Darby Bible Translation

English Standard Version

  • David's Righteous Branch

    Woe unto the shepherds that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! saith Jehovah.
  • The Righteous Branch

    “Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!” declares the Lord.
  • Therefore thus saith Jehovah the God of Israel concerning the shepherds that feed my people: Ye have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them: behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings, saith Jehovah.
  • Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who care for my people: “You have scattered my flock and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. Behold, I will attend to you for your evil deeds, declares the Lord.
  • And I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all countries whither I have driven them, and will bring them again to their pastures; and they shall be fruitful and shall multiply.
  • Then I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply.
  • And I will raise up shepherds over them, who shall feed them; and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall any be missing, saith Jehovah.
  • I will set shepherds over them who will care for them, and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall any be missing, declares the Lord.
  • Behold, the days come, saith Jehovah, when I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, who shall reign as king, and act wisely, and shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land.
  • “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.
  • In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell in safety; and this is his name whereby he shall be called, Jehovah our Righteousness.
  • In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’
  • Therefore behold, days are coming, saith Jehovah, that they shall no more say, [As] Jehovah liveth, who brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt;
  • “Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when they shall no longer say, ‘As the Lord lives who brought up the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt,’
  • but, [As] Jehovah liveth, who brought up and who led back the seed of the house of Israel out of the north country, and from all countries whither I had driven them. And they shall dwell in their own land.
  • but ‘As the Lord lives who brought up and led the offspring of the house of Israel out of the north country and out of all the countries where hea had driven them.’ Then they shall dwell in their own land.”
  • Lying Prophets

    Concerning the prophets: My heart within me is broken; all my bones shake; I am like a drunken man, and like a man whom wine hath overcome; because of Jehovah, and because of the words of his holiness.
  • Lying Prophets

    Concerning the prophets:
    My heart is broken within me;
    all my bones shake;
    I am like a drunken man,
    like a man overcome by wine,
    because of the Lord
    and because of his holy words.
  • For the land is full of adulterers; for because of execration the land mourneth. The pastures of the wilderness are dried up; for their course is evil, and their force is not right.
  • For the land is full of adulterers;
    because of the curse the land mourns,
    and the pastures of the wilderness are dried up.
    Their course is evil,
    and their might is not right.
  • For both prophet and priest are profane: even in my house have I found their wickedness, saith Jehovah.
  • “Both prophet and priest are ungodly;
    even in my house I have found their evil,
    declares the Lord.
  • Therefore their way shall be unto them as slippery places in the darkness; they shall be driven on, and fall therein: for I will bring evil upon them in the year of their visitation, saith Jehovah.
  • Therefore their way shall be to them
    like slippery paths in the darkness,
    into which they shall be driven and fall,
    for I will bring disaster upon them
    in the year of their punishment,
    declares the Lord.
  • And I have seen folly in the prophets of Samaria: they prophesied by Baal, and caused my people Israel to err.
  • In the prophets of Samaria
    I saw an unsavory thing:
    they prophesied by Baal
    and led my people Israel astray.
  • And in the prophets of Jerusalem have I seen a horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in falsehood, and strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that none doth return from his wickedness. They are all become unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah.
  • But in the prophets of Jerusalem
    I have seen a horrible thing:
    they commit adultery and walk in lies;
    they strengthen the hands of evildoers,
    so that no one turns from his evil;
    all of them have become like Sodom to me,
    and its inhabitants like Gomorrah.”
  • Therefore thus saith Jehovah of hosts concerning the prophets: Behold, I will feed them with wormwood, and make them drink water of gall; for from the prophets of Jerusalem is profaneness gone forth into all the land.
  • Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts concerning the prophets:
    “Behold, I will feed them with bitter food
    and give them poisoned water to drink,
    for from the prophets of Jerusalem
    ungodliness has gone out into all the land.”
  • Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they lead you to vanity; they speak a vision of their own heart, not out of the mouth of Jehovah.
  • Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes. They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord.
  • They say constantly unto them that despise me, Jehovah hath said, Ye shall have peace. And they say unto every one that walketh in the stubbornness of his heart, No evil shall come upon you.
  • They say continually to those who despise the word of the Lord, ‘It shall be well with you’; and to everyone who stubbornly follows his own heart, they say, ‘No disaster shall come upon you.’”
  • For who hath stood in the council of Jehovah, so that he hath perceived and heard his word? who hath hearkened to his word and listened?
  • For who among them has stood in the council of the Lord
    to see and to hear his word,
    or who has paid attention to his word and listened?
  • Behold, a tempest of Jehovah, fury is gone forth, yea, a whirling storm: it shall whirl down upon the head of the wicked.
  • Behold, the storm of the Lord!
    Wrath has gone forth,
    a whirling tempest;
    it will burst upon the head of the wicked.
  • The anger of Jehovah shall not return, until he have executed, and until he have performed the purposes of his heart: at the end of the days ye shall understand it clearly.
  • The anger of the Lord will not turn back
    until he has executed and accomplished
    the intents of his heart.
    In the latter days you will understand it clearly.
  • I did not send the prophets, yet they ran; I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied.
  • “I did not send the prophets,
    yet they ran;
    I did not speak to them,
    yet they prophesied.
  • But if they had stood in my council, and had caused my people to hear my words, then would they have turned them from their evil way and from the wickedness of their doings.
  • But if they had stood in my council,
    then they would have proclaimed my words to my people,
    and they would have turned them from their evil way,
    and from the evil of their deeds.
  • Am I a God at hand, saith Jehovah, and not a God afar off?
  • “Am I a God at hand, declares the Lord, and not a God far away?
  • Can any hide himself in secret places, that I shall not see him? saith Jehovah. Do not I fill the heavens and the earth? saith Jehovah.
  • Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the Lord.
  • I have heard what the prophets say, who prophesy falsehood in my name, saying, I have dreamed, I have dreamed.
  • I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy lies in my name, saying, ‘I have dreamed, I have dreamed!’
  • How long shall [this] be in the heart of the prophets who prophesy falsehood, and who are prophets of the deceit of their own heart?
  • How long shall there be lies in the heart of the prophets who prophesy lies, and who prophesy the deceit of their own heart,
  • who think to cause my people to forget my name by their dreams which they tell every man to his neighbour: as their fathers have forgotten my name for Baal.
  • who think to make my people forget my name by their dreams that they tell one another, even as their fathers forgot my name for Baal?
  • The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell the dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? saith Jehovah.
  • Let the prophet who has a dream tell the dream, but let him who has my word speak my word faithfully. What has straw in common with wheat? declares the Lord.
  • Is not my word like a fire, saith Jehovah; and like a hammer [that] breaketh the rock in pieces?
  • Is not my word like fire, declares the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?
  • Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, saith Jehovah, that steal my words every one from his neighbour.
  • Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, declares the Lord, who steal my words from one another.
  • Behold, I am against the prophets, saith Jehovah, that use their tongues, and say, He hath said.
  • Behold, I am against the prophets, declares the Lord, who use their tongues and declare, ‘declares the Lord.’
  • Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith Jehovah, and that tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies and by their boasting; and I have not sent them, nor commanded them; and they profit not this people at all, saith Jehovah.
  • Behold, I am against those who prophesy lying dreams, declares the Lord, and who tell them and lead my people astray by their lies and their recklessness, when I did not send them or charge them. So they do not profit this people at all, declares the Lord.
  • False Oracles

