Darby Bible Translation

English Standard Version

  • Israel's Great Misery

    Woe is me! for I am as when they have gathered the summer-fruits, as the grape-gleanings of the vintage. There is no cluster to eat; there is no early fruit [which] my soul desired.
  • Wait for the God of Salvation

    Woe is me! For I have become
    as when the summer fruit has been gathered,
    as when the grapes have been gleaned:
    there is no cluster to eat,
    no first-ripe fig that my soul desires.
  • The godly [man] hath perished out of the land, and there is none upright among men: they all lie in wait for blood, they hunt every man his brother with a net.
  • The godly has perished from the earth,
    and there is no one upright among mankind;
    they all lie in wait for blood,
    and each hunts the other with a net.
  • Both hands are for evil, to do it well. The prince asketh, and the judge [is there] for a reward; and the great [man] uttereth his soul's greed: and [together] they combine it.
  • Their hands are on what is evil, to do it well;
    the prince and the judge ask for a bribe,
    and the great man utters the evil desire of his soul;
    thus they weave it together.
  • The best of them is as a briar; the most upright, [worse] than a thorn-fence. The day of thy watchmen, thy visitation is come; now shall be their perplexity.
  • The best of them is like a brier,
    the most upright of them a thorn hedge.
    The day of your watchmen, of your punishment, has come;
    now their confusion is at hand.
  • Believe ye not in a companion, put not confidence in a familiar friend: keep the doors of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy bosom.
  • Put no trust in a neighbor;
    have no confidence in a friend;
    guard the doors of your mouth
    from her who lies in your arms;a
  • For the son dishonoureth the father, the daughter riseth up against her mother, the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law: a man's enemies are the men of his own household.
  • for the son treats the father with contempt,
    the daughter rises up against her mother,
    the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
    a man’s enemies are the men of his own house.
  • Israel Looks to the Lord

    But as for me, I will look unto Jehovah; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me.
  • But as for me, I will look to the Lord;
    I will wait for the God of my salvation;
    my God will hear me.
  • Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: though I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, Jehovah shall be a light unto me.
  • Rejoice not over me, O my enemy;
    when I fall, I shall rise;
    when I sit in darkness,
    the Lord will be a light to me.
  • I will bear the indignation of Jehovah -- for I have sinned against him -- until he plead my cause, and execute judgment for me: he will bring me forth to the light; I shall behold his righteousness.
  • I will bear the indignation of the Lord
    because I have sinned against him,
    until he pleads my cause
    and executes judgment for me.
    He will bring me out to the light;
    I shall look upon his vindication.
  • And mine enemy shall see [it], and shame shall cover her which said unto me, Where is Jehovah thy God? Mine eyes shall behold her; now shall she be trodden down, as the mire of the streets.
  • Then my enemy will see,
    and shame will cover her who said to me,
    “Where is the Lord your God?”
    My eyes will look upon her;
    now she will be trampled down
    like the mire of the streets.
  • In the day when thy walls shall be built, on that day shall the established limit recede.
  • A day for the building of your walls!
    In that day the boundary shall be far extended.
  • In that day they shall come to thee from Assyria and the cities of Egypt, and from Egypt to the river, and from sea to sea, and from mountain to mountain.
  • In that day theyb will come to you,
    from Assyria and the cities of Egypt,
    and from Egypt to the River,c
    from sea to sea and from mountain to mountain.
  • But the land shall be desolate because of them that dwell therein, for the fruit of their doings.
  • But the earth will be desolate
    because of its inhabitants,
    for the fruit of their deeds.
  • God's Compassion on Israel

    Feed thy people with thy rod, the flock of thine inheritance, dwelling alone in the forest, in the midst of Carmel: let them feed in Bashan and Gilead, as in the days of old.
  • Shepherd your people with your staff,
    the flock of your inheritance,
    who dwell alone in a forest
    in the midst of a garden land;d
    let them graze in Bashan and Gilead
    as in the days of old.
  • as in the days of thy coming forth out of the land of Egypt, will I shew them marvellous things.
  • As in the days when you came out of the land of Egypt,
    I will show theme marvelous things.
  • -- The nations shall see, and be ashamed for all their might: they shall lay [their] hand upon [their] mouth, their ears shall be deaf.
  • The nations shall see and be ashamed of all their might;
    they shall lay their hands on their mouths;
    their ears shall be deaf;
  • They shall lick dust like the serpent; like crawling things of the earth, they shall come trembling forth from their close places. They shall turn with fear to Jehovah our God, and shall be afraid because of thee.
  • they shall lick the dust like a serpent,
    like the crawling things of the earth;
    they shall come trembling out of their strongholds;
    they shall turn in dread to the Lord our God,
    and they shall be in fear of you.
  • Who is a God like unto thee, that forgiveth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? He retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in loving-kindness.
  • God’s Steadfast Love and Compassion

    Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity
    and passing over transgression
    for the remnant of his inheritance?
    He does not retain his anger forever,
    because he delights in steadfast love.
  • He will yet again have compassion on us, he will tread under foot our iniquities: and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.
  • He will again have compassion on us;
    he will tread our iniquities underfoot.
    You will cast all ourf sins
    into the depths of the sea.
  • Thou wilt perform truth to Jacob, loving-kindness to Abraham, which thou hast sworn unto our fathers, from the days of old.
  • You will show faithfulness to Jacob
    and steadfast love to Abraham,
    as you have sworn to our fathers
    from the days of old.
