Darby Bible Translation

New King James Version

  • The Judgment on Moab

    Concerning Moab. Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: Woe unto Nebo! for it is spoiled; Kirjathaim is put to shame, it is taken; Misgab is put to shame and dismayed.
  • Judgment on Moab

    Against Moab.
    Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel:
    “Woe to Nebo!
    For it is plundered,
    Kirjathaim is shamed and taken;
    [a]The high stronghold is shamed and dismayed —
  • Moab's praise is no more; in Heshbon they have devised evil against her: Come, and let us cut her off from [being] a nation. Thou also, O Madmen, shalt be cut down; the sword shall pursue thee.
  • No more praise of Moab.
    In Heshbon they have devised evil against her:
    ‘Come, and let us cut her off as a nation.’
    You also shall be cut down, O Madmen![b]
    The sword shall pursue you;
  • A voice of crying from Horonaim; wasting and great destruction!
  • A voice of crying shall be from Horonaim:
    ‘Plundering and great destruction!’
  • Moab is destroyed; her little ones have caused a cry to be heard.
  • “Moab is destroyed;
    [c]Her little ones have caused a cry to be heard;
  • For by the ascent of Luhith continual weeping shall go up; for in the descent of Horonaim is heard the anguish of the cry of destruction.
  • For in the Ascent of Luhith they ascend with continual weeping;
    For in the descent of Horonaim the enemies have heard a cry of destruction.
  • Flee, save your lives, and be like a shrub in the wilderness.
  • “Flee, save your lives!
    And be like [d]the juniper in the wilderness.
  • For because thou hast confided in thy works and in thy treasures, thou also shalt be taken, and Chemosh shall go forth into captivity, his priests and his princes together.
  • For because you have trusted in your works and your treasures,
    You also shall be taken.
    And Chemosh shall go forth into captivity,
    His priests and his princes together.
  • And the waster shall come upon every city, that not a city shall escape; and the valley shall perish, and the plateau shall be destroyed: as Jehovah hath said.
  • And the plunderer shall come against every city;
    No one shall escape.
    The valley also shall perish,
    And the plain shall be destroyed,
    As the Lord has spoken.
  • Give wings unto Moab, that she may flee and get away; and the cities thereof shall become a desolation, without inhabitant.
  • “Give wings to Moab,
    That she may flee and get away;
    For her cities shall be desolate,
    Without any to dwell in them.
  • Cursed be he that doeth the work of Jehovah negligently, and cursed be he that keepeth back his sword from blood!
  • Cursed is he who does the work of the Lord deceitfully,
    And cursed is he who keeps back his sword from blood.
  • Moab hath been at ease from his youth, and hath settled on his lees; he hath not been emptied from vessel to vessel, neither hath he gone into captivity: therefore his taste hath remained in him, and his scent is not changed.
  • “Moab has been at ease from [e]his youth;
    He has settled on his dregs,
    And has not been emptied from vessel to vessel,
    Nor has he gone into captivity.
    Therefore his taste remained in him,
    And his scent has not changed.
  • Therefore behold, days come, saith Jehovah, that I will send unto him pourers that shall pour him off, and shall empty his vessels, and break in pieces his flagons.
  • “Therefore behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord,
    “That I shall send him [f]wine-workers
    Who will tip him over
    And empty his vessels
    And break the bottles.
  • And Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel, their confidence.
  • Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh,
    As the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel, their confidence.
  • How do ye say, We are mighty, and men of valour for the war?
  • “How can you say, ‘We are mighty
    And strong men for the war’?
  • Moab is laid waste, and his cities are gone up [in smoke], and his chosen young men are gone down to the slaughter, saith the King, whose name is Jehovah of hosts.
  • Moab is plundered and gone up from her cities;
    Her chosen young men have gone down to the slaughter,” says the King,
    Whose name is the Lord of hosts.
  • The calamity of Moab is near to come, and his affliction hasteth fast.
  • “The calamity of Moab is near at hand,
    And his affliction comes quickly.
  • All ye that are about him, bemoan him; and all ye that know his name, say, How is the strong staff broken, the beautiful rod!
