Darby Bible Translation

New Living Translation

  • The Oil for the Lamps

And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
  • Pure Oil and Holy Bread

    The LORD said to Moses,
  • Command the children of Israel that they bring unto thee pure beaten olive oil for the light, to light the lamp continually.
  • “Command the people of Israel to bring you pure oil of pressed olives for the light, to keep the lamps burning continually.
  • Outside the veil of the testimony, in the tent of meeting, shall Aaron dress it from evening to morning before Jehovah continually: [it is] an everlasting statute throughout your generations.
  • This is the lampstand that stands in the Tabernacle, in front of the inner curtain that shields the Ark of the Covenant.a Aaron must keep the lamps burning in the LORD’s presence all night. This is a permanent law for you, and it must be observed from generation to generation.
  • Upon the pure candlestick shall he arrange the lamps before Jehovah continually.
  • Aaron and the priests must tend the lamps on the pure gold lampstand continually in the LORD’s presence.
  • The Showbread

And thou shalt take fine wheaten flour, and bake twelve cakes thereof; each cake shall be of two tenths.
  • “You must bake twelve flat loaves of bread from choice flour, using four quartsb of flour for each loaf.
  • And thou shalt set them in two rows, six in a row, upon the pure table before Jehovah.
  • Place the bread before the LORD on the pure gold table, and arrange the loaves in two stacks, with six loaves in each stack.
  • And thou shalt put pure frankincense upon each row; and it shall be a bread of remembrance, an offering by fire to Jehovah.
  • Put some pure frankincense near each stack to serve as a representative offering, a special gift presented to the LORD.
  • Every sabbath day he shall arrange it before Jehovah continually, on the part of the children of Israel: [it is] an everlasting covenant.
  • Every Sabbath day this bread must be laid out before the LORD as a gift from the Israelites; it is an ongoing expression of the eternal covenant.
  • And it shall be Aaron's and his sons'; and they shall eat it in a holy place; for it is most holy unto him of Jehovah's offerings by fire: [it is] an everlasting statute.
  • The loaves of bread will belong to Aaron and his descendants, who must eat them in a sacred place, for they are most holy. It is the permanent right of the priests to claim this portion of the special gifts presented to the LORD.”
  • Shelomith's Son Blasphemes

    And the son of an Israelitish woman -- but withal the son of an Egyptian, -- went out among the children of Israel; and this son of the Israelitess and a man of Israel strove together in the camp;

  • An Example of Just Punishment

One day a man who had an Israelite mother and an Egyptian father came out of his tent and got into a fight with one of the Israelite men.
  • and the Israelitish woman's son blasphemed the Name, and cursed; and they brought him to Moses. And his mother's name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan.
  • During the fight, this son of an Israelite woman blasphemed the Name of the LORDc with a curse. So the man was brought to Moses for judgment. His mother was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri of the tribe of Dan.
  • And they confined him, that they might decide at the mouth of Jehovah.
  • They kept the man in custody until the LORD’s will in the matter should become clear to them.
  • And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
  • Then the LORD said to Moses,
  • Lead the reviler outside the camp; and all that heard [him] shall lay their hands upon his head, and the whole assembly shall stone him.
  • “Take the blasphemer outside the camp, and tell all those who heard the curse to lay their hands on his head. Then let the entire community stone him to death.
  • And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, Every one when he revileth his God shall bear his sin.
  • Say to the people of Israel: Those who curse their God will be punished for their sin.
  • And he that blasphemeth the name of Jehovah shall certainly be put to death; all the assembly shall certainly stone him; as well the stranger as he that is home-born, when he blasphemeth the Name, shall be put to death.
  • Anyone who blasphemes the Name of the LORD must be stoned to death by the whole community of Israel. Any native-born Israelite or foreigner among you who blasphemes the Name of the LORD must be put to death.
  • An Eye for an Eye

And if any one smiteth any man mortally, he shall certainly be put to death.
  • “Anyone who takes another person’s life must be put to death.
  • And he that smiteth a beast mortally shall make it good, life for life.
  • “Anyone who kills another person’s animal must pay for it in full — a live animal for the animal that was killed.
  • And if a man cause a blemish in his neighbour, as he hath done, so shall it be done to him;
  • “Anyone who injures another person must be dealt with according to the injury inflicted —
  • breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth: as he hath caused a blemish in a man, so shall it be done to him.
  • a fracture for a fracture, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. Whatever anyone does to injure another person must be paid back in kind.
  • He that smiteth a beast [mortally] shall make it good; and he that smiteth a man [mortally] shall be put to death.
  • “Whoever kills an animal must pay for it in full, but whoever kills another person must be put to death.
  • Ye shall have one law: as the stranger, so the home-born; for I am Jehovah your God.
  • “This same standard applies both to native-born Israelites and to the foreigners living among you. I am the LORD your God.”
  • And Moses spoke to the children of Israel; and they led the reviler outside the camp and stoned him with stones. And the children of Israel did as Jehovah had commanded Moses.
  • After Moses gave all these instructions to the Israelites, they took the blasphemer outside the camp and stoned him to death. The Israelites did just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
