Darby Bible Translation

New Living Translation

  • God's Restoration of Israel

For Jehovah will have mercy on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in rest in their own land; and the stranger shall be united to them, and they shall be joined to the house of Jacob.
  • A Taunt for Babylon’s King

But the LORD will have mercy on the descendants of Jacob. He will choose Israel as his special people once again. He will bring them back to settle once again in their own land. And people from many different nations will come and join them there and unite with the people of Israel.a
  • And the peoples shall take them and bring them to their place; and the house of Israel shall possess them in the land of Jehovah for servants and handmaids; and they shall take them captive whose captives they were, and they shall rule over their oppressors.
  • The nations of the world will help the people of Israel to return, and those who come to live in the LORD’s land will serve them. Those who captured Israel will themselves be captured, and Israel will rule over its enemies.
  • Triumphant Exultation over Babel

And it shall come to pass in the day that Jehovah shall give thee rest from thy sorrow and from thy trouble and from the hard bondage wherein thou wast made to serve,
  • In that wonderful day when the LORD gives his people rest from sorrow and fear, from slavery and chains,
  • that thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the oppressor ceased, -- the exactress of gold ceased!
  • you will taunt the king of Babylon. You will say,
“The mighty man has been destroyed.
    Yes, your insolenceb is ended.
  • Jehovah hath broken the staff of the wicked, the sceptre of the rulers.
  • For the LORD has crushed your wicked power
    and broken your evil rule.
  • He that smote the peoples in wrath with a relentless stroke, he that ruled the nations in anger, is persecuted unsparingly.
  • You struck the people with endless blows of rage
and held the nations in your angry grip
    with unrelenting tyranny.
  • The whole earth is at rest, is quiet: they break forth into singing.
  • But finally the earth is at rest and quiet.
    Now it can sing again!
  • Even the cypresses rejoice at thee, the cedars of Lebanon, [saying,] Since thou art laid down, no feller is come up against us.
  • Even the trees of the forest —
the cypress trees and the cedars of Lebanon —
    sing out this joyous song:
‘Since you have been cut down,
no one will come now to cut us down!’
  • Sheol from beneath is moved for thee to meet [thee] at thy coming, stirring up the dead for thee, all the he-goats of the earth; making to rise from their thrones all the kings of the nations.
  • “In the place of the deadc there is excitement
    over your arrival.
The spirits of world leaders and mighty kings long dead
    stand up to see you.
  • All of them shall answer and say unto thee, Art thou also become powerless as we; art thou become like unto us!
  • With one voice they all cry out,
‘Now you are as weak as we are!
  • thy pomp is brought down to Sheol, the noise of thy lyres: the maggot is spread under thee, And worms cover thee.
  • Your might and power were buried with you.d
The sound of the harp in your palace has ceased.
    Now maggots are your sheet,
    and worms your blanket.’
  • How art thou fallen from heaven, Lucifer, son of the morning! Thou art cut down to the ground, that didst prostrate the nations!
  • “How you are fallen from heaven,
O shining star, son of the morning!
You have been thrown down to the earth,
you who destroyed the nations of the world.
  • And thou that didst say in thy heart, I will ascend into the heavens, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God, and I will sit upon the mount of assembly, in the recesses of the north;
  • For you said to yourself,
‘I will ascend to heaven and set my throne above God’s stars.
I will preside on the mountain of the gods
    far away in the north.e
  • I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High:
  • I will climb to the highest heavens
and be like the Most High.’
  • none the less art thou brought down to Sheol, to the recesses of the pit.
  • Instead, you will be brought down to the place of the dead,
    down to its lowest depths.
  • They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee; they shall consider thee, [saying,] Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that shook kingdoms;
  • Everyone there will stare at you and ask,
‘Can this be the one who shook the earth
and made the kingdoms of the world tremble?
  • [that] made the world as a wilderness, and overthrew the cities thereof; [that] dismissed not his prisoners homewards?
  • Is this the one who destroyed the world
and made it into a wasteland?
Is this the king who demolished the world’s greatest cities
and had no mercy on his prisoners?’
  • -- All the kings of the nations, all of them, lie in glory, every one in his own house;
  • “The kings of the nations lie in stately glory,
    each in his own tomb,
  • but thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch, covered with the slain -- those thrust through with the sword, that go down to the stones of the pit: like a carcase trodden under foot.
  • but you will be thrown out of your grave
    like a worthless branch.
    Like a corpse trampled underfoot,
you will be dumped into a mass grave
    with those killed in battle.
You will descend to the pit.
  • Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial; for thou hast destroyed thy land, hast slain thy people. Of the seed of evildoers no mention shall be made for ever.
  • You will not be given a proper burial,
for you have destroyed your nation
    and slaughtered your people.
The descendants of such an evil person
    will never again receive honor.
  • Prepare ye slaughter for his children, because of the iniquity of their fathers; that they may not rise up and possess the earth, nor fill the face of the world with cities.
  • Kill this man’s children!
Let them die because of their father’s sins!
They must not rise and conquer the earth,
filling the world with their cities.”
  • For I will rise up against them, saith Jehovah of hosts, and cut off from Babylon name and remnant, and scion and descendant, saith Jehovah.
  • This is what the LORD of Heaven’s Armies says:
“I, myself, have risen against Babylon!
I will destroy its children and its children’s children,”
    says the LORD.
  • And I will make it a possession for the bittern, and pools of water; and I will sweep it with the besom of destruction, saith Jehovah of hosts.
  • “I will make Babylon a desolate place of owls,
    filled with swamps and marshes.
I will sweep the land with the broom of destruction.
I, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, have spoken!”
  • God's Purpose against Assyria