  • Bemoan him, all you who are around him;
    And all you who know his name,
    Say, ‘How the strong staff is broken,
    The beautiful rod!’
  • Come down from [thy] glory and sit in the drought, O inhabitress, daughter of Dibon; the spoiler of Moab is come up against thee, thy strongholds hath he destroyed.
  • “O daughter inhabiting Dibon,
    Come down from your glory,
    And sit in thirst;
    For the plunderer of Moab has come against you,
    He has destroyed your strongholds.
  • Stand by the way, and watch, inhabitress of Aroer; ask him that fleeth, and her that escapeth; say, What is done?
  • O inhabitant of Aroer,
    Stand by the way and watch;
    Ask him who flees
    And her who escapes;
    Say, ‘What has happened?’
  • Moab is put to shame; for he is broken down: howl and cry; tell it in Arnon, that Moab is laid waste.
  • Moab is shamed, for he is broken down.
    Wail and cry!
    Tell it in Arnon, that Moab is plundered.
  • And judgment is come upon the country of the plateau; upon Holon, and upon Jahzah, and upon Mephaath;
  • “And judgment has come on the plain country:
    On Holon and Jahzah and Mephaath,
  • and upon Dibon, and upon Nebo, and upon Beth-diblathaim;
  • On Dibon and Nebo and Beth Diblathaim,
  • and upon Kirjathaim, and upon Beth-gamul, and upon Beth-meon;
  • On Kirjathaim and Beth Gamul and Beth Meon,
  • and upon Kerijoth, and upon Bozrah, and upon all the cities of the land of Moab, far and near.
  • On Kerioth and Bozrah,
    On all the cities of the land of Moab,
    Far or near.
  • The horn of Moab is cut off, and his arm is broken, saith Jehovah.
  • The [g]horn of Moab is cut off,
    And his arm is broken,” says the Lord.
  • Make him drunken, for he magnified himself against Jehovah; and Moab shall wallow in his vomit, and he also shall be in derision.
  • “Make him drunk,
    Because he exalted himself against the Lord.
    Moab shall wallow in his vomit,
    And he shall also be in derision.
  • For was not Israel a derision unto thee? Was he found among thieves, that as oft as thou didst speak of him, thou didst shake the head?
  • For was not Israel a derision to you?
    Was he found among thieves?
    For whenever you speak of him,
    You shake your head in scorn.
  • Leave the cities, and dwell in the rocks, ye inhabitants of Moab, and be like the dove, that maketh her nest in the sides of the cave's mouth.
  • You who dwell in Moab,
    Leave the cities and dwell in the rock,
    And be like the dove which makes her nest
    In the sides of the cave’s mouth.
  • We have heard of the arrogance of Moab, -- [he is] very proud; -- his loftiness, and his arrogance, and his pride, and the haughtiness of his heart.
  • “We have heard the pride of Moab
    (He is exceedingly proud),
    Of his loftiness and arrogance and pride,
    And of the haughtiness of his heart.”
  • I know his wrath, saith Jehovah; his pratings are vain: they do not as [they say].
  • “I know his wrath,” says the Lord,
    “But it is not right;
    His [h]lies have made nothing right.
  • Therefore will I howl for Moab, and I will cry out for all Moab: for the men of Kir-heres shall there be moaning.
  • Therefore I will wail for Moab,
    And I will cry out for all Moab;
    [i]I will mourn for the men of Kir Heres.
  • O vine of Sibmah, I will weep for thee with more than the weeping of Jaazer: thy shoots passed over the sea, they reached to the sea of Jaazer. The spoiler is fallen upon thy summer fruits and upon thy vintage.
  • O vine of Sibmah! I will weep for you with the weeping of Jazer.
    Your plants have gone over the sea,
    They reach to the sea of Jazer.
    The plunderer has fallen on your summer fruit and your vintage.
  • And joy and gladness is taken away from the fruitful field and from the land of Moab; and I have caused wine to fail from the winepresses: they shall no more tread with shouting; the shouting shall be no shouting.
  • Joy and gladness are taken
    From the plentiful field
    And from the land of Moab;
    I have caused wine to [j]fail from the winepresses;
    No one will tread with joyous shouting —
    Not joyous shouting!
