The Plot against Daniel

It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom a hundred and twenty satraps, who should be in all the kingdom;

1

Дарій задумав настановити над царством сто двайцять сатрапів, щоб були по всьому царстві,

2

and over these, three presidents -- of whom Daniel was one -- to whom these satraps should render account, and that the king should suffer no loss.

А над ними трьох князїв, між котрими був і Даниїл, — щоб сатрапи здавали їм облїч, та й щоб царь не був надто обтяжений.

3

Now this Daniel surpassed the presidents and the satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to appoint him over the whole realm.

Даниїл перевисшував всїх других князїв і сатрапів, бо в ньому був високий дух, і царь мав уже на думцї настановити його над усїм царством.

4

Then the presidents and the satraps sought to find a pretext against Daniel with respect to the kingdom; but they could not find any pretext or fault; inasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him.

Тодї князї й сатрапи почали шукати приключки, щоб Даниїла в управі царством обвинуватити, але не могли знайти нїякої причини анї промаху, бо він був вірний, і не знаходилось на ньому нїякої провини або промаху,

5

Then said these men, We shall not find any pretext against this Daniel, unless we find [it] against him touching the law of his God.

5

І сказали сї люде: Не знайти нам приключки на Даниїла, коли не знайдемо її проти нього в законї Бога його.

6

Then these presidents and satraps came in a body to the king, and said thus unto him: King Darius, live for ever!

6

Тодї прийшли сї князї та сатрапи перед царя і сказали так до нього: Царю Дарію, жий нам на віки!

7

All the presidents of the kingdom, the prefects, and the satraps, the counsellors, and the governors have consulted together to establish a royal statute, and to make a firm decree, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any god or man for thirty days, except of thee, O king, he shall be cast into the den of lions.

Усї князї з царства, намїсники, сатрапи, радники й отамани врадили між собою, щоб вийшла така царська постанова й оповіщено приказ, щоб того, хто в трийцятьох днях засилати ме будь-яку просьбу до котрого бога або до чоловіка, окрім тебе, царю, вкинути в яму поміж левів.

Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing, that it be not changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which may not be revoked.

Так стверди ж, царю, сю постанову й підпиши приказ, щоб він був незмінний, як закон у Мидиї та в Персиї, та й щоб нїхто його не нарушував.

Therefore king Darius signed the writing and the decree.

9

Царь Дарій підписав ту постанову й той приказ.

Daniel in the Lions' Den

And when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and, his windows being open in his upper chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled on his knees three times a day, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime.

Даниїл же, — хоч довідався, що підписаний такий приказ, пійшов до свого дому. А тут він, відчинивши в горницї вікна навпроти Ерусалиму, припадав тричі на день навколїшки й молився свойму Богові й славив його, як се він робив і навперед сього.

But those men came in a body, and found Daniel praying and making supplication before his God.

11

Тодї сї люде підглядїли й знайшли Даниїла, що молився й просив милостї в свого Бога.

12

Then they came near, and spoke before the king concerning the king's decree: Hast thou not signed a decree, that every man that shall ask [anything] of any god or man within thirty days, except of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which may not be revoked.

І прийшли вони до царя та й почали говорити про царський приказ: Чи ж ти не підписав приказ, щоб кожну людину, котра в трийцятьох днях просити ме будь-якого бога або чоловіка, окрім тебе, царю, вкинути в яму між леви? Царь відповів і сказав: Се слово незмінне, як закон у Мидиї й Персиї, його не можна нарушувати.

Then they answered and said before the king, That Daniel, who is of the children of the captivity of Judah, regardeth not thee, O king, nor the decree that thou hast signed, but maketh his petition three times a day.

Тодї відповіли й сказали вони цареві: Даниїл, що з полонених синів Юдейських, не вважає нї на тебе, царю, нї на приказ, тобою підписаний, але тричі на день молиться своїми молитвами.

14

Then the king, when he heard these words, was sore distressed thereby, and set his heart on Daniel to save him; and he laboured till the going down of the sun to deliver him.

