Darby Bible Translation

New American Standard Bible

  • Signs of the Coming Captivity

And the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying,
  • Ezekiel Prepares for Exile

Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
  • Son of man, thou dwellest in the midst of a rebellious house, which have eyes to see, and see not, which have ears to hear, and hear not; for they are a rebellious house.
  • “Son of man, you live in the midst of the rebellious house, who have eyes to see but do not see, ears to hear but do not hear; for they are a rebellious house.
  • And thou, son of man, prepare thee a captive's baggage, and go captive by day in their sight; and thou shalt go captive from thy place to another place in their sight. It may be they will consider, though they are a rebellious house.
  • “Therefore, son of man, prepare for yourself baggage for exile and go into exile by day in their sight; even go into exile from your place to another place in their sight. Perhaps they will understand though they are a rebellious house.
  • And bring forth thy baggage by day in their sight, as a captive's baggage, and thou thyself, go forth at even in their sight as they that go forth into captivity.
  • “Bring your baggage out by day in their sight, as baggage for exile. Then you will go out at evening in their sight, as those going into exile.
  • Dig thou through the wall in their sight, and carry out thereby.
  • “Dig a hole through the wall in their sight and go out through it.
  • In their sight shalt thou bear [it] upon [thy] shoulder, and carry it forth in the dark; thou shalt cover thy face, and thou shalt not see the ground: for I have appointed thee for a sign unto the house of Israel.
  • “Load the baggage on your shoulder in their sight and carry it out in the dark. You shall cover your face so that you cannot see the land, for I have set you as a sign to the house of Israel.”
  • And I did so as I was commanded: I brought forth my baggage by day, as a captive's baggage, and in the even I digged through the wall with my hand; I brought it forth in the dark, [and] bore it upon [my] shoulder, in their sight.
  • I did so, as I had been commanded. By day I brought out my baggage like the baggage of an exile. Then in the evening I dug through the wall with my hands; I went out in the dark and carried the baggage on my shoulder in their sight.
  • And in the morning the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying,
  • In the morning the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
  • Son of man, hath not the house of Israel, the rebellious house, said unto thee, What doest thou?
  • “Son of man, has not the house of Israel, the rebellious house, said to you, ‘What are you doing?’
  • Say unto them, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: This burden [concerneth] the prince in Jerusalem, and all the house of Israel that are among them.
  • “Say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD, “This burden concerns the prince in Jerusalem as well as all the house of Israel who are in it.”’
  • Say, I am your sign: as I have done, so shall it be done unto them: they shall go into exile, into captivity.
  • “Say, ‘I am a sign to you. As I have done, so it will be done to them; they will go into exile, into captivity.’
  • And the prince that is among them shall bear upon [his] shoulder in the dark, and shall go forth; they shall dig through the wall to carry out thereby; he shall cover his face, that he see not the land with [his] eyes.
  • “The prince who is among them will load his baggage on his shoulder in the dark and go out. They will dig a hole through the wall to bring it out. He will cover his face so that he can not see the land with his eyes.
  • And I will spread my net upon him, and he shall be taken in my snare; and I will bring him to Babylon to the land of the Chaldeans; but he shall not see it, and there shall he die.
  • “I will also spread My net over him, and he will be caught in My snare. And I will bring him to Babylon in the land of the Chaldeans; yet he will not see it, though he will die there.
  • And I will scatter toward every wind all that are about him to help him, and all his troops; and I will draw out the sword after them.
  • “I will scatter to every wind all who are around him, his helpers and all his troops; and I will draw out a sword after them.
  • And they shall know that I [am] Jehovah when I shall scatter them among the nations and disperse them through the countries.
  • “So they will know that I am the LORD when I scatter them among the nations and spread them among the countries.
  • But I will leave a few men of them from the sword, from the famine, and from the pestilence; that they may declare all their abominations among the nations whither they shall come; and they shall know that I [am] Jehovah.
  • “But I will spare a few of them from the sword, the famine and the pestilence that they may tell all their abominations among the nations where they go, and may know that I am the LORD.”
  • And the word of Jehovah came to me, saying,
  • Moreover, the word of the LORD came to me saying,
  • Son of man, eat thy bread with quaking, and drink thy water with trembling and with anxiety;
  • “Son of man, eat your bread with trembling and drink your water with quivering and anxiety.
  • and say unto the people of the land, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah concerning the inhabitants of Jerusalem, in the land of Israel: They shall eat their bread with anxiety, and drink their water with astonishment, because her land shall be left desolate of all that is in it, for the violence of all them that dwell therein.
  • “Then say to the people of the land, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD concerning the inhabitants of Jerusalem in the land of Israel, “They will eat their bread with anxiety and drink their water with horror, because their land will be stripped of its fullness on account of the violence of all who live in it.
  • And the cities that are inhabited shall be laid waste, and the land shall be a desolation; and ye shall know that I [am] Jehovah.
  • “The inhabited cities will be laid waste and the land will be a desolation. So you will know that I am the LORD.”’”
  • The Presumptuous Proverb

And the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying,
  • Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
  • Son of man, what is that proverb which ye have in the land of Israel, saying, The days shall be prolonged, and every vision faileth?
  • “Son of man, what is this proverb you people have concerning the land of Israel, saying, ‘The days are long and every vision fails’?
  • Tell them therefore, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: I will make this proverb to cease, and they shall no more use it as a proverb in Israel; but say unto them, The days are at hand, and the accomplishment of every vision.
  • “Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD, “I will make this proverb cease so that they will no longer use it as a proverb in Israel.” But tell them, “The days draw near as well as the fulfillment of every vision.
  • For there shall be no more any vain vision nor flattering divination in the midst of the house of Israel.
  • “For there will no longer be any false vision or flattering divination within the house of Israel.
  • For I [am] Jehovah; I will speak, and the word that I shall speak shall be performed, it shall be no more deferred. For in your days, O rebellious house, will I speak the word and will perform it, saith the Lord Jehovah.
  • “For I the LORD will speak, and whatever word I speak will be performed. It will no longer be delayed, for in your days, O rebellious house, I will speak the word and perform it,” declares the Lord GOD.’”
  • And the word of Jehovah came unto me, saying,
  • Furthermore, the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
  • Son of man, behold, they of the house of Israel say, The vision that he seeth is for many days, and he prophesieth of times that are far off.
  • “Son of man, behold, the house of Israel is saying, ‘The vision that he sees is for many years from now, and he prophesies of times far off.’
  • Therefore say unto them, Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: There shall none of my words be deferred any more, but the word that I have spoken shall be done, saith the Lord Jehovah.
  • “Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD, “None of My words will be delayed any longer. Whatever word I speak will be performed,”’” declares the Lord GOD.
