Is such the fast that I have chosen, a day for a man to afflict his soul, -- that he should bow down his head as a bulrush, and spread sackcloth and ashes [under him]? Wilt thou call this a fast, and a day acceptable to Jehovah?

You humble yourselves
by going through the motions of penance,

like reeds bending in the wind.
You dress in burlap
and cover yourselves with ashes.
Is this what you call fasting?
Do you really think this will please the LORD? -

Разве такой пост Я избрал,
день, когда человек лишь смиряет себя?
Разве он для того, чтобы клонить свою голову, как камыш,
и лежать в рубище и пепле?
Это ли вы назовете постом,
днем, угодным Господу? -
Не такий піст Я вибрав і день, щоб людина впокорювала свою душу! Коли ти не зігнеш, як кільце, свою шию і не постелиш мішковину та попіл, то не назвете такий піст прийнятним.
