New Living Translation

  • Restrictions against the Unclean

And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
  • The LORD said to Moses,
  • Speak unto Aaron, and to his sons, that they separate themselves from the holy things of the children of Israel, and that they profane not my holy name in the things that they hallow unto me: I am Jehovah.
  • “Tell Aaron and his sons to be very careful with the sacred gifts that the Israelites set apart for me, so they do not bring shame on my holy name. I am the LORD.
  • Say unto them, Every one of all your seed, throughout your generations, that approacheth the holy things, which the children of Israel hallow unto Jehovah, having his uncleanness upon him, that soul shall be cut off from before me: I am Jehovah.
  • Give them the following instructions.
“In all future generations, if any of your descendants is ceremonially unclean when he approaches the sacred offerings that the people of Israel consecrate to the LORD, he must be cut off from my presence. I am the LORD.
  • Whatsoever man of the seed of Aaron is a leper, or hath a flux, he shall not eat of the holy things, until he is clean. And he that toucheth any one that is unclean by a dead person, or a man whose seed of copulation hath passed from him;
  • “If any of Aaron’s descendants has a skin diseasea or any kind of discharge that makes him ceremonially unclean, he may not eat from the sacred offerings until he has been pronounced clean. He also becomes unclean by touching a corpse, or by having an emission of semen,
  • or a man that toucheth any crawling thing whereby he becometh unclean, or a man by whom he may become unclean, whatever may be his uncleanness,
  • or by touching a small animal that is unclean, or by touching someone who is ceremonially unclean for any reason.
  • Instructions for Cleansing

-- a person that toucheth any such shall be unclean until even, and shall not eat of the holy things; but he shall bathe his flesh with water,
  • The man who is defiled in any of these ways will remain unclean until evening. He may not eat from the sacred offerings until he has bathed himself in water.
  • and when the sun goeth down, he shall be clean, and may afterwards eat of the holy things; for it is his food.
  • When the sun goes down, he will be ceremonially clean again and may eat from the sacred offerings, for this is his food.
  • Of a dead carcase and what is torn shall he not eat, to make himself unclean therewith: I am Jehovah.
  • He may not eat an animal that has died a natural death or has been torn apart by wild animals, for this would defile him. I am the LORD.
  • And they shall keep my charge, lest they bear sin for it, and die by it, if they profane it: I am Jehovah who do hallow them.
  • “The priests must follow my instructions carefully. Otherwise they will be punished for their sin and will die for violating my instructions. I am the LORD who makes them holy.
  • And no stranger shall eat the holy thing; the sojourner with the priest, and the hired servant, shall not eat of the holy thing.
  • “No one outside a priest’s family may eat the sacred offerings. Even guests and hired workers in a priest’s home are not allowed to eat them.
  • But if a priest buy any one for money, he may eat of it, and he that is born in his house: they may eat of his food.
  • However, if the priest buys a slave for himself, the slave may eat from the sacred offerings. And if his slaves have children, they also may share his food.
  • And a priest's daughter who is [married] to a stranger may not eat of the heave-offering of the holy things.
  • If a priest’s daughter marries someone outside the priestly family, she may no longer eat the sacred offerings.
  • But a priest's daughter that becometh a widow, or is divorced, and hath no seed, and returneth unto her father's house, as in her youth, she may eat of her father's food; but no stranger shall eat thereof.
  • But if she becomes a widow or is divorced and has no children to support her, and she returns to live in her father’s home as in her youth, she may eat her father’s food again. Otherwise, no one outside a priest’s family may eat the sacred offerings.
  • And if a man eat of a holy thing through inadvertence, then he shall put the fifth part thereof unto it, and shall give it unto the priest with the holy thing.
  • “Any such person who eats the sacred offerings without realizing it must pay the priest for the amount eaten, plus an additional 20 percent.
  • And they shall not profane the holy things of the children of Israel which they offer unto Jehovah,
  • The priests must not let the Israelites defile the sacred offerings brought to the LORD
  • and cause them to bear the iniquity of trespass when they eat their holy things; for I am Jehovah who do hallow them.
  • by allowing unauthorized people to eat them. This would bring guilt upon them and require them to pay compensation. I am the LORD who makes them holy.”
  • Worthy Offerings

