Darby Bible Translation

New King James Version

  • Ephraim's Glory Vanishes

    When Ephraim spoke, there was trembling; he exalted himself in Israel: but he trespassed through Baal, and he died.
  • Relentless Judgment on Israel

    When Ephraim spoke, trembling,
    He exalted himself in Israel;
    But when he offended through Baal worship, he died.
  • And now they sin more and more, and have made them molten images of their silver, idols according to their own understanding, all of it the work of the craftsmen: they say of them, Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves.
  • Now they sin more and more,
    And have made for themselves molded images,
    Idols of their silver, according to their skill;
    All of it is the work of craftsmen.
    They say of them,
    “Let [a]the men who sacrifice [b]kiss the calves!”
  • Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud, and as the early dew that passeth away, as the chaff driven with the whirlwind out of the threshing-floor, and as the smoke out of the lattice.
  • Therefore they shall be like the morning cloud
    And like the early dew that passes away,
    Like chaff blown off from a threshing floor
    And like smoke from a chimney.
  • God's Anger

    Yet I [am] Jehovah thy God from the land of Egypt, and thou hast known no God but me; and there is no saviour besides me.
  • “Yet I am the Lord your God
    Ever since the land of Egypt,
    And you shall know no God but Me;
    For there is no savior besides Me.
  • I knew thee in the wilderness, in the land of drought.
  • I [c]knew you in the wilderness,
    In the land of [d]great drought.
  • According to their pasture, they became full; they became full, and their heart was exalted: therefore have they forgotten me.
  • When they had pasture, they were filled;
    They were filled and their heart was exalted;
    Therefore they forgot Me.
  • And I will be unto them as a lion; as a leopard I will lurk for them by the way;
  • “So I will be to them like a lion;
    Like a leopard by the road I will lurk;
  • I will meet them as a bear bereaved of her [whelps], and will rend the covering of their heart, and there will I devour them like a lioness: the beast of the field shall tear them.
  • I will meet them like a bear deprived of her cubs;
    I will tear open their rib cage,
    And there I will devour them like a lion.
    The [e]wild beast shall tear them.
  • God's Mercy

    It is thy destruction, O Israel, that [thou art] against me, against thy help.
  • “O Israel, [f]you are destroyed,
    But [g]your help is from Me.
  • Where then is thy king, that he may save thee in all thy cities? and thy judges of whom thou saidst, Give me a king and princes? --
  • [h]I will be your King;
    Where is any other,
    That he may save you in all your cities?
    And your judges to whom you said,
    ‘Give me a king and princes’?
  • I gave thee a king in mine anger, and took him away in my wrath.
  • I gave you a king in My anger,
    And took him away in My wrath.
  • The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up; his sin is laid by in store.
  • “The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up;
    His sin is stored up.
  • The pangs of a woman in travail shall come upon him: he is a son not wise; for at the time of the breaking forth of children, he was not there.
  • The sorrows of a woman in childbirth shall come upon him.
    He is an unwise son,
    For he should not stay long where children are born.
  • I will ransom them from the power of Sheol. I will redeem them from death: where, O death, are thy plagues? where, O Sheol, is thy destruction? Repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.
  • “I will ransom them from the [i]power of [j]the grave;
    I will redeem them from death.
    O Death, [k]I will be your plagues!
    O [l]Grave, [m]I will be your destruction!
    Pity is hidden from My eyes.”
  • The Judgment on Samaria

    Though he be fruitful among [his] brethren, an east wind shall come, a wind of Jehovah [that] cometh up from the wilderness, and his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up: he shall spoil the treasure of all pleasant vessels.
  • Though he is fruitful among his brethren,
    An east wind shall come;
    The wind of the Lord shall come up from the wilderness.
    Then his spring shall become dry,
    And his fountain shall be dried up.
    He shall plunder the treasury of every desirable prize.
  • Samaria shall bear her guilt; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword; their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.
  • Samaria [n]is held guilty,
    For she has rebelled against her God.
    They shall fall by the sword,
    Their infants shall be dashed in pieces,
    And their women with child ripped open.
