Darby Bible Translation

New King James Version

  • Jeremiah's Afflictions

    א

    I am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.
  • The Prophet’s Anguish and Hope

    I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of His wrath.
  • Me hath he led, and brought into darkness, and not into light.
  • He has led me and made me walk
    In darkness and not in light.
  • Surely against me hath he turned again and again his hand all the day.
  • Surely He has turned His hand against me
    Time and time again throughout the day.
  • ב

    My flesh and my skin hath he wasted away, he hath broken my bones.
  • He has aged my flesh and my skin,
    And broken my bones.
  • He hath built against me, and encompassed [me] with gall and toil.
  • He has besieged me
    And surrounded me with bitterness and [a]woe.
  • He hath made me to dwell in dark places as those that have been long dead.
  • He has set me in dark places
    Like the dead of long ago.
  • ג

    He hath hedged me about that I cannot get out: he hath made my chain heavy.
  • He has hedged me in so that I cannot get out;
    He has made my chain heavy.
  • Even when I cry and shout, he shutteth out my prayer.
  • Even when I cry and shout,
    He shuts out my prayer.
  • He hath inclosed my ways with hewn stone, he hath made my paths crooked.
  • He has blocked my ways with hewn stone;
    He has made my paths crooked.
  • ד

    He is unto me [as] a bear lying in wait, a lion in secret places.
  • He has been to me a bear lying in wait,
    Like a lion in [b]ambush.
  • He hath turned aside my ways, and pulled me in pieces; he hath made me desolate.
  • He has turned aside my ways and torn me in pieces;
    He has made me desolate.
  • He hath bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.
  • He has bent His bow
    And set me up as a target for the arrow.
  • ה

    He hath caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my reins.
  • He has caused the [c]arrows of His quiver
    To pierce my [d]loins.
  • I am become a derision to all my people; their song all the day.
  • I have become the ridicule of all my people —
    Their taunting song all the day.
  • He hath sated me with bitterness, he hath made me drunk with wormwood.
  • He has filled me with bitterness,
    He has made me drink wormwood.
  • ו

    He hath also broken my teeth with gravel stones, he hath covered me with ashes.
  • He has also broken my teeth with gravel,
    And [e]covered me with ashes.
  • And thou hast removed my soul far off from peace: I have forgotten prosperity.
  • You have moved my soul far from peace;
    I have forgotten [f]prosperity.
  • And I said, My strength is perished, and my hope in Jehovah.
  • And I said, “My strength and my hope
    Have perished from the Lord.”
  • Jeremiah's Hope

    ז

    Remember thou mine affliction and my wandering, the wormwood and the gall.
  • Remember my affliction and roaming,
    The wormwood and the [g]gall.
  • My soul hath [them] constantly in remembrance, and is humbled in me.
  • My soul still remembers
    And [h]sinks within me.
  • This I recall to heart, therefore have I hope.
  • This I recall to my mind,
    Therefore I have hope.
  • ח

    It is of Jehovah's loving-kindness we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not;
  • Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed,
    Because His compassions fail not.
  • they are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
  • They are new every morning;
    Great is Your faithfulness.
  • Jehovah is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.
  • “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,
    “Therefore I hope in Him!”
  • ט

    Jehovah is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul [that] seeketh him.
  • The Lord is good to those who wait for Him,
    To the soul who seeks Him.
  • It is good that one should both wait, and that in silence, for the salvation of Jehovah.
  • It is good that one should hope and wait quietly
    For the salvation of the Lord.
  • It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth:
  • It is good for a man to bear
    The yoke in his youth.
  • י

    He sitteth solitary and keepeth silence, because he hath laid it upon him;
  • Let him sit alone and keep silent,
    Because God has laid it on him;
  • he putteth his mouth in the dust, if so be there may be hope;
  • Let him put his mouth in the dust —
    There may yet be hope.
  • he giveth his cheek to him that smiteth him; he is filled full with reproach.
  • Let him give his cheek to the one who strikes him,
    And be full of reproach.
  • כ

    For the Lord will not cast off for ever;
  • For the Lord will not cast off forever.
  • but if he have caused grief, he will have compassion according to the multitude of his loving-kindnesses:
  • Though He causes grief,
    Yet He will show compassion
    According to the multitude of His mercies.
  • for he doth not willingly afflict or grieve the children of men.
  • For He does not afflict [i]willingly,
    Nor grieve the children of men.
  • ל

