж страви у скупаря зависного й не надься на ласощі його;
For as he thinketh in his soul, so is he. Eat and drink! will he say unto thee; but his heart is not with thee.
Бо які нещирі мисли в його, такий і він: "Іж і пий!" — припрошує він, а серце його не при тобі.
Thy morsel which thou hast eaten must thou vomit up, and thou wilt have wasted thy sweet words.
Шматок, що з'їв, рад будеш вернути, й добрі слова твої ти надармо втратиш.
Speak not in the ears of a foolish [man], for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.
При дурневі не говори, він бо знехтує розумні речі твої.
Remove not the ancient landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:
Давньої межі не пересувай й не вривайся в сирітське поле,
for their redeemer is mighty; he will plead their cause against thee.
Заступник бо в них сильний; він вмішається в справу їх проти тебе.
Apply thy heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.
Прихили серце твоє до науки, й уши твої — до слів розумних.
Withhold not correction from the child; for [if] thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die:
Некараним твого хлопця не лишай; як укараєш його лозиною — він не вмре;
thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from Sheol.
Ти покараєш його лозиною й врятуєш душу його од преисподньої.
My son, if thy heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine;
Мій сину! коли серце в тебе буде мудре, то й моє серце буде радїти;
and my reins shall exult, when thy lips speak right things.
Ба й все внутро моє буде веселитись, коли уста твої говорити муть право.
Let not thy heart envy sinners, but [be thou] in the fear of Jehovah all the day;
Не завидуй в серцї ледачим; нехай по всяк день перебуває воно в страсї Господнїм;
for surely there is a result, and thine expectation shall not be cut off.
Бо є будущина, й надїя твоя не буде марна.
Thou, my son, hear and be wise, and direct thy heart in the way.
Слухай, сину мій, і будь мудрим, та справляй серце твоє на дорогу праву.
Be not among winebibbers, among riotous eaters of flesh.
Не бувай між тими, що впиваються вином, анї між тими, що переїдаються мясивом, —
For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty; and drowsiness clotheth with rags.
Пяницї бо й немірні з'убожіють, а довге їх спаннє вбере їх у лахи.
Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
Слухняним батьку будь, що від него родився, не нехтуй неньки, хоч вона буде вже й старенька.
Buy the truth, and sell it not; wisdom, and instruction, and intelligence.
Купуй правду, й не збувай мудростї, науки й розуму нї за які достатки.
The father of a righteous [man] shall greatly rejoice, and he that begetteth a wise [son] shall have joy of him:
Отець праведного веселиться, і хто мудрого вродив, радується ним.
let thy father and thy mother have joy, and let her that bore thee rejoice.
Нехай же радїє й твій отець, і ненька, що тебе зродила, нехай веселиться.
My son, give me thy heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.
Оддай менї твоє, мій сину, серце, а путь мою нехай твої стережуть очі.
For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.
Блудниця — се глибока пропасть; тїсний колодїзь — чужая жінка;
She also lieth in wait as a robber, and increaseth the treacherous among men.
Мов харцизяка, вона засїдає, й намножує між людьми переступників.
Who hath woe? Who hath sorrow? Who contentions? Who complaining? Who wounds without cause? Who redness of eyes?
У кого зойки? у кого стогін? у кого сварка? у кого горе? хто ранить без причини? в кого червоні очі?
-- They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to try mixed wine.
У тих, що при винї седять довго, у тих, що в напитках дошукуються аж гущі-приправи.
Look not upon the wine when it is red, when it sparkleth in the cup, and goeth down smoothly:
Не призирайся вину, як у кубку грає, як гарно сьвітиться й легко осїдає!
at the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
Опісля воно укусить, як гадюка, мов гаспид-василиск, отрути впустить.
Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thy heart shall speak froward things;
Очима будеш ти на жен чужих дивитись, і серце в тебе розворотне промовить,
and thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, and as he that lieth down upon the top of a mast:
І будеш ти, як той, що дремле серед моря, мов той, що в горі спить на щоглї;