Jehovah of hosts hath sworn saying, Assuredly as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, it shall stand:

  • A Message about Assyria

The LORD of Heaven’s Armies has sworn this oath:
“It will all happen as I have planned.
It will be as I have decided.
  • to break the Assyrian in my land; and upon my mountains will I tread him under foot; and his yoke shall depart from off them, and his burden depart from off their shoulders.
  • I will break the Assyrians when they are in Israel;
I will trample them on my mountains.
My people will no longer be their slaves
nor bow down under their heavy loads.
  • This is the counsel which is purposed concerning the whole earth; and this is the hand which is stretched out upon all the nations.
  • I have a plan for the whole earth,
a hand of judgment upon all the nations.
  • For Jehovah of hosts hath purposed, and who shall frustrate [it]? And his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?
  • The LORD of Heaven’s Armies has spoken —
    who can change his plans?
    When his hand is raised,
    who can stop him?”
  • Philistia will Be Destroyed

In the year of the death of king Ahaz was this burden:

  • A Message about Philistia

This message came to me the year King Ahaz died:f
  • Rejoice not thou, Philistia, all of thee, because the rod that smote thee is broken; for out of the serpent's root shall come forth a viper, and his fruit shall be a fiery flying serpent.
  • Do not rejoice, you Philistines,
that the rod that struck you is broken —
that the king who attacked you is dead.
For from that snake a more poisonous snake will be born,
a fiery serpent to destroy you!
  • And the firstborn of the poor shall feed, and the needy shall lie down in safety; but I will kill thy root with famine, and thy remnant shall be slain.
  • I will feed the poor in my pasture;
the needy will lie down in peace.
But as for you, I will wipe you out with famine
and destroy the few who remain.
  • Howl, O gate! cry, O city! thou, Philistia, art wholly dissolved; for there cometh from the north a smoke, and none remaineth apart in his gatherings [of troops].
  • Wail at the gates! Weep in the cities!
    Melt with fear, you Philistines!
A powerful army comes like smoke from the north.
Each soldier rushes forward eager to fight.
  • And what shall be answered to the messengers of the nation? That Jehovah hath founded Zion, and the afflicted of his people find refuge in it.
  • What should we tell the Philistine messengers? Tell them,
    “The LORD has built Jerusalemg;
its walls will give refuge to his oppressed people.”
