Darby Bible Translation

New Living Translation

  • Woe to Tyrants

Woe unto them that decree iniquitous decrees, and to the writers that prescribe oppression,
  • What sorrow awaits the unjust judges
and those who issue unfair laws.
  • to turn away the poor from judgment, and to take away the right from the afflicted of my people; that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless!
  • They deprive the poor of justice
and deny the rights of the needy among my people.
    They prey on widows
    and take advantage of orphans.
  • And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the sudden destruction [which] shall come from far? To whom will ye flee for help, and where will ye leave your glory?
  • What will you do when I punish you,
when I send disaster upon you from a distant land?
To whom will you turn for help?
Where will your treasures be safe?
  • They can but crouch under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.
  • You will stumble along as prisoners
    or lie among the dead.
But even then the LORD’s anger will not be satisfied.
His fist is still poised to strike.
    Judgment against Assyria
  • Judgment on Assyria

Ah! the Assyrian! the rod of mine anger! and the staff in their hand is mine indignation.
  • “What sorrow awaits Assyria, the rod of my anger.
I use it as a club to express my anger.
  • I will send him against a hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge; to take the spoil, and to seize the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.
  • I am sending Assyria against a godless nation,
against a people with whom I am angry.
    Assyria will plunder them,
trampling them like dirt beneath its feet.
  • But he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; for it is in his heart to extirpate and cut off nations not a few.
  • But the king of Assyria will not understand that he is my tool;
his mind does not work that way.
His plan is simply to destroy,
to cut down nation after nation.
  • For he saith, Are not my princes all kings?
  • He will say,
‘Each of my princes will soon be a king.
  • Is not Calno as Karkemish? Is not Hamath as Arpad? Is not Samaria as Damascus?
  • We destroyed Calno just as we did Carchemish.
Hamath fell before us as Arpad did.
And we destroyed Samaria just as we did Damascus.
  • As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idols, -- and their graven images exceeded those of Jerusalem and Samaria,
  • Yes, we have finished off many a kingdom
whose gods were greater than those in Jerusalem and Samaria.
  • shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria And her idols, so do to Jerusalem And her images?
  • So we will defeat Jerusalem and her gods,
just as we destroyed Samaria with hers.’”
  • And it shall come to pass, when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount Zion and upon Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stoutness of heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks.
  • After the Lord has used the king of Assyria to accomplish his purposes on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, he will turn against the king of Assyria and punish him — for he is proud and arrogant.
  • For he saith, By the strength of my hand I have done [it], and by my wisdom, for I am intelligent; and I have removed the bounds of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures, and, like a valiant man, I have brought down them that sit [on thrones];
  • He boasts,
“By my own powerful arm I have done this.
With my own shrewd wisdom I planned it.
I have broken down the defenses of nations
    and carried off their treasures.
I have knocked down their kings like a bull.
  • and my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the peoples, and as one gathereth forsaken eggs, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or chirped.
  • I have robbed their nests of riches
and gathered up kingdoms as a farmer gathers eggs.
No one can even flap a wing against me
or utter a peep of protest.”
  • -- Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? shall the saw magnify itself against him that wieldeth it? As if the rod should wield them that lift it up; as if the staff should lift up [him who is] not wood!
  • But can the ax boast greater power than the person who uses it?
Is the saw greater than the person who saws?
Can a rod strike unless a hand moves it?
Can a wooden cane walk by itself?
  • Therefore shall the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness, and under his glory he shall kindle a burning, like the burning of a fire:
  • Therefore, the Lord, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies,
will send a plague among Assyria’s proud troops,
and a flaming fire will consume its glory.
  • and the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame; and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briars in one day,
  • The LORD, the Light of Israel, will be a fire;
the Holy One will be a flame.
He will devour the thorns and briers with fire,
burning up the enemy in a single night.
  • and it shall consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body; and they shall be as when a sick man fainteth.
  • The LORD will consume Assyria’s glory
    like a fire consumes a forest in a fruitful land;
it will waste away like sick people in a plague.
  • And the remainder of the trees of his forest shall be few: yea, a child might write them.
  • Of all that glorious forest, only a few trees will survive —
so few that a child could count them!
    Hope for the LORD’s People
  • A Remnant of Israel Shall Return

And it shall come to pass in that day, [that] the remnant of Israel and such as are escaped of the house of Jacob shall no more again rely upon him that smote them; but they shall rely upon Jehovah, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.
  • In that day the remnant left in Israel,
the survivors in the house of Jacob,
will no longer depend on allies
    who seek to destroy them.
But they will faithfully trust the LORD,
    the Holy One of Israel.
  • The remnant shall return, the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God.
  • A remnant will return;a
yes, the remnant of Jacob will return to the Mighty God.
  • For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, [only] a remnant of them shall return: the consumption determined shall overflow in righteousness.
  • But though the people of Israel are as numerous
as the sand of the seashore,
only a remnant of them will return.
The LORD has rightly decided to destroy his people.
  • For a consumption, and [one] determined, will the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, accomplish in the midst of all the land.
  • Yes, the Lord, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies,
has already decided to destroy the entire land.b
  • Therefore thus saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts: O my people that dwellest in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian; he shall smite thee with a rod, and shall lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt:
  • So this is what the Lord, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, says: “O my people in Zion, do not be afraid of the Assyrians when they oppress you with rod and club as the Egyptians did long ago.
  • for yet a very little while, and the indignation shall be accomplished, and mine anger, in their destruction.
  • In a little while my anger against you will end, and then my anger will rise up to destroy them.”
  • And Jehovah of hosts will stir up a scourge against him, according to the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb; and his rod [shall be] upon the sea, and he will lift it up after the manner of Egypt.
  • The LORD of Heaven’s Armies will lash them with his whip, as he did when Gideon triumphed over the Midianites at the rock of Oreb, or when the LORD’s staff was raised to drown the Egyptian army in the sea.
  • And it shall come to pass in that day, [that] his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck; and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing. ...
  • In that day the LORD will end the bondage of his people.
He will break the yoke of slavery
and lift it from their shoulders.c
  • He is come to Aiath, he hath passed through Migron; at Michmash he layeth up his baggage.
  • Look, the Assyrians are now at Aiath.
    They are passing through Migron
and are storing their equipment at Micmash.
  • They are gone through the pass; they make their lodging at Geba: Ramah trembleth, Gibeah of Saul is fled.
  • They are crossing the pass
    and are camping at Geba.
Fear strikes the town of Ramah.
All the people of Gibeah, the hometown of Saul,
    are running for their lives.
  • Lift up thy voice, daughter of Gallim! Hearken, O Laish! -- Poor Anathoth!
  • Scream in terror,
    you people of Gallim!
Shout out a warning to Laishah.
    Oh, poor Anathoth!
  • Madmenah is fugitive; the inhabitants of Gebim take to flight.
  • There go the people of Madmenah, all fleeing.
The citizens of Gebim are trying to hide.
  • Still a day of halting at Nob; he shaketh his hand [against] the mount of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem. ...
  • The enemy stops at Nob for the rest of that day.
He shakes his fist at beautiful Mount Zion, the mountain of Jerusalem.
  • Behold the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, shall lop the boughs with violence; and the high ones of stature shall be hewn down, and the haughty shall be brought low;
  • But look! The Lord, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies,
will chop down the mighty tree of Assyria with great power!
He will cut down the proud.
That lofty tree will be brought down.
  • and he shall make clearings in the thickets of the forest with iron; and Lebanon shall fall by a mighty one.
  • He will cut down the forest trees with an ax.
Lebanon will fall to the Mighty One.d
