Death Comes to Good and Bad

For all this I laid to my heart and [indeed] to investigate all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God; man knoweth neither love nor hatred: all is before them.

Об этом сосредоточенно я думал. Я видел, что Бог определяет то, что случается с добрыми и мудрыми людьми, со всеми их делами. Людям неизвестно, любимы они будут или ненавистны, и не знают они, что их в будущем ждёт.

All things [come] alike to all: one event to the righteous and to the wicked, to the good, and to the clean, and to the unclean, to him that sacrificeth and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.

Но есть то, что для всех неизбежно, — мы все умираем. Смерть приходит и к добрым и к злым людям, к чистым и нечистым, к тем, кто приносит жертвы, и кто этого не делает. Добрый человек умрёт, как и грешник, и тот, кто даёт клятву Богу, умрёт так же, как и тот, кто боится клятв.

This is an evil among all that is done under the sun, that one thing befalleth all: yea, also the heart of the children of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live; and after that, [they have to go] to the dead.

Худшее, что случается на земле, — это то, что у всех одна участь. Но плохо и то, что у людей всегда есть злые и глупые мысли, которые ведут их к смерти.

For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope; for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

У каждого, кто жив, есть надежда. И эти слова правдивы: живая собака лучше мёртвого льва.

For the living know that they shall die; but the dead know not anything, neither have they any more a reward, for the memory of them is forgotten.

Живые знают, что они умрут, но мёртвые не знают ничего, для мёртвых больше нет вознаграждения. Люди их скоро забудут.

Their love also, and their hatred, and their envy is already perished; neither have they any more for ever a portion in all that is done under the sun.

Когда человек умирает, любовь, ненависть и ревность — всё проходит, и мёртвые вновь никогда не разделят того, что случается на земле.

Enjoy Your Portion in This Life

Go, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God hath already accepted thy works.

Поэтому иди и ешь сейчас хлеб свой с радостью, пей вино своё и будь счастлив, Бог против этого ничего не имеет.

Let thy garments be always white, and let not thy head lack oil.

Носи хорошие одежды и старайся выглядеть хорошо.

Enjoy life with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity; for that is thy portion in life, and in thy labour wherein thou art labouring under the sun.

Радуйся жизни с женою, которую любишь, радуйся каждому дню недолгой жизни своей, Бог тебе дал эту жизнь на земле, — это всё, что есть у тебя, поэтому будь рад работе, которую ты должен делать в этой жизни.

Whatever thy hand findeth to do, do with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Sheol, whither thou goest.

Каждый раз, находя для себя работу, делай её как можно лучше, в могиле нет работы, нет никаких планов, ни знаний, ни мудрости. Все мы уйдём в места смерти.

I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to the intelligent, nor yet favour to men of knowledge; but time and chance happeneth to them all.

И другие несправедливости этой жизни я видел: не всегда выигрывает бег лучший бегун, не всегда побеждает в битве сильнейшая армия, не всегда достаётся мудрым заработанный ими хлеб, не всегда получает богатство умнейший и образованный, человек не всегда получает заслуженную похвалу. Приходит время, и с каждым случается плохое.

For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are taken with the snare, like them are the children of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them.

Человек никогда не знает, что с ним случится вскоре. Он подобен рыбе, пойманной сетью, она не знала, что это случится. Он подобен птице, попавшей в силки, она не знала, что это случится. Так же неожиданно случается плохое и с человеком.

Wisdom Better than Strength

This also have I seen as wisdom under the sun, and it was great unto me.

Но видел я и человека, поступающего в жизни мудро, и это мне показалось важным.

There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and encompassed it, and built great bulwarks against it:

Великий царь воевал против маленького города с немногочисленными жителями и осадил его со своими войсками.

15

and there was found in it a poor wise man, who by his wisdom delivered the city; but no man remembered that poor man.

Но в том городе был мудрый человек, который был беден, но мудростью своею спас город. Позже люди забыли об этом бедном человеке.

16

Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength; but the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.

Но всё же я говорю, что мудрость лучше, чем сила. Люди забыли о мудрости того бедняка и перестали слушать его. Но я до сих пор верю, что мудрость лучше.

17

The words of the wise are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.

17

Намного лучше крика правителя глупцов слова, спокойно сказанные мудрым.

18

Wisdom is better than weapons of war; but one sinner destroyeth much good.

18

Мудрость лучше меча и копья на войне. Но погубить способен много хорошего один глупец.
