Warnings against Foolishness
My son, if thou hast become surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand for a stranger,

Мій сину! коли ти за ближнього твого поручився й дав руку твою за другого, —
thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.
То ти звязав себе словами з власних уст твоїх, обіцянкою сам собі сїло накинув.
Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, since thou hast come into the hand of thy friend: go, humble thyself, and be urgent with thy friend.
Вчини ж, мій сину, ось що, щоб звільнити себе, — бо ти попався в руки ближньому твому: йди, впади йому, твойму ближньому, в ноги;
Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids:
Не дай твоїм очам нї сну, анї задрімати — війкам твоїм;
deliver thyself as a gazelle from the hand [of the hunter], and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
Рятуй себе, як серна, з руки, як пташка з рук птахоловця.
Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways and be wise:
Йди, лїнивий, до мурашки, приглянься її дїланню, й навчись розуму.
provideth her bread in the summer, [and] gathereth her food in the harvest.
А лїтом готує вона хлїб собі, збірає в жнива корм свій.
How long, sluggard, wilt thou lie down? When wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?
Докіль спати меш, лїнивче? коли ти встанеш зо сну твого?
A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest!
Не довго поспиш, не довго дрімати меш, не довго полежиш, згорнувши руки;
So shall thy poverty come as a roving plunderer, and thy penury as an armed man.
А прийде, як волоцюга, біднота на тебе, й недоля твоя, мов той сїпака.
A man of Belial, a wicked person, is he that goeth about with a perverse mouth;
Чоловік лукавий, чоловік безбожний ходить із льживими устами;
he winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers;
Моргає він очима, потирає ногами, дає знаки палцями своїми;
deceits are in his heart; he deviseth mischief at all times, he soweth discords.
У серцї ж у його омана; він придумує лихо по всяк час, розсїває незгоду.
Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly: in a moment shall he be broken, and without remedy.
За се нагло прийде погибель на него, буде, як стій, розбитий — без рятунку.
These six [things] doth Jehovah hate, yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
От шестеро речей, ненавидних у Бога, ба семеро, гидких душі його:
haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood;
Се очі горді, язик, що лжу сплїтає, руки, що кров безвинну проливають,
a heart that deviseth wicked imaginations; feet that are swift in running to mischief;
Серце, що кує лихі задуми, ноги, що біжять сквапно до злого,
a false witness that uttereth lies, and he that soweth discords among brethren.
Се сьвідок, що ясить-видумує неправду, та незгоду між братами розсїває.
Warnings against Adultery
My son, observe thy father's commandment, and forsake not the teaching of thy mother;

Храни, мій сину, що твій батько заповідає, й материної науки не цурайся;
bind them continually upon thy heart, tie them about thy neck:
На серцї їх собі по всї часи навяжи, повісь собі їх на шиї.
when thou walkest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and [when] thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.
Як ходиш ти, нехай дорогу тобі вказують; як ти лежиш і спиш, нехай тебе чатують:
For the commandment is a lamp, and the teaching a light, and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
Бо заповідь — се твій сьвітильник, навчаннє — се сьвітло, дорога ж до жизнї — се докір і наука;
to keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.
Щоб остерігати тебе од ледачої женщини, від підлестного язика чужої.
Lust not after her beauty in thy heart, neither let her take thee with her eyelids;
Не пожадай вроди її в серцї твойму, й не давай себе принадити морганнєм її;
for by means of a whorish woman [a man is brought] to a loaf of bread, and another's wife doth hunt for the precious soul.
Бо задля блудницї убожіють до кусня хлїба, а мужняя жена вловляє дорогу душу.
Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his garments not be burned?
Чи жару ж набереш у пазуху, й не прогорить платтє твоє?
Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be scorched?
Чи пійдеш по жару, не спікши ніг собі?
So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife: whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent.
Таке жде кожного, хто входить до жінки ближнього свого: хто дотикнеться її, не буде без вини.
They do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry:
Про злодїя нїхто байдужен не буває, хоч би він крав голодний, щоб попоїсти;
and if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.
А вже як спіймається, то заплатить у семеро все; що має він в домівцї, все втеряє.
Whoso committeth adultery with a woman is void of understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
Хто ж перелюбствує з жінкою чужою, ума в його нема; той губить душу свою, хто се чинить.
A wound and contempt shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.
Побоїв і сорому набереться він, і безчесть його не зотреся.
For jealousy is the rage of a man, and he will not spare in the day of vengeance;
Бо ревнованнє й лютість мужа не пощадить в день пімсти;