  • Because of the cry from Heshbon, unto Elaleh, unto Jahaz have they uttered their voice, from Zoar unto Horonaim, [unto] Eglath-shelishijah: for even the waters of Nimrim shall become desolations.
  • “From the cry of Heshbon to Elealeh and to Jahaz
    They have uttered their voice,
    From Zoar to Horonaim,
    Like [k]a three-year-old heifer;
    For the waters of Nimrim also shall be desolate.
  • And I will cause to cease in Moab, saith Jehovah, him that offereth in the high place, and him that burneth incense to his gods.
  • “Moreover,” says the Lord,
    “I will cause to cease in Moab
    The one who offers sacrifices in the [l]high places
    And burns incense to his gods.
  • Therefore my heart shall sound for Moab like pipes, and my heart shall sound like pipes for the men of Kir-heres; because the abundance that he hath gotten is perished.
  • Therefore My heart shall wail like flutes for Moab,
    And like flutes My heart shall wail
    For the men of Kir Heres.
    Therefore the riches they have acquired have perished.
  • For every head is bald, and every beard clipped; upon all the hands are cuttings, and upon the loins sackcloth.
  • “For every head shall be bald, and every beard clipped;
    On all the hands shall be cuts, and on the loins sackcloth —
  • It is wholly lamentation upon all the housetops of Moab, and in the public places thereof; for I have broken Moab, like a vessel wherein is no pleasure, saith Jehovah.
  • A general lamentation
    On all the housetops of Moab,
    And in its streets;
    For I have broken Moab like a vessel in which is no pleasure,” says the Lord.
  • They howl, How is it broken down! how hath Moab turned the back with shame! And Moab shall be a derision and a terror to all that are round about him.
  • “They shall wail:
    ‘How she is broken down!
    How Moab has turned her back with shame!’
    So Moab shall be a derision
    And a dismay to all those about her.”
  • For thus saith Jehovah: Behold, he shall fly as an eagle, and shall spread forth his wings over Moab.
  • For thus says the Lord:
    “Behold, one shall fly like an eagle,
    And spread his wings over Moab.
  • Kerijoth is taken, and the strongholds are seized, and at that day the heart of the mighty men of Moab shall be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.
  • Kerioth is taken,
    And the strongholds are surprised;
    The mighty men’s hearts in Moab on that day shall be
    Like the heart of a woman in birth pangs.
  • And Moab shall be destroyed from being a people, because he hath magnified himself against Jehovah.
  • And Moab shall be destroyed as a people,
    Because he exalted himself against the Lord.
  • Fear, and the pit, and the snare shall be upon thee, O inhabitant of Moab, saith Jehovah.
  • Fear and the pit and the snare shall be upon you,
    O inhabitant of Moab,” says the Lord.
  • He that fleeth from the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that getteth up out of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for I will bring upon her, upon Moab, the year of their visitation, saith Jehovah.
  • “He who flees from the fear shall fall into the pit,
    And he who gets out of the pit shall be caught in the snare.
    For upon Moab, upon it I will bring
    The year of their punishment,” says the Lord.
  • They that fled stood under the shadow of Heshbon powerless; for a fire hath come forth from Heshbon, and a flame from the midst of Sihon, and hath consumed the corner of Moab, and the crown of the head of the sons of tumult.
  • “Those who fled stood under the shadow of Heshbon
    Because of exhaustion.
    But a fire shall come out of Heshbon,
    A flame from the midst of Sihon,
    And shall devour the brow of Moab,
    The crown of the head of the sons of tumult.
  • Woe to thee, Moab! The people of Chemosh is undone; for thy sons are taken away in captivity, and thy daughters are captives.
  • Woe to you, O Moab!
    The people of Chemosh perish;
    For your sons have been taken captive,
    And your daughters captive.
  • But I will turn the captivity of Moab at the end of the days, saith Jehovah. Thus far is the judgement of Moab.
  • “Yet I will bring back the captives of Moab
    In the latter days,” says the Lord.
    Thus far is the judgment of Moab.
