“Take a census of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, by their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names, every male, head by head
from twenty years and upward, all that go forth to military service in Israel: ye shall number them according to their hosts, thou and Aaron.

And with you there shall be a man for every tribe, a man who is the head of his father's house.
“With you, moreover, there shall be a man of each tribe, each one head of his father’s household.
The Princes of the Tribes
And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you: for Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur;
And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you: for Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur;
“These then are the names of the men who shall stand with you: of Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur;
for the children of Joseph: for Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; for Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur;
of the sons of Joseph: of Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; of Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur;
These were those summoned of the assembly, princes of the tribes of their fathers, the heads of the thousands of Israel.
“These are they who were called of the congregation, the leaders of their fathers’ tribes; they were the heads of divisions of Israel.”

Only thou shalt not number the tribe of Levi, neither take the sum of them among the children of Israel.

But thou, appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of testimony, and over all the vessels thereof, and over all things that belong to it: they shall bear the tabernacle, and all its vessels; and they shall serve it, and round about the tabernacle shall they encamp;
“But you shall appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all its furnishings and over all that belongs to it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they shall take care of it; they shall also camp around the tabernacle.
and when the tabernacle setteth forward, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle encampeth, the Levites shall set it up; and the stranger that cometh near shall be put to death.
“So when the tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle encamps, the Levites shall set it up. But the layman who comes near shall be put to death.
And the children of Israel shall encamp every man in his camp, and every man by his own standard, according to their hosts;
“The sons of Israel shall camp, each man by his own camp, and each man by his own standard, according to their armies.
but the Levites shall encamp round about the tabernacle of testimony, that there come not wrath upon the assembly of the children of Israel; and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of testimony.
“But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there will be no wrath on the congregation of the sons of Israel. So the Levites shall keep charge of the tabernacle of the testimony.”