Царь, почувши се, засмутився дуже й задумав в серцї свойму спасти Даниїла, й аж до заходу сонця намагався його визволити.

15

Then these men came in a body unto the king, and said unto the king, Know, O king, that the law of the Medes and Persians is, That no decree nor statute which the king establisheth may be changed.

15

Але ті люде прийшли до царя й сказали йому: Знай, царю, що по закону мидийському та перському нїякий закон і приказ, стверджений царем, не може бути змінений.

16

Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast [him] into the den of lions. The king spoke and said unto Daniel, Thy God whom thou servest continually, he will save thee.

Тодї звелїв царь привести Даниїла та й вкинути в яму між левів, та при тім сказав царь Даниїлові: Бог твій, що ти йому вірно служиш, він тебе вибавить.

17

And a stone was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his nobles, that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniel.

17

І принесено плиту та й покладено на отвір ями, й запечатав її царь своїм перстнем та перстнями своїх дуків, щоб нїчого не змінено в приказї про Даниїла.

18

Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting; neither were concubines brought before him; and his sleep fled from him.

18

Потім пійшов царь у свій двір, лїг спати, не вечерявши, ба й не велїв приносити собі страви, та й сон не брався його.

19

Then the king arose with the light at break of day, and went in haste unto the den of lions.

19

А вранцї встав царь, як розвиднювалось, і пійшов сквапно до левиної ями,

20

And when he came near unto the den, he cried with a mournful voice unto Daniel: the king spoke and said unto Daniel, O Daniel, servant of the living God, hath thy God whom thou servest continually been able to save thee from the lions?

20

І, як лиш наближився 'д ямі, кликнув жалісним голосом до Даниїла, й промовив царь до Даниїла: Даниїле, слуго Бога живого! чи зміг Бог твій, що ти йому так вірно служиш, спасти тебе від левів?

21

Then Daniel spoke unto the king, O king, live for ever!

21

Тодї відказав Даниїл цареві: Царю, жий на віки!

22

My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me; forasmuch as before him innocence was found in me; and also before thee, O king, have I done no hurt.

22

Бог мій послав ангела свого й затулив він пащеки левам, і вони не пошкодили менї, бо він знайшов мене безвинним перед собою, та й перед тобою, царю, я нї в чому не проступився.

23

Thereupon was the king exceeding glad, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God.

Тодї зрадїв царь тим незвичайно і приказав витягти Даниїла з ями; і витягли Даниїла з ями й не знайшли жадньої ушкоди на ньому, він бо вірував в Бога свого.

24

The King's Decree

And the king commanded, and they brought those men who had accused Daniel, and cast them into the den of lions, them, their children, and their wives; and the lions had the mastery of them, and broke all their bones in pieces ere they came to the bottom of the den.

24

І приведено на приказ царя тих людей, що обвинуватили Даниїла, й вкинено їх в левину яму, — так їх самих, як і дїтей їх і жінок їх; та ледви вони долетїли до дна ями, а вже леви похапали їх і поторощили їм усї костї.

25

Then king Darius wrote unto all peoples, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied unto you.

25

Після того написав царь Дарій до всїх народів, племен та язиків, що жили по всїй землї його: Мир вам нехай множиться!

26

I make a decree, That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel; for he is the living God, and steadfast for ever, and his kingdom [that] which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end.

26

Оце дається від мене наказ, щоб в кожній областї мого царства боялись і шанували Бога Даниїлового, він бо — Бог живий і вічний, і царство його неминаюче, а властї його нема гряниць.

27

He saveth and delivereth, and he worketh signs and wonders in the heavens and on the earth: who hath saved Daniel from the power of the lions.

27

Він визволяє й спасає, і творить чуда та знамена на небі й на землї; він спас Даниїла від сили левів.

28

And this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius, and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

28

І добре дїялось Даниїлові так за царювання Дарія як і за царя Кира Перського.
