New Living Translation

  • The Two Silver Trumpets

And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,
  • The Silver Trumpets

Now the LORD said to Moses,
  • Make thee two trumpets of silver; of beaten work shalt thou make them; and they shall serve for the calling together of the assembly, and for the journeying of the camps.
  • “Make two trumpets of hammered silver for calling the community to assemble and for signaling the breaking of camp.
  • And when they shall blow with them, the whole assembly shall gather to thee at the entrance of the tent of meeting.
  • When both trumpets are blown, everyone must gather before you at the entrance of the Tabernacle.a
  • And if they blow with one, then the princes, the heads of the thousands of Israel, shall gather unto thee.
  • But if only one trumpet is blown, then only the leaders — the heads of the clans of Israel — must present themselves to you.
  • And when ye blow an alarm, the camps that lie eastward shall set forward.
  • “When you sound the signal to move on, the tribes camped on the east side of the Tabernacle must break camp and move forward.
  • And when ye blow an alarm the second time, the camps that lie southward shall set forward; they shall blow an alarm on their setting forward.
  • When you sound the signal a second time, the tribes camped on the south will follow. You must sound short blasts as the signal for moving on.
  • And when the congregation is to be gathered together, ye shall blow, but ye shall not blow an alarm:
  • But when you call the people to an assembly, blow the trumpets with a different signal.
  • the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow with the trumpets; and they shall be to you for an everlasting statute throughout your generations.
  • Only the priests, Aaron’s descendants, are allowed to blow the trumpets. This is a permanent law for you, to be observed from generation to generation.
  • And if ye go to war in your land against the enemy that oppresseth you, then ye shall blow an alarm with the trumpets; and ye shall be remembered before Jehovah your God, and ye shall be saved from your enemies.
  • “When you arrive in your own land and go to war against your enemies who attack you, sound the alarm with the trumpets. Then the LORD your God will remember you and rescue you from your enemies.
  • And in the day of your gladness, and in your set feasts, and in your new moons, ye shall blow with the trumpets over your burnt-offerings and over your sacrifices of peace-offering; and they shall be to you for a memorial before your God: I am Jehovah your God.
  • Blow the trumpets in times of gladness, too, sounding them at your annual festivals and at the beginning of each month. And blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and peace offerings. The trumpets will remind your God of his covenant with you. I am the LORD your God.”

  • One day Moses said to his brother-in-law, Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite, “We are on our way to the place the LORD promised us, for he said, ‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us and we will treat you well, for the LORD has promised wonderful blessings for Israel!”
  • And he said to him, I will not go; but to mine own land, and to my kindred will I go.
  • But Hobab replied, “No, I will not go. I must return to my own land and family.”
  • And he said, Leave me not, I pray thee, because thou knowest where we are to encamp in the wilderness, and thou wilt be to us for eyes.
  • “Please don’t leave us,” Moses pleaded. “You know the places in the wilderness where we should camp. Come, be our guide.