    And when this people, or a prophet, or a priest, ask thee, saying, What is the burden of Jehovah? thou shalt then say unto them, What burden? I will even cast you off, saith Jehovah.
  • “When one of this people, or a prophet or a priest asks you, ‘What is the burden of the Lord?’ you shall say to them, ‘You are the burden,b and I will cast you off, declares the Lord.’
  • And as for the prophet, and the priest, and the people, that shall say, The burden of Jehovah, I will even punish that man and his house.
  • And as for the prophet, priest, or one of the people who says, ‘The burden of the Lord,’ I will punish that man and his household.
  • Thus shall ye say every one to his neighbour, and every one to his brother: What hath Jehovah answered? and, What hath Jehovah spoken?
  • Thus shall you say, every one to his neighbor and every one to his brother, ‘What has the Lord answered?’ or ‘What has the Lord spoken?’
  • And the burden of Jehovah shall ye mention no more; for every man's own word shall be his burden: for ye have perverted the words of the living God, of Jehovah of hosts, our God.
  • But ‘the burden of the Lord’ you shall mention no more, for the burden is every man’s own word, and you pervert the words of the living God, the Lord of hosts, our God.
  • Thus shalt thou say to the prophet: What hath Jehovah answered thee? and, What hath Jehovah spoken?
  • Thus you shall say to the prophet, ‘What has the Lord answered you?’ or ‘What has the Lord spoken?’
  • But since ye say, The burden of Jehovah, therefore thus saith Jehovah: Because ye say this word, The burden of Jehovah, and I have sent unto you, saying, Ye shall not say, The burden of Jehovah;
  • But if you say, ‘The burden of the Lord,’ thus says the Lord, ‘Because you have said these words, “The burden of the Lord,” when I sent to you, saying, “You shall not say, ‘The burden of the Lord,’”
  • therefore behold, I will utterly forget you, and I will cast you off, far from my face, and the city that I gave to you and to your fathers.
  • therefore, behold, I will surely lift you upc and cast you away from my presence, you and the city that I gave to you and your fathers.
  • And I will bring everlasting reproach upon you, and everlasting shame, that shall not be forgotten.
  • And I will bring upon you everlasting reproach and perpetual shame, which shall not be forgotten.’”