And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

  • Worthy and Unworthy Offerings

And the LORD said to Moses,
  • Speak unto Aaron, and to his sons, and unto all the children of Israel, and say unto them, Whatever man of the house of Israel, or of the sojourners in Israel, that presenteth his offering for any of his vows, and for any of his voluntary offerings, which they present to Jehovah as a burnt-offering,
  • “Give Aaron and his sons and all the Israelites these instructions, which apply both to native Israelites and to the foreigners living among you.
“If you present a gift as a burnt offering to the LORD, whether it is to fulfill a vow or is a voluntary offering,
  • it shall be for your acceptance, without blemish, a male of the oxen, of the sheep, and of the goats.
  • youb will be accepted only if your offering is a male animal with no defects. It may be a bull, a ram, or a male goat.
  • Nothing that hath a defect shall ye present; for it shall not be acceptable for you.
  • Do not present an animal with defects, because the LORD will not accept it on your behalf.
  • And if any present a sacrifice of peace-offering to Jehovah to accomplish a vow, or a voluntary offering of oxen or small cattle, it shall be without blemish to be accepted: there shall be no defect therein.
  • “If you present a peace offering to the LORD from the herd or the flock, whether it is to fulfill a vow or is a voluntary offering, you must offer a perfect animal. It may have no defect of any kind.
  • Blind, or broken, or maimed, or ulcerous, or with itch, or scabbed -- ye shall not present these to Jehovah, nor make an offering by fire of them on the altar to Jehovah.
  • You must not offer an animal that is blind, crippled, or injured, or that has a wart, a skin sore, or scabs. Such animals must never be offered on the altar as special gifts to the LORD.
  • A bullock and a sheep that hath a member too long or too short, that mayest thou offer as a voluntary offering; but as a vow it shall not be accepted.
  • If a bullc or lamb has a leg that is too long or too short, it may be offered as a voluntary offering, but it may not be offered to fulfill a vow.
  • That which is bruised, or crushed, or broken, or cut shall ye not present to Jehovah; neither in your land shall ye do [the like].
  • If an animal has damaged testicles or is castrated, you may not offer it to the LORD. You must never do this in your own land,
  • Nor from the hand of the stranger shall ye present the bread of your God, of any of these; for their corruption is in them: a defect is in them; they shall not be accepted for you.
  • and you must not accept such an animal from foreigners and then offer it as a sacrifice to your God. Such animals will not be accepted on your behalf, for they are mutilated or defective.”
  • And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
  • And the LORD said to Moses,
  • An ox, or a sheep, or a goat, when it is brought forth, shall be seven days under its dam; and from the eighth day and thenceforth it shall be accepted for an offering by fire to Jehovah.
  • “When a calf or lamb or goat is born, it must be left with its mother for seven days. From the eighth day on, it will be acceptable as a special gift to the LORD.
  • A cow, or sheep -- it and its young shall ye not slaughter in one day.
  • But you must not slaughter a mother animal and her offspring on the same day, whether from the herd or the flock.
  • And when ye sacrifice a sacrifice of thanksgiving to Jehovah, ye shall sacrifice it for your acceptance.
  • When you bring a thanksgiving offering to the LORD, sacrifice it properly so you will be accepted.
  • On that day shall it be eaten: ye shall leave none of it until morning: I am Jehovah.
  • Eat the entire sacrificial animal on the day it is presented. Do not leave any of it until the next morning. I am the LORD.
  • And ye shall observe my commandments and do them: I am Jehovah.
  • “You must faithfully keep all my commands by putting them into practice, for I am the LORD.
  • And ye shall not profane my holy name; but I will be hallowed among the children of Israel: I am Jehovah who do hallow you,
  • Do not bring shame on my holy name, for I will display my holiness among the people of Israel. I am the LORD who makes you holy.
  • who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am Jehovah.
  • It was I who rescued you from the land of Egypt, that I might be your God. I am the LORD.”
