Avoid Immorality

My son, attend unto my wisdom, incline thine ear to my understanding;

1

Мій сину! слухай уважно мудрости моєї,
прихили ухо твоє до розуму мого:

2

that thou mayest keep reflection, and that thy lips may preserve knowledge.

щоб ти зберіг собі розсудок,
і щоб наука уста твої зберегла.

3

For the lips of the strange woman drop honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil;

3

Бо мед із уст чужої жінки капає,
і бесіда її масніша від олії,

4

but her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword.

4

але скін її гіркий, немов полин,
і гострий, наче меч двосічний.

5

Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on Sheol.

5

Ноги її низходять до смерти,
кроки її простують до Шеолу.

6

Lest she should ponder the path of life, her ways wander, she knoweth not [whither].

Стежки життя вона не знає;
хода її непевна, їй до того байдуже.

7

And now, children, hearken unto me, and depart not from the words of my mouth.

Отож, сину мій, слухай мене,
не відступай від слова уст моїх.

8

Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house:

Відсторони твою дорогу геть від неї,
не наближайсь до дверей її дому,

9

lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel;

9

щоб не довелось віддати іншим твою славу,
а твоїх літ — людям немилосердним;

10

lest strangers be filled with thy wealth, and the fruits of thy toil [come] into the house of a stranger;

10

щоб не наживалися твоїм добром чужинці,
щоб труди твої не переходили в чужий дім,

11

and thou mourn in thine end, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed;

11

щоб не стогнав ти по тому,
як тіло твоє і твоя плоть змарніють,

12

and thou say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof!

щоб не казав: “Чом же я науку ненавидів,
серце моє погордувало докором?

13

and I have not hearkened unto the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to those that instructed me;

Я голосу вчителів моїх не слухав,
і до наставників моїх не нахиляв я вуха.

14

I was well nigh in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly.

14

Я мало не потрапив у крайнє лихо
поміж зборищем-громадою!”

15

Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well.

15

Пий воду з твого водозбору,
воду, що б'є із власної криниці.

16

Thy fountains shall be poured forth, as water-brooks in the broadways.

16

Чому б твої джерела мали розливатися навколо,
твої потоки по майданах?

17

Let them be only thine own, and not strangers' with thee.

17

Нехай будуть тобі одному,
а не чужим разом з тобою.

18

Let thy fountain be blessed; and have joy of the wife of thy youth.

18

Нехай живець твій буде благословенний,
втішайся дружиною твоєї юности.

19

As a lovely hind and a graceful roe, let her breasts satisfy thee at all times: be thou ravished continually with her love.

Премила лань! Люба сарна!
Нехай її чари упоюють тебе повсякчас,
у любощах її стало кохайся!

20

And why shouldest thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger?

20

Для чого тобі, сину, захоплюватися чужою,
до грудей сторонньої горнутись?

21

For the ways of man are before the eyes of Jehovah, and he pondereth all his paths.

21

Дороги людські в Господа перед очима,
і він вирівнює всі стежки їхні.

22

His own iniquities shall take the wicked, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sin.

22

Злого ловлять власні переступи,
у пута власного гріха він потрапляє.

23

He shall die for want of discipline; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

23

Він помирає з-за браку науки,
з-за своєї надмірної глупоти він блукає.
