Warnings about the Adulteress

My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee.

1

Сину мій, бережи ти слова́ мої, мої ж заповіді заховай при собі,

2

Keep my commandments, and live; and my teaching, as the apple of thine eye.

2

бережи мої заповіді — та й живи, а наука моя — немов в о́чах твоїх та зіни́ця,

3

Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the tablet of thy heart.

3

прив'яжи їх на па́льцях своїх, напиши на табли́ці тій серця свого!

4

Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister, and call intelligence [thy] kinswoman:

4

На мудрість скажи: „Ти сестра моя!“ а розум назви: „Мій дові́рений!“

5

that they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger who flattereth with her words.

5

щоб тебе стерегти́ від блудни́ці, від чужи́нки, що мовить м'яке́нькі слова́.

6

For at the window of my house, I looked forth through my lattice,

Бо я визира́в був в вікно свого дому, через ґрати мого вікна́,

7

and I beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the sons, a young man void of understanding,

і приглядавсь до неві́ж, розглядався між мо́лоддю. І юна́к ось, позба́влений розуму,

8

passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house,

прохо́див по ринку при розі його, і ступив по дорозі до дому її,

9

in the twilight, in the evening of the day, in the blackness of night and the darkness.

коли вітере́ць повівав був увечорі дня, у те́мряві ночі та мо́року.

10

And behold, there met him a woman in the attire of a harlot, and subtle of heart.

Аж ось жінка в убра́нні блудни́ці назу́стріч йому́, із серцем підсту́пним,

11

She is clamorous and unmanageable; her feet abide not in her house:

11

галасли́ва та непогамо́вана, її но́ги у домі своїм не бувають:

12

now without, now in the broadways, -- and she lieth in wait at every corner.

раз на вулиці, раз на майда́нах, і при кожному ро́зі чату́є вона.

13

And she caught him and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him,

13

І вхопи́ла вона його міцно та й поцілувала його, безсоро́мним зробила обличчя своє та й сказала йому:

14

I have peace-offerings with me; this day have I paid my vows:

14

„У мене тепер мирні жертви, — ви́повнила я сьогодні обі́ти свої!

15

therefore came I forth to meet thee, to seek earnestly thy face, and I have found thee.

15

Тому́ то я вийшла назу́стріч тобі, пошукати обличчя твого́, — і знайшла я тебе!

16

I have decked my bed with tapestry coverlets of variegated linen from Egypt;

Килима́ми я ви́стелила своє ло́же, — ткани́нами різних кольо́рів з єгипетського полотна́,

17

I have perfumed my couch with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.

17

посте́лю свою я поси́пала ми́ррою, ало́єм та цинамо́ном.

18

Come, let us revel in love until the morning, let us delight ourselves with loves.

18

Ходи ж, аж до ра́нку впива́тися будем коха́нням, любов'ю наті́шимось ми!

19

For the husband is not at home, he is gone a long journey;

19

Бо вдома нема чоловіка, — пішов у далеку дорогу:

20

he hath taken the money-bag with him, he will come home on the day of the full moon.

20

вузлик срібла́ він узяв в свою руку, — хіба́ на день по́вні пове́рне до дому свого“.

21

With her much enticement she beguiled him; with the smoothness of her lips she constrained him.

21

Прихили́ла його велемо́вством своїм, обле́сливістю своїх губ його зва́била, —

22

He went after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, and as stocks [serve] for the correction of the fool;

22

він ра́птом за нею пішов, немов віл, до зарі́зу прова́джений, і немов пес, що ведуть його на ланцюгу́ до ув'я́знення,

23

till an arrow strike through his liver: as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for its life.

23

як той птах, поспішає до сі́тки, і не знає, що це на життя його па́стка...

24

And now, ye sons, hearken unto me, and attend to the words of my mouth.

24

А тепер, мої діти, мене ви послу́хайте, і на слова́ моїх уст уважа́йте:

25

Let not thy heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths:

25

Хай не збо́чує серце твоє на дороги її, не блукай ти стежка́ми її,

26

for she hath cast down many wounded, and all slain by her were strong.

26

бо вона багатьох уже тру́пами ки́нула, і числе́нні всі, нею заби́ті!

27

Her house is the way to Sheol, going down to the chambers of death.

27

Її дім — до шео́лу доро́ги, що провадять до смертних кімна́т.
