English Standard Version

  • The Burden of Nineveh

    The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
  • An oracle concerning Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum of Elkosh.
  • A jealous and avenging God is Jehovah: an avenger is Jehovah, and full of fury: Jehovah taketh vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth [wrath] for his enemies.
  • God’s Wrath Against Nineveh

    The Lord is a jealous and avenging God;
    the Lord is avenging and wrathful;
    the Lord takes vengeance on his adversaries
    and keeps wrath for his enemies.
  • Jehovah is slow to anger, and great in power, and doth not at all clear [the guilty]: Jehovah, -- his way is in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
  • The Lord is slow to anger and great in power,
    and the Lord will by no means clear the guilty.
    His way is in whirlwind and storm,
    and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
  • He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers: Bashan languisheth, and Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon languisheth.
  • He rebukes the sea and makes it dry;
    he dries up all the rivers;
    Bashan and Carmel wither;
    the bloom of Lebanon withers.
  • The mountains quake before him, and the hills melt, and the earth is upheaved at his presence, and the world, and all that dwell therein.
  • The mountains quake before him;
    the hills melt;
    the earth heaves before him,
    the world and all who dwell in it.
  • Who shall stand before his indignation? and who shall abide in the fierceness of his anger? His fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken asunder by him.
  • Who can stand before his indignation?
    Who can endure the heat of his anger?
    His wrath is poured out like fire,
    and the rocks are broken into pieces by him.
  • Jehovah is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.
  • The Lord is good,
    a stronghold in the day of trouble;
    he knows those who take refuge in him.
  • But with an overrunning flood he will make a full end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue his enemies.
  • But with an overflowing flood
    he will make a complete end of the adversaries,a
    and will pursue his enemies into darkness.
  • What do ye imagine against Jehovah? He will make a full end: trouble shall not rise up the second time.
  • What do you plot against the Lord?
    He will make a complete end;
    trouble will not rise up a second time.
  • Though they be tangled together [as] thorns, and be as drenched from their drink, they shall be devoured as dry stubble, completely.
  • For they are like entangled thorns,
    like drunkards as they drink;
    they are consumed like stubble fully dried.
  • Out of thee is gone forth one that imagineth evil against Jehovah, a wicked counsellor.
  • From you came one
    who plotted evil against the Lord,
    a worthless counselor.
  • Thus saith Jehovah: Though they be complete in number, and many as they be, even so shall they be cut down, and he shall pass away; and though I have afflicted thee, I will afflict thee no more.
  • Thus says the Lord,
    “Though they are at full strength and many,
    they will be cut down and pass away.
    Though I have afflicted you,
    I will afflict you no more.
  • And now will I break his yoke from off thee, and will burst thy bonds asunder.
  • And now I will break his yoke from off you
    and will burst your bonds apart.”
  • And Jehovah hath given commandment concerning thee, that no more of thy name be sown: out of the house of thy god will I cut off the graven image, and the molten image: I will prepare thy grave; for thou art vile.
  • The Lord has given commandment about you:
    “No more shall your name be perpetuated;
    from the house of your gods I will cut off
    the carved image and the metal image.
    I will make your grave, for you are vile.”
  • Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth glad tidings, that publisheth peace! Celebrate thy feasts, Judah, perform thy vows: for the wicked one shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off.
  • b Behold, upon the mountains, the feet of him
    who brings good news,
    who publishes peace!
    Keep your feasts, O Judah;
    fulfill your vows,
    for never again shall the worthless pass through you;
    he is utterly cut off.