    To crush under foot all the prisoners of the earth,
  • To crush under one’s feet
    All the prisoners of the earth,
  • to turn aside the right of a man before the face of the Most High,
  • To turn aside the justice due a man
    Before the face of the Most High,
  • to wrong a man in his cause, -- will not the Lord see it?
  • Or subvert a man in his cause —
    The Lord does not approve.
  • God's Justice

    מ

    Who is he that saith, and there cometh to pass, what the Lord hath not commanded?
  • Who is he who speaks and it comes to pass,
    When the Lord has not commanded it?
  • Out of the mouth of the Most High doth not there proceed evil and good?
  • Is it not from the mouth of the Most High
    That woe and well-being proceed?
  • Wherefore doth a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins?
  • Why should a living man [j]complain,
    A man for the punishment of his sins?
  • נ

    Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to Jehovah.
  • Let us search out and examine our ways,
    And turn back to the Lord;
  • Let us lift up our heart with [our] hands unto God in the heavens.
  • Let us lift our hearts and hands
    To God in heaven.
  • We have transgressed and have rebelled: thou hast not pardoned.
  • We have transgressed and rebelled;
    You have not pardoned.
  • ס

    Thou hast covered thyself with anger, and pursued us; thou hast slain, thou hast not spared.
  • You have covered Yourself with anger
    And pursued us;
    You have slain and not pitied.
  • Thou hast covered thyself with a cloud, that prayer should not pass through.
  • You have covered Yourself with a cloud,
    That prayer should not pass through.
  • Thou hast made us the offscouring and refuse in the midst of the peoples.
  • You have made us an offscouring and refuse
    In the midst of the peoples.
  • פ

    All our enemies have opened their mouth against us.
  • All our enemies
    Have opened their mouths against us.
  • Fear and the pit are come upon us, devastation and ruin.
  • Fear and a snare have come upon us,
    Desolation and destruction.
  • Mine eye runneth down with streams of water for the ruin of the daughter of my people.
  • My eyes overflow with rivers of water
    For the destruction of the daughter of my people.
  • ע

    Mine eye poureth down, and ceaseth not, without any intermission,
  • My eyes flow and do not cease,
    Without interruption,
  • till Jehovah look down and behold from the heavens.
  • Till the Lord from heaven
    Looks down and sees.
  • Mine eye affecteth my soul, because of all the daughters of my city.
  • My eyes bring suffering to my soul
    Because of all the daughters of my city.
  • צ

    They that are mine enemies without cause have chased me sore like a bird.
  • My enemies without cause
    Hunted me down like a bird.
  • They have cut off my life in a pit, and cast a stone upon me.
  • They [k]silenced my life in the pit
    And threw [l]stones at me.
  • Waters streamed over my head; I said, I am cut off.
  • The waters flowed over my head;
    I said, “I am cut off!”
  • A Prayer for Deliverance

    ק

    I called upon thy name, Jehovah, out of the lowest pit.
  • I called on Your name, O Lord,
    From the lowest pit.
  • Thou hast heard my voice: hide not thine ear at my sighing, at my cry.
  • You have heard my voice:
    “Do not hide Your ear
    From my sighing, from my cry for help.”
  • Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee; thou saidst, Fear not.
  • You drew near on the day I called on You,
    And said, “Do not fear!”
  • ר

    Lord, thou hast pleaded the cause of my soul, thou hast redeemed my life.
  • O Lord, You have pleaded the case for my soul;
    You have redeemed my life.
  • Jehovah, thou hast seen my wrong: judge thou my cause.
  • O Lord, You have seen [m]how I am wronged;
    Judge my case.
  • Thou hast seen all their vengeance, all their imaginations against me.
  • You have seen all their vengeance,
    All their schemes against me.
  • ש

    Thou hast heard their reproach, O Jehovah, all their imaginations against me;
  • You have heard their reproach, O Lord,
    All their schemes against me,
  • the lips of those that rise up against me and their meditation against me all the day.
  • The lips of my enemies
    And their whispering against me all the day.
  • Behold thou their sitting down and their rising up: I am their song.
  • Look at their sitting down and their rising up;
    I am their taunting song.
  • ת

    Render unto them a recompence, O Jehovah, according to the work of their hands;
  • Repay them, O Lord,
    According to the work of their hands.
  • give them obduracy of heart, thy curse unto them;
  • Give them [n]a veiled heart;
    Your curse be upon them!
  • pursue them in anger, and destroy them from under the heavens of Jehovah.
  • In Your anger,
    Pursue and destroy them
    From under the heavens of the Lord.
