Jonah's Anger at the Lord's Compassion

And it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry.

І було це для Йони на доса́ду, досаду велику, і він запали́вся.

And he prayed unto Jehovah, and said, Ah, Jehovah, was not this my saying when I was yet in my country? Therefore I was minded to flee at first unto Tarshish; for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great loving-kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.

І молився він до Господа та й казав: „О Господи, чи ж не це моє слово, поки я ще був на своїй землі? Тому́ я перед тим утік до Таршішу, бо я знав, що Ти Бог милости́вий та милосердий, довготерпели́вий та многомилости́вий, і Ти жалку́єш за зло.

And now, Jehovah, take, I beseech thee, my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.

А тепер, Господи, візьми мою душу від мене, бо краще мені смерть від мого́ життя!“

And Jehovah said, Doest thou well to be angry?

А Господь відказав: „Чи слушно ти запали́вся?“

And Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shade, till he might see what would become of the city.

І вийшов Йона з міста, і сів від сходу міста, і поставив собі там куреня́, і сів під ним у тіні, аж поки побачить, що́ буде в місті.

And Jehovah Elohim prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head, to deliver him from his trouble. And Jonah was exceeding glad because of the gourd.

І ви́ростив Бог рици́нового куща, і він вигнався понад Йону, щоб бути тінню над його головою, щоб урятувати його від його доса́ди. І втішився Йона від цього рици́нового куща́ великою радістю.

But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd, that it withered.

А при сході зірни́ці другого дня призна́чив Бог червяка́, і він підточив рици́нового куща́, і той усох.

And it came to pass, when the sun arose, that God prepared a sultry east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, so that he fainted; and he requested for himself that he might die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

І сталося, як сонце зійшло, то призна́чив Бог схі́днього гарячого вітра, — і вдарило сонце на Йо́нину го́лову, — і він зомлів. І він жадав, щоб йому померти, і казав: „Краще мені смерть від мого́ життя!“

And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, unto death.

І промовив Бог до Йони: „Чи слушно запали́вся ти за рици́новий кущ?“ А той відказав: „Ду́же розлю́тився я, — аж на смерть!“

And Jehovah said, Thou hast pity on the gourd, for which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:

І сказав Госпо́дь: „Ти змилувався над рици́новим куще́м, над яким не трудився, і не пле́кав його, який виріс за одну ніч, і за одну ніч згинув.

and I, should not I have pity on Nineveh, the great city, wherein are more than a hundred and twenty thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?

А Я не змилувався б над Ніневі́єю, — цим великим містом, що в ньому більше дванадцяти́ десятисячок люда, які не вміють розрізняти прави́ці своєї від свое́ї ліви́ці, та числе́нна худоба?“
