My son, attend unto my wisdom, incline thine ear to my understanding;
My son, attend unto my wisdom, incline thine ear to my understanding;
Сину! Прислухайся до моєї мудрості, скеруй своє вухо до моїх слів,
that thou mayest keep reflection, and that thy lips may preserve knowledge.
щоби зберегти світлий розум. Адже знання моїх уст я заповідаю тобі.
For the lips of the strange woman drop honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil;
Не прислухайся до поганої жінки. Адже з губ розпусної жінки капає мед, вона на деякий час змащує твоє горло,
but her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword.
однак пізніше відчуєш, що воно гіркіше від жовчі й гостріше за двосічний меч.
Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on Sheol.
Безумні ноги тих, хто має з нею справу, ведуть зі смертю до аду, — її стопи не мають опори.
Lest she should ponder the path of life, her ways wander, she knoweth not [whither].
Дорогами життя вона не ходить, а її стежки ковзкі, важко зрозумілі.
And now, children, hearken unto me, and depart not from the words of my mouth.
Тож тепер, сину, послухай мене — не знехтуй моїми словами.
Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house:
Нехай твоя дорога проходить далеко від неї, не наближайся до дверей її дому, —
lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel;
щоб часом вона не передала іншим твоє життя, твоє проживання, в руки немилосердних;
lest strangers be filled with thy wealth, and the fruits of thy toil [come] into the house of a stranger;
щоб чужі не наповнилися твоєю силою, а твоя праця не пішла до чужих домів.
and thou mourn in thine end, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed;
Адже врешті-решт будеш каятися, коли вже члени твого тіла будуть виснажені,
and thou say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof!
і ти говоритимеш: Чому ж я знехтував повчанням? Чому моє серце відкинуло докори?
and I have not hearkened unto the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to those that instructed me;
Я не послухався голосу того, хто мене картав і мене повчав; я до того не прихиляв свого вуха.
I was well nigh in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly.
Посеред збору й громади я ледь-ледь не погруз у всяке зло!
Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well.
Пий же воду з власних посудин, — зі своїх криниць та джерел.
Thy fountains shall be poured forth, as water-brooks in the broadways.
Хай у тебе не розливаються води з твого джерела, хай течуть твої води через твої площі.
Let them be only thine own, and not strangers' with thee.
Хай будуть вони лише твоїм володінням, і ніхто чужий хай не має частки з тобою.
Let thy fountain be blessed; and have joy of the wife of thy youth.
Джерело твоєї води нехай буде твоїм власним, — веселися з жінкою своєї молодості.
As a lovely hind and a graceful roe, let her breasts satisfy thee at all times: be thou ravished continually with her love.
Лань кохання і жереб’я твоєї ласки нехай гомонить з тобою; обраниця твоя нехай веде тебе і нехай перебуває з тобою повсякчас; огорнений її любов’ю, ти будеш щасливим.
And why shouldest thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger?
Не будь відкритий для чужої, не дозволяй рукам не твоєї обнімати себе.
For the ways of man are before the eyes of Jehovah, and he pondereth all his paths.
Адже дороги людини — перед Божими очима, — Він стежить за всіма її стежками.
His own iniquities shall take the wicked, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sin.
Беззаконня заарканює людину, — кожен в’яжеться путами власних гріхів.
